An army fort was established near Cheyenne in 1867 and named for Brigadier General David A. Russell who was killed in the Civil War. The name was later changed to honor governor and US senator Francis E. Warren, and it is now a US Air Force strategic missile base.

Chugwater is a small town initially established as a railroad stop to load cattle being shipped east.

Casper, the second most populous city, derives its name from a nearby military post named for Lieutenant Caspar Collins who was killed by Native Americans in 1865.

The town of Cody, named after famous bison hunter, Army scout, and Wild West showman William F. Cody, is home to the Buffalo Bill Museum.

Cheyenne is the most populous city and capital of the state. It is home of the annual Frontier Days rodeo, famously designated "the Daddy of 'em All".

Rawlins is named for Union General John A. Rawlins whose troops provided security for a group who explored the area for the Union Pacific Railroad.

Sundance, in the northeast corner of the state, began as a trading post. It derives its name from the Native American sun dance ceremony.

Laramie County is one of the first five counties that comprised the state. Its name is derived from French-Canadian trapper Jacques La Ramee who explored the river given the same name.

President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill to begin preservation of the area that was later designated Grand Teton National Park. It encompasses 96,000 acres that include the Teton Mountains and six lakes.

Teapot Dome was designated a Naval oil reserve, but under Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall, it was leased to private oil production companies. This action led to a scandal that tarnished President Warren Harding's administration.
