1. The Godfather

Mario Puzo's 1969 classic "The Godfather" opens in Long Island, New York. The Corleone family settled in New York City after coming from Sicily to Ellis Island. Many key chapters are set in the "Big Apple". There are side stories in Sicily and Las Vegas but the bulk of the story is in New York.
2. Little House In The Big Woods

A forest in Wisconsin near Pepin is where Laura Ingalls Wilder's book "Little House In The Big Woods" takes place. The autobiographical book brings us Wilder's life in 1871 while living in a log cabin with her family. The book "Little House On The Prairie" had the family moving to Walnut Grove, Minnesota.
3. Their Eyes Were Watching God

Zora Neale Hurston released the Harlem Renaissance classic novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" in 1937. The story was set in Eatonville, Florida during the early years of the 20th Century. The novel was controversial for the African American slang language used and for the explicit themes of sexual discovery.
4. No Country For Old Men

"No Country For Old Men" was released in 2005 and written by Cormac McCarthy. The novel is set in Texas near the Rio Grande River on the border of Mexico. The desolate desert landscape of the American Southwest created a mood for the story. The story takes place in 1980 in Western Texas.
5. The Wonderful World Of Oz

Who can forget Dorothy's lines, "There's no place like home" and "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore". L. Frank Baum's classic told the story of Dorothy Gale and it was turned into an all-time classic motion picture. While the book opens and closes in Kansas, Dorothy is taken by tornado to the magical world of Oz for the majority of the story.

The children's fantasy book was written in 1900 and part of a multi-book series by Baum.
6. Carrie

Author Steven King set many of his greatest thriller novels in his home state of Maine. "Carrie" was released in 1974 and was actually Steven King's first horror novel. The story was set in Cumberland, Maine and told us the story of Carrie White. Carrie was an outcast at high school who discovered she had secret powers that would change the fate of her life.
7. A River Runs Through It

The novel "A River Runs Through It" was part of a trilogy of books by Norman Maclean. He released the series late in his life in 1976. The stories were semi-autobiographical and discussed Maclean's life growing up in Montana. Fly fishing and philosophical conversations about life and religion were themes brought up often in the classic novel.
8. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Ken Kesey's 1962 novel set the stage for the Academy Award winning film from 1975. The story of Randle Patrick McMurphy and Nurse Ratched was set in a psychiatric hospital in Oregon. Kesey had previously worked at a Menlo Park, California, Veterans' hospital, but chose to set his novel in an unnamed state hospital in Oregon.
9. Into The Wild

"Into The Wild" begins in April 1992, when we meet Chris McCandless in Healy, Alaska. The remote town is north of Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. The book was written by John Krakauer and released in 1996. While Chris does go on life changing journeys through the American West during the story, the book starts and ends in Alaska where McCandless dies nears Denali Mountain.
10. The Black Dahlia

"The Black Dahlia" is set in 1947 in Los Angeles, California. The classic novel described the murder mystery of Elizabeth Short. Corruption in the Los Angeles police department, the glitz of Hollywood, and the California lifestyle were key storylines in the book written by James Ellroy.
