Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The second-highest mountain in the world is in this image. What is its two-character name?

Answer: K2

Rising to a height of 8,611 metres above sea level, K2 is second only to Mount Everest, which caps off more than two hundred metres higher. Everest also sits in the Himalayan Plateau while K2 is much further southeast, acting as the crown jewel of the Karakoram Range that straddles the borders between India, Pakistan, and China. Also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, it's had a pretty significant history of being outright deadly for climbers.

Despite advances in high-intensity climbing, one in five people who've attempted to scale it have died.
2. Kolsai Lakes National Park, seen here, is found outside the city of Almaty in which landlocked nation?

Answer: Kazakhstan

Almaty, one of the largest cities in the nation of Kazakhstan, is only a short drive away from expansive and majestic terrain like that seen in Kolsai Lakes National Park, found far in the southeast of the nation along the border with Kyrgyzstan to the south. A UNESCO-protected biosphere, the large lakes here weave through mountains that form parts of the Trans-Ili Alatau, the westernmost reach of the Tian Shan Mountain Range and a large component of the historic Silk Road.

Kazakhstan is otherwise a massive, landlocked country with low population density. A large segment of the nation sees unspoiled wilderness like this though there are also great expanses of plateaus, flat steppes, and deserts.
3. The geographic center of the contiguous United States is found in which state?

Answer: Kansas

If you were to put a mark right in the middle of the U.S., you would land in Lebanon, Kansas, just a short drive south of the border with Nebraska, right in the heart of the agricultural region that takes up the plains. Kansas is notably flat, with a hillier region towards the east where the State borders Missouri.

If you took into consideration both Hawaii and Alaska, the new geographical center of the U.S. would be much further north but no less remote; it'd be north of Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

The median center of population for the U.S., where half the country lives to the north or south and half of the country lives to the east or west, generally ends up located in Indiana, but this changes based on the census.
4. What Asian capital city, seen here, is found in the Klang Valley?

Answer: Kuala Lumpur

The Klang Valley makes up the most built-up region of Selangor, a Malaysian state on the Asian mainland that makes up part of peninsular Malaysia's west coast. And in the middle of this is Kuala Lumpur, one of Southeast Asia's largest cities; an economic powerhouse and a world-class city of sights both manmade and natural in origin. The Klang River, upon which the city was built, flows through the state and to the Straits of Malacca.

And of course, Kuala Lumpur is a city of world-famous landmarks. In the photo provided, the Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower (or Menara Kuala Lumpur) are particularly distinct fixtures on the skyline.
5. The Great Rift Valley cuts into what African nation, home to the cities of Kisumu and Kikuyu?

Answer: Kenya

A large East African country sitting on the Indian Ocean coast, Kenya has a varied geography that includes lowlands closer to the sea and fertile inlands around the colossal Great Rift Valley, a region created by the major tectonic shifts of several nearby plates. It's these shifts, over millions of years, that created Mount Kenya, the second-highest peak in the continent besides Kilimanjaro (south, in Tanzania).

Kisumu, in the southwest on the edge of Lake Victoria, is one of the largest cities in Kenya. Coincidentally, the only larger city on Lake Victoria's shoreline also starts with 'K'. It's Kampala, the capital of Uganda, found to the west
6. Found on the coast of the Andaman Sea, what Thai destination, home to Ko Lanta National Park, is known for its diving and rock climbing?

Answer: Krabi

The town and the province of Krabi are both found on a bend on the Andaman Sea coastline that creates Phang Nga Bay (across which you'll find the tourist city of Phuket). You might consider this region over the much busier Phuket though, since what you'll find is beautiful, sandy beaches and colossal limestone cliffs that create dramatic seascapes along the shore. Mu Ko Lanta National Park, which makes up the far end of Ko Lanta Island, is a bit of a respite, being known for its mountainous terrain, waterfalls, and local customs involving the region's characteristic longtail boats.
7. What desert, found in the south of Africa, is said to translate from a Bantu word meaning 'the great thirst'?

Answer: Kalahari

Crossing through Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, the Kalahari takes up a large proportion of the southern end of the continent, spanning nearly a million square kilometres of land. The Orange River, which crosses much of South Africa, is the only major waterway to flow through this region though at many points along its trail to the Atlantic, rainfall is minimal enough to dry out parts of its course from the Drakensbergs.

The Kalahari is less arid than the nearby Namib Desert, and because of this it's able to support more wildlife and plant life, much of which live in protected, seasonal wetlands like the massive Makgadikgadi Pan.
8. The Sea of Galilee is known by many names including Lake Tiberias and which of the following?

Answer: Lake Kinneret

Although it's known by many names, this body of water, a freshwater lake in the north of Israel, is the lowest of its kind in the world, being found nearly a fifth of a kilometre below sea level. The only deeper body of water is the Dead Sea, found due south.

With a storied history behind it, Lake Kinneret's name comes from the Hebrew Bible. Since those days, the lake has been an important stopover point for the Bronze Age Via Maris, a trading route that linked the Middle East (and Europe's empires) with Egypt to the southwest. Today, it's a Christian site of pilgrimage as it was a site at which Jesus performed miracles.
9. One of the smaller Middle Eastern countries, what 'K' nation is located near where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers flow into the Persian Gulf?

Answer: Kuwait

A small country with most of its citizens situated in a single major city, nearly all of Kuwait's economy has revolved around oil, and Kuwait City, with its massive skyscrapers, is indicative of the wealth to be had in said industry. But besides this, Kuwait is a uniquely-positioned country as it takes advantage not only of oilfields, but a spot on the edge of the Persian Gulf where the mouth of the Tigris and Euphrates drain the Fertile Crescent to the northeast.

It shares the many branching waterways to the sea with nearby Iran and Iraq, the latter of which only has fifty-eight kilometres of coastline, right next door to Kuwait's northern border.
10. What Indian state located on the Malabar Coast contains the city of Kochi (formerly Cochin)?

Answer: Kerala

One of the southernmost states in India, Kerala contains the coastal cities of Thiruvananthapuram and, if you're looking for more 'K' places, Kozhikode, Kochi, Kollam, and Kannur, all of which sit on the Malabar Coast looking out towards the Indian Ocean.

A tropical region of India, the coastline is low and wet while the eastern inland section gives way to the Sahyadri mountain range, also known as the Western Ghats. Despite having large cities (with Thiruvananthapuram being known as a regional tech hub), the Kerala region is known for heavy rains and is highly affected by lengthy monsoon seasons.
