Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which dish was the one created for a Swedish king?

Answer: Veal Oscar

Created by French Chef Paul Edmond Malaise, it was served for the first time on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of King Oscar II's regency of Sweden in 1897. It included ingredients to which he was particularly partial.

The dish consists of veal cutlets topped with crab (or lobster) meat and a sauce such as Hollandaise. Two white asparagus spears are used as a garnish.

The image shows an Oscar award next to a cow. Veal comes from calves.
2. Which of the following is the traditional South African food?

Answer: Vetkoek

The image shows a wet cook from being rained on. BBQ food ("braai" in South Africa) is certainly a favourite in the country however from the selection given, the correct choice is vetkoek.

Vetkoek (meaning "fat cake") is a fried dough bread. It is thought to have been developed by Dutch settlers in the 1830s wanting a suitable travel food for the treks into the interior to avoid the British administration of South Africa. These days it is a comfort food served plain or with a filling such as curried mince.
3. Which is typically a fiery, spicy dish?

Answer: Vindaloo

The image shows a scene with a gust of wind (usually goes hand-in-hand in the Wild West with tumbleweed) and an outdoor loo. Combine the wind with a loo and you get the curry dish vindaloo. This dish was originally developed from a Portuguese dish, either vinha d'alhos (meat with garlic vinegar) or vindalho (made with pork), by cooks in Goa (capital of the Portuguese State of India from 1530).

Pork was used as their religion permitted eating pork once the Goans had converted to Christianity. The Portuguese liked the dish heavily spiced, so chili peppers were used. It was adapted for Anglo-Indian cuisine in the 19th century and used with other kinds of meat such as duck. It is a staple of British curry houses.
4. Long popular in Belgium, which food is cooked between plates?

Answer: Waffle

The image shows a person waffling to his companion. Perhaps they are waiting to be served waffles with their coffee. Popular in Belgium where there are over a dozen regional varieties, waffle-type foods were being made as early as the time of the Ancient Greeks.

Waffles traditionally were made of leavened dough or a batter cooked between two patterned heated plates (usually made of metal). The pattern gives the waffle its size, shape and embossed pattern. The waffle dog is a filled version which started off in the Philippines, in effect a sausage wrapped in waffle and then cooked in a shaped mould.
5. Which is the mostly meat-based feast from Kashmir?

Answer: Wazwan

Wazwan is a meal consisting mostly of meat-based dishes (such as lamb, chicken and mutton) mixed in with a few vegetarian dishes. It is an example of Kashmiri cuisine. The name translates as 'cook/cooking shop'. The royal wazwan is more of a banquet, consisting of 36 dishes of which between 15 and 30 are meat-based. Seven dishes are considered essential elements, including the aromatic curried meat dish rogan josh.

The image shows a crossed-out word 'one', in other words it 'was one'.
6. Pick out the German biscuit in this selection?

Answer: Wibele

Very small and sweet in a figure-8 shape, wibele is associated with the Swabian region in Germany. The recipe was invented in 1763 by Jakob Christian Carl Wibel, whose name is now tied to the biscuit.

The image shows a small bell ... or a wee bell.
7. Which is the traditional rice dish from Korea?

Answer: Yaksik

The sorry looking animal in the image is meant to be a sick yak, being tended by a vet. By way of contrast, yaksik (the sweet Korean dish) means 'medicine food'. It gets this name from the honey ingredient which is considered medicinal. Yaksik is made with glutinous rice and other ingredients such as chestnuts and jujube (red dates or Chinese dates). It is eaten at Jeongwol Daeboreum, as well as various other festivals and at weddings.
8. Which is the Greek version of the Turkish doner kebab? (Zoom in on the image to see the writing.)

Answer: Yiros (or gyros)

Yiros or gyros means 'turn' and is a loan translation of the Turkish 'döner'. Other Greek names such as soulvaki can also apply, depending on location. The 'turn' part refers the cooking of the meat on a vertical rotisserie. Once cooked, the meat is sliced and served wrapped or stuffed in a pita bread with ingredients such as tomato and tzatziki.

The coins in the image are Euros, the currency of the European Union. The pronunciation of the currency is closer to the Greek than the abbreviated form of gyroscope.
9. A traditional Czech and Slovak dessert, which of the following involves bread as a key ingredient?

Answer: Zemlovka

A baked sweet bread pudding, it is also called Scheiterhaufen. It is traditionally made with either rohliks or veka types of bread soaked in milk and with an apple layer on top. Several layers are made up, capped with pastry. There is cinnamon spicing and sugar for sweetness. A version uses pear instead of apple.

As to the image, 'them (boys) love car' sounds a bit like the dish.
10. Which one is a German version of the profiterole?

Answer: Windbeutel

While the French name means 'small profit or gratification', the German equivalent Windbeutel is more descriptive, namely 'wind bag'. In the U.S. it is known as a cream puff. The German version is made from a puff pastry and can be filled with cream or custard. Chocolate-coated versions are also popular.

The image shows a bottle being used as a musical instrument, giving the words 'wind' and 'bottle'.
