Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Yesterday Man' (1965)

Answer: Chris Andrews

'Yesterday Man' is a single written and recorded by British singer-songwriter Chris Andrews. It was released in 1965 and reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and number one in Ireland, New Zealand, and Germany, as well as Austria. It sold 20,000 copies on its first day in England. It was also one of the earliest UK-penned hits to become popular on the German Schlager scene.

Before this, Chris had already written songs for various artists, including 'Girl Don't Come', 'Message Understood' and 'Long Live Love' (which were top-ten hits for Sandie Shaw). He also wrote 'The First Time' and 'We Are in Love' for Adam Faith, plus 'I'll Remember Tonight' for The Mamas & the Papas, 'Our Love Has Gone' for The Fortunes and 'Heart of Stone' for Suzi Quatro.
2. 'Yesterday, When I Was Mad' (1994)

Answer: Pet Shop Boys

Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, 'Yesterday, When I Was Mad' is a Pet Shop Boys' single released in 1994 from their album 'Very'. It reached number 13 on the UK Singles Chart and number four on the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart. It was also ranked number 28 in the Netherlands and number 72 in Germany.

The single mix is completely different from the album version, as it's a full re‑record with sharper beats and a more theatrical vocal. The B‑side 'Euroboy' became a cult favourite in its own right, which some fans think should've been the A‑side.
3. 'Yesterday Once More' (1973)

Answer: Carpenters

'Yesterday Once More' was written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis and recorded by The Carpenters. It was released as a single from their album 'Now & Then'. It reached number two on both the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. It was also number one in Canada.

Lyricist John Bettis later said that the song was the fastest lyric he ever wrote and that the nostalgia theme came so naturally that the entire song was drafted in a single sitting, which was rare for Richard and him. Richard built the whole Oldies Medley on 'Now & Then' around this song, meaning 'Yesterday Once More' is a rare case where a hit single doubles as the blueprint for the whole album.
4. 'Yesterday's Men' (1985)

Answer: Madness

'Yesterday's Men' is a single by the British band Madness, from their album 'Mad Not Mad'. Written by Suggs (Graham McPherson) and Chris Foreman, it reached number 18 on the UK Singles Chart in 1985 and number ten in Ireland.

It marked a shift for Madness away from their jaunty ska nuttiness to a melancholy pop sound, making it one of the clearest signposts of their mid‑80s reinvention. Its reflective tone and polished production are often cited as early signs of the band's shift toward more adult, introspective songwriting.
5. 'Yesterdays' (1992)

Answer: Guns 'N Roses

Written by Axl Rose, West Arkeen, Del James and Billy McCloud, 'Yesterdays' is a single by American rock band Guns N' Roses from their album 'Use Your Illusion II'. It reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 72 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1992. Its lyrics reflect the theme of letting go of the past.

The video for 'Yesterdays' was shot in stark black‑and‑white, a deliberate contrast to the big‑budget epics of the Illusion era. It's one of the few GN'R videos that spotlights the band performing without narrative spectacle, giving it a stripped‑back, almost documentary feel.
6. 'That Girl Belongs to Yesterday' (1964)

Answer: Gene Pitney

'That Girl Belongs to Yesterday' is a single by American singer Gene Pitney. It was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones). It reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart in 1964, but failed to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

It was one of the very first Jagger-Richards compositions ever released, predating most early Stones originals, making Gene part of an early chapter in the Stones' songwriting evolution. The Rolling Stones actually recorded their own version of the song, but it was never officially released. Gene had previously met them at their early recording sessions in London, in 1964.

Gene wrote hits for others, including 'Today's Teardrops' for Roy Orbison, 'Rubber Ball' for Bobby Vee, 'Hello Mary Lou' for Ricky Nelson and 'He's a Rebel' for the Crystals.
7. 'Since Yesterday' (1984)

Answer: Strawberry Switchblade

Written by Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson, 'Since Yesterday' is a single by the Scottish synth-pop duo Strawberry Switchblade. It reached number five on the UK Singles Chart in 1984. It was their only major UK hit and became a cult classic of mid‑80s synth‑pop.

Although often remembered as bright and sugary, 'Since Yesterday' is built on a surprisingly dark musical foundation. Its opening fanfare is adapted from Sibelius' Symphony No. 5. Rose McDowall said that the song is about nuclear war. However, other interpretations are that it's about nostalgia, regret, the passage of time and also suicide.
8. 'Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday' (1969)

Answer: Stevie Wonder

Written by Ron Miller and Bryan Wells 'Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday' is a single by American singer‑songwriter Stevie Wonder. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number seven on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.

The song was first recorded by Motown's blue‑eyed soul singer Chris Clark in 1966. It sat unreleased for decades, making Stevie's version the first heard but not the first recorded. Stevie recorded the track in 1967 but because of vocal problems he was having, Motown didn't release it until 1969.
9. 'That Was Yesterday' (1985)

Answer: Foreigner

'That Was Yesterday', written by Mick Jones and Lou Gramm, was released as a single by American band Foreigner from their 1985 Album 'Agent Provocateur'. It reached number 28 on the UK Singles Chart and number 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

'That Was Yesterday' was the follow‑up to Foreigner's number one ballad 'I Want to Know What Love Is'. Mick Jones said that the song is about 'a relationship that failed, which you're still clinging onto'. Also, the synth intro wasn't just an aesthetic choice, as it was meant to mirror the emotional fog of the lyrics.
10. 'It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday' (1991)

Answer: Boyz II Men

'It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday' is a single by American R&B group Boyz II Men and is a track on their 1991 album 'Cooleyhighharmony'. It was written by husband-and-wife songwriters Freddie Perren and Christine Yarian for the 1975 film 'Cooley High'. It reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the US Cash Box Top 100.

Boyz II Men's cover version is an a cappella‑driven arrangement and is one of the tracks that earned their reputation for harmony‑rich emotional ballads. Because the group recorded it almost entirely a cappella, it became a demonstration of their trademark vocal blend, so much so that early radio programmers reportedly mistook it for a gospel track.
