Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who tells this story?

Answer: Mr Petherick

Mr Petherick is a solicitor so has seen his fair share of legal cases. He therefore chooses to put forward a case involving a problem with a client's will.
2. What was the name of Petherick's client?

Answer: Simon Clode

This case deals with Simon Clode who changes his will shortly before he dies in favour of a medium.
3. How did Simon Clode's granddaughter die?

Answer: Pneumonia

Simon's granddaughter had come to live with him after she was orphaned. She caught pneumonia and died. It was she that the medium was hired to contact.
4. What was the name of the medium Clode used?

Answer: Mrs. Euradyce Spragg

Mrs. Euradyce Spragg and her husband had become a permanent fixture in Clode's house, much to the disgust of his remaining family, and to Mr. Petherick.
5. What were the names of Clode's nephew and nieces who stood to lose their inheritance to the medium?

Answer: George, Grace and Mary

His nephew and nieces did not approve of the medium. Petherick describes how he became concerned about Mrs. Spragg after seeing how worried Grace's husband was that Clode would disinherit his family in favour of her.
6. True or False. Professor Longman said that the medium was a fraud.

Answer: False

He stayed at the house to view Mrs. Spragg at work but felt that he could not definitively say one way or another whether or not she was a fake. He did, however, confess to having an uneasy feeling about her.
7. What was the name of the housemaid?

Answer: Emma Gaunt

Emma was described as a tall middle-aged woman. She was also a witness who signed the will after passing Mr. Clode his pen.
8. True or False. the housemaid took the pen with which the will was written from the left hand drawer.

Answer: True

Mr. Clode said that he kept his pen in his right hand drawer and that she was looking in the wrong place. However, the pen that wrote and signed the will came from the left hand drawer.
9. What was in the envelope when it was opened following Clode's death?

Answer: Blank paper

A blank piece of paper was found in the envelope which Petherick sealed himself after the will had been written. Naturally this proved to be difficult for him to understand as he was there in person when the written will had been placed inside.
10. How was it possible that the paper was blank?

Answer: Invisible ink

The pen that had come out of the wrong drawer was actually filled with invisible ink, therefore meaning that the will in favour of Euradyce Spragg
disappeared. Miss Marple realises how this was done as she used to play with invisible ink as a child.
