Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. At Malreaux Point, McGrath's troops are standing in the middle of a field, doing nothing. In a boat on a nearby river, McGrath and Loveless are having council with some foreign investors. Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. West and Gordon are on their way to track down General McGrath. West instinctively believes McGrath is headed to New Orleans, but Gordon prefers a logical approach to the case, and depends on the severed head of Professor Morton (the decapitated man shown before the credits) to decide their destination. What is the theory that Gordon explains that supports his dependency on the Professor?

Answer: the Retinal Terminus theory

According to Gordon, the Retinal Terminus theory claims that a dying person's last conscious sight is burned into the back of his eyes, and to prove it, he has Morton's head hooked up to an old-fashioned candle projector, displaying the late professor's last image: McGrath.

In the image, it says on an invitation in McGrath's pocket to meet at a masquerade ball in New Orleans, solidifying Gordon and West's intent to catch him there.
2. When West infiltrates the plantation that the costume ball is being held at, we get a glimpse about how he feels about being in the biggest city of a major former slave state: when he passes a strange old portrait in the study. What does he say to himself when he sees it?

Answer: "White folks . . ."

Those are the "highly-regarded" thoughts of Southerners held by Captain James West. Although, his tone clearly shows displeasure. This gives insight to his opinions of white people.
3. During the festivities, the host of the party, Dr. Arliss Loveless, makes a very flashy introduction. Who portrays Dr. Loveless?

Answer: Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh plays the legless villain of the film. He is known for films such as as 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' (which he also directed), 'The Road to El Dorado' (also starring Kevin Kline, by coincidence), and some as recent as 'Valkyrie'.
4. During the festivities, West has a chance to meet up with Dr. Loveless again. During their little chat, they hide something in their conversation that, in order to understand, you have to think about the other meanings to the things they say. What do they inconspicuously do during their conversation?

Answer: They sling insults at each other.

Loveless insults West because he's black, using such terms as "color" and "slave", while West insults Loveless about having no bottom half, with terms like "stand up" and "cut the legs out from under you." This perpetuates the fact that, while the two may be in public, they still hate each other immensely.
5. After Loveless concludes a secret meeting with General McGrath in the study, West sneaks in and finds out what they're up to. He finds out that McGrath's troops will be collecting at a field not far from there; what is the field's name?

Answer: Malreaux Point

Loveless has McGrath bring his troops to Malreaux Point for some yet-unknown reason. But whatever reason it is, West is determined to find out.

After he finds out, however, West tries to find Gordon and tell him what he learned. When he does, however, a series of chaotic circumstances come about ...
6. When West finds who he thinks is Gordon, he tells him about Loveless, McGrath, and their meeting place, and mocks his outfit by drumming his hands on his fake breasts. However, West soon learns that 'Gordon' is actually a real woman, who slaps him in the face out of extreme resentment. What is the next thing someone in the crowd shouts, in order to deal with the situation?

Answer: 'Hang him!'

The crowd takes this suggestion into consideration (to say the least) and lead West out front by gunpoint to lynch him.

Unknown to West or anyone else, the one who shouts this order is the real Gordon, in disguise, who uses the order to clear the building and distract the party-goers, while he searches for the kidnapped scientists.
7. While Gordon is searching for the missing scientists, he stumbles upon a young woman named Rita (Salma Hayek), trapped in a cage in the bedroom. She distrusts Gordon at first because of his outlandish attire, but he attempts to put her at ease with a bit of dry humor. He makes a reference to a famous writer from that time period - who is it?

Answer: James Fenimore Cooper

James Fenimore Cooper was a 19th century author, known for his works of historical fiction, mainly frontiersman stories such as "Leatherstocking Tales". Gordon's disguise much resembles that of a character from these novels, hence the small joke: "Please, I know I must look like something out of James Fenimore Cooper, but I assure you, I mean you no harm."
8. When Gordon and Rita finally escape the plantation (after a very awkward botched hanging), West jumps on board a carriage with them, understandably angry at Gordon for his deceit. So much so, in fact, that West wants to throw him off the carriage.

Answer: False

Actually, West wants to shoot him, but that's before Gordon introduces him to Rita and explains that the rubber rope he had planted for use in the "lynching" was supposed to distract the party-goers.
9. At Malreaux Point, McGrath's troops are standing in the middle of a field, doing nothing. In a boat on a nearby river, McGrath and Loveless are having council with some foreign investors. Moments later, something comes over to the men from a distance and begins slaying them all. What is it?

Answer: a tank

Loveless's patented weapon of mass destruction, an armored tank with a revolving cannon, is being used on McGrath's men, as a demonstration for the foreign dignitaries. Angry and betrayed, McGrath attempts to assassinate Loveless, but Loveless activates a hidden revolver in his chair and slays the General, ordering his servant girls to toss him into the river.
10. West, Gordon and Rita reach Malreaux Point too late, and observe the dead bodies of former Confederate soldiers. West had seen a slaughter like this before, at a free slave town in Illinois during the Civil War. What was the name of that town?

Answer: New Liberty

West served with the 9th cavalry and was on assignment in New Liberty, Illinois, when he and his men discovered the corpses of seniors, women, and children, killed by the same machine as the one that slaughtered McGrath's men. From then on, West vowed to find and kill the one he thought was credited with the title "the Butcher of New Liberty", General McGrath. Upon finding his near-dead nemesis lying on a riverbank, West learns that the one who truly deserves the title is Loveless and his deathly machinery.
