IJN Mikasa was the Flagship of Admiral Togo in the Battle of Tsushima in 1905. During this battle the whole of the Russian Baltic fleet was destroyed. It was one of the greatest japanese naval victorys.

Thanks to the presence of mind of a fatally wounded officer the ship was saved.

The explosion was probably caused by an unnoticed small fire in the magazine for 'P' and 'Q' turrets which heated the cordite. When finally the whole magazine exploded HMS Vanguard sunk almost instantly killing 843 men.
