Mandalay is the economic focal point of Upper Burma. Over the past few decades, there has been a massive influx of Chinese people, and whilst this hasn't pleased the Burmese traditionalists it has certainly improved the economy. Naypyitaw has been the nation's capital since 2005, Yangon (Rangoon) was the former capital and is the largest city, and Myawaddy is a town in south-eastern Burma close to the Thai border.

Whilst the reigning monarch usually lives at Chitralada Palace, the Grand Palace is still used for official events and ceremonies. The palace complex is around 220,000 square metres in size.
