The islands of the Caribbean were originally inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians. In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the Bahamas, and assuming that he reached India, he named the locals Indians.

With an area size of 2,753,000 sq. km (1,063,000 sq mi), the Caribbean Sea is about five times the size of France.

The following island nations achieved independence from the UK: Jamaica (1962), Trinidad and Tobago (1962), Barbados (1966), Bahamas (1973), Grenada (1974), Dominica (1978), St. Lucia (1979), St. Vincent (1979), Antigua and Barbuda (1981), St. Kitts and Nevis (1983).

In 1902, Cuba gained independence from Spain. In 1804, Haiti gained independence from France, and made history by being the first country to abolish slavery in the Western Hemisphere on the same day.

After the Dominican War of Independence against the Spanish empire, the Dominican Republic became a sovereign nation in 1844.

Cuba (105806 sq km) is the largest island nation in the Caribbean followed by Dominican Republic (48671 sq km), Haiti (27750 sq km) and Jamaica (11188 sq km).

Anguilla and Montserrat are the British Overseas territories in the Caribbean. Aruba and Curacao are constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Guadeloupe is governed by France.
