Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cillian Murphy played the character Dr. Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) in Nolan's "Batman" film trilogy. Crane was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who performed experiments on inmates there. Which of the listed movies was Murphy NOT part of?

Answer: Batman Returns

"Batman Returns" was a film directed by Tim Burton. The Scarecrow was not in that movie.

Cillian Murphy was in all three Christopher Nolan films. The Scarecrow mixed a fear toxin which, when inhaled, made the victims see horrible images in their minds. When he was at the asylum he used the concoction on the inmates there, where they were called Crazies.
2. "Girl with a Pearl Earring" has Cillian playing the role of Pieter, who enjoys the company of the movie's main character, Griet. What job, along with his father, did the hard working young man do?

Answer: Butcher

The young Pieter frequently goes to the Vermeer home to bring them the choicest of meats from his family's butcher business. Scarlett Johansson plays Griet. Pieter sees the stress she is constantly under just working with that family as a maid, and tries to give her some way to ease her anxiety. Griet is working at the home of the famous Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. Eventually Pieter asks Griet to marry him.
3. In this movie, Murphy pays Donald Buchanan who is a high-ranking FBI agent. His role is to watch and study a radical anti-technology group named R.I.F.T. He also works with a government scientist (Morgan Freeman) to help stop the uploaded consciousness of Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) reach its potential. What is the name of the movie?

Answer: Transcendence

"Transcendence" came out in 2014 as an American science fiction thriller. It was considered a bomb at the box-office.

R.I.F.T. stands for 'Revolutionary Independence From Technology'. Eventually Buchanan is given the military power to stand up to the consciousness of Caster and the continued evolution of his digital presence and expanding nanotechnology. This all takes place in the desert in a town named Brightwood, a sort of utopian village. The good guys need to find a way to "infect" Caster, or else.
4. Cillian has a military role this time, playing a shell-shocked army officer who barely survives a U-boat sinking. Psychologically disturbed, he tries to take control of the small boat that saved him, and by doing so severely injures the boat's owner. Please name the movie.

Answer: Dunkirk

This 2017 historical war movie tries to show one small boat similar to many other small boats used by the UK in the many evacuation attempts of Dunkirk during WWII. Murphy plays a character with no name, except being known as Shivering Soldier. In Weymouth, a local civilian boat owner and his son board their smaller boat named Moonstone.

It has been requisitioned by the Royal Navy. It is a last gasp attempt to save the country along with the many other boats like theirs trying to do the same.
5. In the biographical thriller "Oppenheimer", Murphy plays the emaciated J. Robert Oppenheimer. In order to look the part, he had to lose a significant amount of weight. What 1970s rock and roller did Murphy watch to get inspiration from to help him reach his goals?

Answer: David Bowie

Bowie was the look and persona given by Christopher Nolan who Murphy could work on trying to become an emaciated J. Robert Oppenheimer. Murphy was inspired by the character of David Bowie as the Thin White Duke. The Thin White Duke was a persona and character Bowie fabricated when he was in public in the middle 1970s.

The film was based on the 2005 biography "American Prometheus". Robert Downey Jr. almost steals the show as United States Atomic Energy Commission member Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor).

And believe it or not, David Bowie did have a song featured in "Peaky Blinders". The song's name is "Lazarus", and it's from the last album he made named "Blackstar". It happens in Season 3, Episode 5, as it plays while Tommy Shelby is trying to recover some serious injuries. It's fairly well known that Bowie followed the series from its initial beginnings.
6. Cillian Murphy plays Patricia "Kitten" Braden, a transgender woman in search of her mother who she has not seen for many years. She leaves her tiny Irish town for bustling London in hopes to find her. Can you name the movie?

Answer: Breakfast on Pluto

The movie begins in Tyrellin, Ireland, during "The Troubles" in the 1970s. As a baby, Patrick is taken by his mother and dropped off at the local paronage, where his father, Father Liam lives. There he has a poor upbringing by a non-loving foster mother. The younger Patrick starts wearing lipstick and dresses which upset the family he is living with.
7. Coal merchant Bill Furlong works hard and is an honest man. He also is the father of five girls. He goes to the local convent to supply them of their needed coal where he finds a young girl locked in a cold coal shed. What is the name of the movie?

Answer: Small Things Like These

Claire Keegan wrote the novella of the same name in 2021. Matt Damon was actually one of the producers along with Murphy.

The film dedicated to the 56,000 victims of the Magdalene laundries in a period from 1922 to 1998.

Mr. Furlong (Murphy) starts to see an alarming history of seemingly strange occurrences. He meets a nun for dinner who tries to pay him off by giving him a letter with the name "Eileen" written on the outside. He decides not to give the Christmas card with money in it to his wife (Eileen).

One day he walks into the convent and takes the young girl home with him to be part of his family. They walk home in front of the people in the crowded streets who give them looks of disbelief. The Magdalene laundries was a large group of young women who were used to make the Roman Catholic nuns at the time a very nice income. The women were considered "fallen women".
8. Cillian Murphy plays the headteacher at an all-boy reform college. His job is to work with and improve the lives of the school of boys around him who have already had difficult lives in the first place. What is the name of the movie based on the 2023 novella "Shy"?

Answer: Steve

Max Porter finished the novella "Shy" in 2003. Steve is the name of the character played by Cillian Murphy. In an unusual twist, student Shy and teacher Steve both cautiously help each other in a reform college for troubled students. A reform college is also known as a reformatory.

It is an archaic term used in these type of schools around 1830 to 1900. It is for troubled teenagers who have a hard time coping with the world around them. Shy is played by Jay Lycurgo. Today they use the term "residential treatment centers", which clearly seems to divert itself away from what kind of school it really is.
9. Jim, played by Cillian Murphy, gets involved in a traffic accident as a bicycle courier, with head injuries so bad he goes into a coma. He wakes, nearly a month later and finds the entire hospital deserted. Name the movie.

Answer: 28 Days Later

Twenty eight days before Jim wakes up in the hospital, a group of animal rights activists break into a lab in Cambridge who a group of angry chimpanzees are being monitored. They overpower the helpers there and one of the activists lets one of the chimpanzees go to where she gets attacked and minutes later dies because of the infection.

Jim leaves the hospital, and ends up wandering the streets of London where he meets Mark and Selena who have not been infected by the virus.

At the end of the movie, Jim, Selena, and Hannah make this large banner that says "HELLO" and stretch it out while a plane flies over.
10. In 2026, as a continuation of the series, Murphy reprises his role as Thomas Shelby in the film "Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man". In the last scene, what happens to him?

Answer: cremated in a gypsy funeral wagon outdoors

His funeral was performed in the traditional Romani standard with his body being placed in a gypsy wagon. The wagon was then set on fire to cremate the body. The wagon is called a vargo.

"Duke" Shelby is the oldest son of Tommy Shelby, born out of wedlock just after World War I. He takes on the role of the new Rom Baro, which is the head of the Peaky Blinders. One day, Tommy is nearly killed when he takes a couple of bullets from a Nazi agent named John Beckett in cross-fire between the two, played by Tim Roth. Tommy, knowing he is going to die, has his son, Duke, end his life by shooting him with a bullet that had the name "Tommy Shelby" etched on it.
