Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are shuffling all of the cards in the deck to start the game. How many cards is that, exactly?

Answer: 56

Tichu has the traditional 52 card deck, plus four special cards: Dragon, Phoenix, Mah Jong, and Hound. This adds up to 56 cards.
2. You'd like to call Grand Tichu, but you have to do it when you have a specific number of cards in your hand. How many cards is this, exactly?

Answer: 8

Eight cards are taken by each player, and this is the only time that Grand Tichu may be called. After that, you will pick up six more cards.
3. It's your turn to start a hand, and you want to make a wish. Which of these cards MAY be wished for?

Answer: Ace

Any traditional playing card may be wished for, from 2 to Ace.
4. You decide to lead the trick with just the Phoenix. What is the value of the Phoenix when it starts the trick, and is played alone?

Answer: 1 and 1/2

The only time that the Phoenix has a full-point value is when it is used as a wild card with other cards. Otherwise, it is valued at 1/2 point above the card directly under it.
5. You've won the trick by using the Dragon. What happens to that trick?

Answer: It is given to an opponent, and you play again.

The Dragon is the highest-value card. It can only be played by itself. It always wins the trick, unless it is bombed.
6. Your partner goes out of cards first, but you go out last. What happens to the remaining card that you are holding?

Answer: They go to your opponents.

If you are out last, the tricks you've won go to the person out first, and your remaining cards are given to your opponents to score. Hopefully your partner went out first, so your team gets the points for the tricks that you won.
7. Play comes back to you. You play the Hound and skip your opponent, but your partner and the player after them is out of cards. What happens next?

Answer: You play next.

If you play the Hound, and your partner is out of cards, the next person to play is the next person in order that still has cards in their hand. In this scenario, that person would be you, so you would play again.
8. A powerful combination of cards has been played, but it CAN be beaten without using a bomb. Which of these combinations is on the table?

Answer: King, King, King, Ace, Ace

In a full house, only the set of three alike cards determines the value. This full house of King, King, King, Ace, Ace can be beaten using an Ace, Ace, Phoenix, and any other pair, since the Phoenix can be used as another Ace.
The others are the highest values in their respective combinations.
9. Boom! A bomb has been played! Out of these bombs, which has the highest value?

Answer: 2,3,4,5,6,7 (of the same suit)

Any straight bomb beats a four-of-a-kind bomb. The more cards there are in a straight bomb, the higher the value. The highest value bomb possible is 2 through Ace of the same suit.
10. The game is over, and no ties have occurred. Your team has received the highest total number of points possible. Tell me, what is your score?

Answer: 1395

If there is no tie, the game ends when one team reaches or exceeds 1000 points at the end of a round. The highest number of points possible without crossing 1000 is 995. If that team wins a Grand Tichu (worth 200 points) and achieves a double victory (first and second to run out of cards; worth 200 points), then they have added 400 to 995, and finished with 1395 points!
