Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Danish city was the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Copenhagen

The competition was held in Copenhagen, at the Tivolis Koncertsal. The Tivolis, according to (you guessed it) the Google translation from its own website, "is a historic and unique concert hall, which is world renowned for its good acoustic. In 2005, the Concert Hall, which was built in 1953, an extensive renovation and was in this context include en a beautiful new sound to be in gold leaf." I don't know about you, but I'd love to see sound in gold leaf! In its latest renovation, in a foyer under the seats, the longest salt-water aquarium in Europe now occupies one side.
2. Which country won the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Italy

Italy won with their entry "Non ho l'eta" ("I am not Old Enough"). Actually, their singer, Gigliola Cinquetti, was old enough - she was sixteen and therefore met the requirements of the Eurovision Song Contest with regard to the age of the performers.
3. The UK's 1964 entry was a song called "I Love The Little Things". Who sang it?

Answer: Matt Monro

Matt Monro was from London and made his name as the lead singer with the BBC Show Band. Highly popular in the late 1950s, his career waned to the point that when asked to help with a recording, his version was recorded under a false name. However, his career took off again in the early 1960s and he had a string of hits, including "Portrait of My Love", "Softly as I Leave You", and the theme song from the movie "Born Free".
4. During the filming of the show, a man jumped onto the stage with a banner reading "Boycott Franco & Salazar". After which country's performance did he stage his protest?

Answer: Switzerland

It happened right after Switzerland performed their song, "I miei pensieri" ("My Thoughts"). They were the 14th country to perform, so it was nearing the end of the competition. While the man was removed from the auditorium, television viewers were treated to a view of the scoreboard.
5. How many entries in the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest were sung in English?

Answer: one

This year only one song was performed in English. It was, needless to say, the entry from the United Kingdom, the song ""I Love The Little Things".
6. One country withdrew from the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest. Which country was this?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden's singers decided to boycott the event, for reasons not now available. The Swedish broadcasters did, however, did show the contest.
7. For one country, the 1964 contest was their first. Which country was this?

Answer: Portugal

Portugal participated for the first time this year. Their entry, "Oracao" ("Prayer") was in the tie for last place.
8. Who was the presenter at the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Lotte Waever

Lotte Waever hosted the event. According to a translation of Wikipedia, she was born in 1942 and "was among the first television speaker girls in Denmark". Apparently "Speaker Girls" may have been a television programme, as it goes on to state "Speaker Girls on TV was abolished in September 1971." She also apparently appeared in one film.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Ballet-harlequinade

The entertainment was the Ballet-harlequinade, although it has not been possible to find any information about it.

Anna Margrethe Schall was a Danish ballerina, Max bruel was a Danish architect and jazz musician, and Victor Borge was an internationally-acclaimed Danish comedian, pianist and entertainer.
10. Sixteen countries vied for the 1964 Eurovision Song crown. That there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 16th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: none

No two countries tied for position. This is somewhat surprising considering the rather convoluted judging system then in use. Essentially each country had ten jurors who could each award a total of three points to one, two or three songs. The top song or songs were then awarded a total of nine points, although not necessarily equally.
