NOVA is a company that builds killer robots with advanced weapons and great maneuverability. They do this for the military. Most of the robots do whatever NOVA commands them to do. These tasks include making meals and making drinks for the men at the company, and shooting whenever they are asked to.

A lightning strike hits a tall building and the lightning goes through the power lines and gets inside Number Five, who was hooked up to the building's power supply. A couple of men see lightning impacting Number Five and assume that he has been ruined. After they go away, we see Number Five moving on his own (as opposed to the other robots who move on command). He escapes from the NOVA building, which causes a manhunt for him.

Answer: An animal lover

Number Five flees on the road and ends up on a bridge. To avoid getting run over, he jumps off the bridge. To avoid falling in the water, he activates his parachute. He ends up falling on a truck far away from where he came from. The truck belongs to Stephanie, an animal caregiver. After landing on the truck, he somehow gets inside it after she gets out of it.

Her abusive ex-boyfriend comes to her house a few times to try and get back to her. The first time, she tells him to go away and he does. He returns later in the movie when she appears on TV (because she knows Number Five). Number Five outwits him. Number Five steals his car and destroys it. Then, he fires weapons at the ex, which destroy his hat and make his pants fall down.

Answer: Alien

One night, she hears weird voices coming from inside her truck. Initially, she thinks it's her ex-boyfriend so she goes there to scare him away. She discovers Number Five. She thinks he is an alien. He thinks he is malfunctioning. She invites him into her home and teaches some things about Earth. She gives him every book that she has. He can read a book cover-to-cover in about a second and he reads them all. When he demands more input after that, she lets him watch her TV. He does that all night.

Eventually, she sees a label on him that says his name is "Number Five" and he is from NOVA. That's when she learns that he is a robot. She calls NOVA to let them know that she has him. This leads to him fleeing in her truck.

Answer: He kills a grasshopper.

Number Five sees a grasshopper hopping through Stephanie's yard. He decides to jump like the grasshopper for fun. He jumps too far and lands on the grasshopper. He thinks that he disassembled the grasshopper and he asks her to reassemble it, thinking that she can bring the grasshopper back to life.

This is when she teaches him about death. When he understands, he realizes that when NOVA say that they are going to disassemble him, they mean that they will kill him. This causes him to panic.

Answer: He escapes.

After he learns about death and realizes that NOVA is going to kill him, he steals Stephanie's truck. Stephanie manages to get inside the truck, but she can't get him to stop driving it. All she can do is tell him which way to go. He drives wildly for a while, sometimes driving on the wrong side of the road. Unfortunately, he has a tracking device inside of him. This allows NOVA to find the truck and corner him and Stephanie at the edge of a cliff. They put him inside the truck and intend to take him to the NOVA headquarters to disassemble him and repair him.

They think that they deactivated him first. It turns out that Number Five was just pretending to be deactivated. As they are driving away, he escapes the NOVA truck, steals another truck, throws the tracking device out the window and it lands in another truck, and he returns to Stephanie. The tracking device leads the military to a group of elderly farmers. They corner them and stop them, which confuses them and scares them. The wife thinks they are being arrested because they have some kind of drug.

Stephanie reluctantly allows Number Five to spend the night. She cares for him, but she doesn't want him there because she knows that NOVA will find him there. She allows him to spend one night there and then says that he has to go. He stays up all night watching TV, waking up her animals who then wake up her. He watches a music video and then dances along to it. When she comes along, he dances with her.

Answer: Newton

Newton Crosby, who has a PHD, is the designer of the robots. Number Five and Stephanie meet up with him to convince him that Number Five is alive. Newton witnesses a lot of unusual behavior from Number Five, but it takes a lot of effort to convince him that Number Five is alive. Eventually, Newton tells a joke and Number Five laughs at it.

This is when he realizes that Number Five is alive. This is when he joins Stephanie in their quest to keep Number Five safe from NOVA and the military.

Answer: He creates a decoy and releases it from the truck.

After Newton joins forces with Stephanie and Number Five, they all find themselves cornered by the Army, It turns out that Skroeder, NOVA's chief of security who hates robots, called in the Army to kill Number Five. Newton and Stephanie try to convince them that Number Five is alive, but they don't believe them.

We then appear to see Number Five fleeing from the truck and running as fast as he can. The military fire all their weapons at him and while dozens of them miss, one of them hits him and kills him. They salvage the remnants of the robot as trophies to celebrate their kill. Dr. Marner, the president of the company is enraged. He had told his employees to find Number Five and bring him back to the NOVA headquarters alive. It cost $11 million to build each robot, so when Number Five was destroyed, Dr. Marner's $11 million was completely wasted. As a result, he fires Skroeder.

As the military go away, Newton quits working for NOVA. Then, he and Stephanie get in the truck and he starts driving and tries to console a devastated Stephanie. Number Five comes out from under the truck, revealing that he is alive, he had been hiding under the truck the whole time, and he created a clone of himself to mislead the military and it was the clone that they killed.

Answer: Montana

After Newton quits his job with NOVA, he reveals that he has a farm up in Montana, with plenty of space for all of Stephanie's animals and for Number Five. They all agree to go there together. This suggests that she is starting a relationship with Newton and they will take care of Number Five and her animals together.

Answer: Johnny

Number Five does not like the name Number Five. He names himself Johnny Five after the song "Who's Johnny?" by El DeBarge. The song comes up a few times in the movie. Number Five watches the video for the song in his first night at Stephanie's house and again during the second time at her house. She dances with him the second time. It comes up again on the car's radio as the movie ends.
