The song 'Smoke on the Water' is perhaps the most well-known single by the British Rock band Deep Purple, which was formed in London, England, in 1968. It was released as a single from their 1972 album 'Machine Head'. It reached number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. It wasn't released in the UK until 1977 and reached number 21 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song is based on an event which actually occurred when the band was in Montreux, Switzerland, to record their 'Machine Head' album at the Montreux Casino. The band Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention were in concert there, during which a fan fired a flare gun. This caused the heating system to explode, setting the building on fire.
Fortunately, no one was killed as they were evacuated safely. However, the Casino itself was completely destroyed by the fire.
The band watched the inferno from their hotel and the smoke from it over Lake Geneva, and later, the members were inspired to write 'Smoke on the Water' as a result of this. Bassist Roger Glover came up with its title. It, as I previously said, must surely be one of, if not their most, well-recognised songs. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2017.
