Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Robot Monster" (1953), what kind of creature was Ro-Man?

Answer: a gorilla with a diving helmet

Ro-Man's full name is Ro-Man Extension XJ-2 but it is shortened to Ro-Man in the movie. He is a gorilla (or a man in a gorilla suit) wearing a deep-sea diver's hard helmet to which antennae have been appended. This helmet looks remarkably like the ones used by the moon-men in "Radar Men from the Moon" (1952). Ro-Man is a killing machine, having annihilated the entire population of the Earth excepting eight people.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: A Stranger Comes Among Us

In "The Strange Door" (1951), Joseph Pevney directed Charles Laughton and Boris Karloff. In "The Strange World of Planet X" (1958), called "Cosmic Monsters" in the United States, Gilbert Gunn directed Forrest Tucker and Gaby André. In "Stranger From Venus" (1954), also called "Immediate Disaster" and "The Venusian", producer Burt Balaban directed Patricia Neal, Helmut Dantine and Derek Bond.

The Old Testament Book of Leviticus says, "The stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you" (19:34 KJV). Sidney Lumet directed Melanie Griffith in a 1992 motion picture called "A Stranger Among Us". Canadian playwright Aaron Bushkowsky wrote "Strangers Among Us", a play about two people with Alzheimer's Disease in 1998. Christopher Wesley Moore wrote, directed and starred in the movie "A Stranger Among the Living" (2019). No movie called "A Stranger Comes Among Us" was produced in the 1950s.
3. In "The Angry Red Planet" (1959), how was the three-eyed-tiki-statue monster killed, if at all?

Answer: it wasn't killed; it survived

The three-eyed-tiki-statue monster is first seen by Dr. Ryan, as she is looking out the window of the MR-1 spaceship. She is the only one who sees it, and the others think she is imagining things. The monster follows their activities on the planet's surface from a distance.

In the conclusion, it releases them from the force field which has prevented their blast off and gives them a message to take back to the leaders of the Earth.
4. What do William Bryant, Wanda Curtis, Douglas Henderson, and Patti Gallagher have to do with the motion picture "King Dinosaur" (1955)?

Answer: They are the four principal actors.

There are only four named actors who appear in "King Dinosaur". William Bryant plays medical specialist Dr. Ralph Martin. Wanda Curtis plays a chemist, Dr. Patricia Bennett. Douglas Henderson plays zoologist Dr. Richard Gordon. Patti Gallagher plays Dr. Nora Pierce, a geologist.

The narrator (who does not "appear" on screen) is Marvin Elliott Miller (1913-1985), who was also the voice of Robby the Robot in "Forbidden Planet" (1956).
5. In "The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent" (1957), why, when the Viking women (and Ottar) see Stark's stronghold and mead hall, do they suspect that the imprisoned Viking men are nearby?

Answer: The building shows Viking craftsmanship.

The well-made stronghold and mead hall exhibit the kind of craftsmanship which Vikings invest in their buildings. Ottar and Desir suspect that the barbaric Grimaults are incapable of such sophisticated and distinctive handiwork. In the Anglo-Saxon poem "Beowulf", the Danish King Hrothgar holds forth in Heorot, a mead hall of the same sort as Stark's.

The Viking men are, at present, imprisoned by the Grimaults and forced to labour in Stark's mines but had previously been compelled to build the mead hall.
6. What was the source of the script for "She Demons" (1958)?

Answer: an original by Richard Cunha and H.E. Barrie

When director Richard Cunha completed "Giant from the Unknown" (1958), Astor Pictures said they would buy it only if Cunha produced another film so the movies could be shown as a double feature. Cunha turned to H.E. Barrie, who wrote the screenplays for two other Cunha films: "Missile to the Moon" (1958) and "Frankenstein's Daughter" (1958). Cunha and Barrie banged out a quick script for "She Demons" and went promptly into production.
7. What did the little boy Mike take with him on the spaceship in "When Worlds Collide" (1951)?

Answer: a pregnant foundling dog

Dave Randall and Doctor Tony Blake are flying a helicopter to provide flood relief after Zyra passes the Earth. They spot a little boy, Mike, and rescue him from a rooftop where he is stranded. They include him in the list of 45 passengers who will escape to Zyra. Mike finds a stray dog and doesn't want to leave Earth without it. Doctor Drake and Joyce Hendron weigh the dog and agree to leave two chickens behind to make up for its weight.

When the ship crash-lands on Zyra, the passengers disembark including Mike, his dog and the litter of puppies which she delivered while on board.
8. For what is Nora Hayden best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Norah Helene Hayden (1930-2013) was a beautiful and successful model, actress, singer, and author. She acted on stage, on television and in television commercials. In 1955, she was the spokesmodel for Mercury automobiles. She wrote a sex manual "How to Satisfy a Woman Every Time - And Have Her Beg for More!" in 1983 and sold over half a million copies. Hayden's film appearances were varied, e.g. as a harem girl in "Son of Sinbad" (1955) and as a PhD in "The Angry Red Planet" (1959).
9. Where is the motion picture "Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" (1959) set?

Answer: Los Angeles, California

In the spooky teen comedy "Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow" (1959), a group of hot-rod club members lose their meeting place in Los Angeles. They move to an old deserted haunted mansion. The movie was filmed in Los Angeles, in particular near Valleyheart Drive and Wilkinson Avenue in Studio City, and in Moorpark Park, also in Studio City.
10. In "Spaceways" (1953), with whom does Doctor Stephen Mitchell fall in love after his unfaithful wife Vanessa has fallen in love with the project's biologist Doctor Philip Crenshaw?

Answer: Doctor Lisa Frank

Doctor Lisa Frank, played by Eva Bartok (1927-1998), was a mathematician working on the Deanfield space project. She was secretly in love with Doctor Stephen Mitchell, who was estranged from his wife due to her infidelity. Mitchell, who had ceased to love his wife Vanessa years before, is attracted to Frank, who he ends up kissing. Mitchell prepares to take the second rocket, AS2, up into Earth orbit, accompanied by the project's fuel expert, Doctor Toby Andrews, played by Michael Medwin.

When they achieve orbit and remove their helmets, Mitchell discovers that it is his newfound love Lisa in the co-pilot's seat rather than Toby.
