Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Feta is a pure white cheese pickled in brine and made predominantly with sheep's milk. It's the most popular cheese in Greece, and the country has taken steps to limit usage of the name to cheeses made nationally, though many countries outside Europe still use the name "feta" generically.

Galaktoboureko translates as "milk pastry" and is a semolina custard/phyllo pastry dessert pie.

Gyros, from the Greek word to "turn" is a rotisserie meat, often pork, typically wrapped with other ingredients including tzatziki sauce in pita bread.

Lagana is a simple bread, traditionally unleavened, made for the Eastern Orthodox Clean Monday holiday at the beginning of Great Lent.

Loukoumades, known since the Hellenistic period, are deep-fried dough balls soaked typically in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and/or nuts and served as a dessert.

Moussaka is one of the most widely known Greek dishes, typically consisting of sauteed eggplant in oil, sometimes mixed with potatoes, with a layer of minced lamb (or beef) and a layer of bechamel sauce on top.

Souvlaki is a popular street food of meat and vegetables on a wooden skewer, sometimes rolled in a pita à la gyros. "Souvlaki" is Greek for "skewer". Like moussaka, other countries have their own versions such as the Turkish shish kebab. In Athens, souvlaki is sometimes called "kalamaki".

Spanakopita translates as "spinach pie" and is a savory dish that typically includes spinach, feta cheese, onions, egg and spices baked in a phyllo pastry.

Taramasalata translates as "fish roe salad" and is made from fish roe typically mixed with olive oil, lemon juice and bread worked into a paste and served on a flat bread. As with lagana, this is another food popular on Clean Monday.

Tiropita translates as "cheese pie" and is a savory dish similar to spanakopita but lacking spinach. The cheese is mixed with egg for the filling, again encased in phyllo pastry. It's consumed at any meal or can be a snack.

Yachtziki is made up, Dolomites is the Alpine mountain range, Baradaniktos sans the "s" goes well with "Klaatu", Nikos Kazantzakis is a Greek novelist, and Diane Kochilas is a Greek/American chef who hosts the "My Greek Table" cooking show.
