Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the motion picture "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars" (1953), did Lester, played by Bud Abbott, and Orville, played by Lou Costello, know each other before they met on the rocket ship?

Answer: No

Orville is the oldest orphan in the Hideaway Orphans Home where he does yard work. He is accidentally trapped in a truck which delivers him to a top-secret rocket base. Laboratory worker Lester directs Orville to load supplies onto a rocket ship preparing to blast off.

While the pair are on board, Orville accidentally ignites the rocket engines and they blast off. Adventures ensue. The film departed from the long-time set up in which Abbott and Costello's characters already knew each other at the outset of the movie.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Inside My Brain

The make-up artist, Charles Gemora, for "The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake" (1959), also designed and made the shrunken heads used in the film. The death-mask on Marian's tombstone in "The Screaming Skull" (1958) is a reproduction of a real death mask, "l'Inconnue de la Seine", cast in the late 19th century from the face of a woman who drowned in the Seine in Paris. French actor Michel Simon plays the title role in "The Head" (1959). As Professor Doctor Abel, his head is shown without his body.

In 1980, the American punk rock band Angry Samoans released an album titled "Inside My Brain" in 1980. In 1986, American cartoonist Robert Dennis Crumb, the creator of Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, Shuman the Human, and The Snoid, created an etching called "Little Guy That Lives Inside My Brain". In 2019, author Jim Goad wrote 42 essays published as "The Bomb Inside My Brain". Film producer and music artist Lancen Gm (formerly Gao-ming Li) released an animated music video called "Stuck Inside My Brain, Pt.1" in 2022. No record of a 1950s film called "Inside My Brain" could be found.
3. What sort of monster is Guaddi in "Prehistoric Women" (1950)?

Answer: an eight-foot-tall savage wild man

Johann Kristinn Petursson (1913-1984) was a 7-foot 8 inch tall Icelandic actor and circus performer. He was cast in "Prehistoric Women" as a wild man named "Guaddi" who lived in the jungle and killed people, including Tana, the mother of Tigri, the present leader of the cave women. Producer Albert J. Cohen was so impressed with Petursson that he ordered two additional scenes featuring him to be added to the shooting schedule.
4. Which actor played Doctor Bradshaw's assistant in "Indestructible Man" (1956)?

Answer: Joe Flynn

Joe Flynn played the unnamed laboratory assistant to Dr. Bradshaw in "Indestructible Man". He is the one who obtains Butcher Benton's body from the mortuary and brings it to Bradshaw in his laboratory. Once their ministrations revive Butcher from the dead, he thanks them by killing them both. Flynn plays a serious role in this motion picture.

He was better known, however, for his comedic role as Captain Wallace B. (Wally) Binghamton in TV's "McHale's Navy" (1962-1966).
5. In "Creature From the Black Lagoon" (1954), the expedition of David, Carl, Mark, Kay Lawrence, and Edwin retain a battered tramp steamer to go up the Amazon River. What is the name of the boat they hire?

Answer: Rita

Nestor Paiva (1905-1966) played Captain Lucas, the master of the somewhat decrepit motor vessel Rita in "Creature From the Black Lagoon". Paiva was of Portuguese descent; the film was set in Portuguese-speaking Brazil. Captain Horatio Huffenpuff was the master of the Leakin' Lena on the television cartoon "Beany and Cecil" (1962).

A Portuguese-American fisherman, Manuel Fidello, played by Spencer Tracy, was the master of the We're Here, a fishing schooner in the film version of "Captains Courageous" (1897, novel by Rudyard Kipling; 1937 motion picture).

In Sebastian Junger's 1997 novel "The Perfect Storm" and the 2000 motion picture of the same name, Captain Frank William "Billy" Tyne, Jr. is the master of the sword-fishing boat Andrea Gail out of Gloucester, Massachusetts.
6. In what country was the horror motion picture "El vampiro" (1957) made?

Answer: Mexico

"El vampiro" was created by Mexican director Fernando Mendez and Mexican producer, actor and director Abel Salazar. Salazar said he set out to "make Dracula set on a Mexican hacienda". The movie was shot on location in Mexico. The film was produced by Cinematografica ABSA, which was also responsible for "The Brainiac" (1962), "The Curse of the Crying Woman" (1961), "The World of the Vampires" (1961), and "The Living Head" (1963).

It was distributed by Alameda Distribucion of Mexico City, Mexico.
7. Why did the Pairan aliens come to Earth in "Warning from Space" (1956)?

Answer: to warn of an impending planetary collision

The Pairan Ginko, in her disguise as Hikari Aozora, explains to the scientists at the observatory that a rogue planet, called Planet R, was heading toward a collision with the Earth. She urges the World Congress to deploy nuclear missiles to destroy Planet R. This course of action is ineffective. The scientist Matsuda had a formula for an atomic device much more potent than those used to date. This formula is given to the Pairans who use it to destroy Planet R, thereby saving the Earth.
8. For what is Michael Landon best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Michael Landon (1936-1991) was well-known for his roles on American television: Little Joe Cartwright on "Bonanza" (1959-1973), Charles Ingalls on "Little House on the Prairie" (1974-1983), and Jonathan Smith on "Highway to Heaven" (1984-1989). He was 20 years old when he portrayed the troubled high-school teen-ager Tony Rivers in "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957).
9. Aside from the opening scenes which take place on a train in Central Europe, where is "The Return of Dracula" (1958) set?

Answer: Carleton, California

Dracula escapes Transylvania. He murders a Czech artist named Bellac Gordal on a train in Central Europe and assumes his identity. Bellac has distant relatives living in a small community in California called Carleton. Dracula, posing as Gordal, travels to Carleton, where sanguinary trouble ensues.
10. What was Wally Westmore's role in making the motion picture "The Space Children" (1958)?

Answer: make-up

Walter 'Wally' James Westmore (1906-1973) was a make-up artist for over 300 Hollywood films. He was one of six brothers, all of whom earned distinction in cinematic make-up: Monte, Perc, Ern, Wally, Bud and Frank. Wally Westmore also did the make-up for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1931), "Island of Lost Souls" (1932), "When Worlds Collide" (1951), "The War of the Worlds" (1953), "Conquest of Space" (1955), "The Colossus of New York" (1958), "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" (1958), "Visit to a Small Planet" (1960), "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" (1964), "Village of the Giants" (1965), and "Project X" (1968).

His father, noted make-up artist George Westmore, was doubtless very proud of Wally.
