Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's early morning and the whole farm is woken up by the crowing of the "Little Red Rooster".

Answer: The Rolling Stones

"Little Red Rooster" was The Rolling Stones' second Number One hit single in Britain, reaching the top position in 1964. Written by blues legend, Willie Dixon, "Little Red Rooster" has been covered many times; The Stones version is a great take but check out Howlin' Wolf's superlative effort.
2. Farmer Giles gets himself out of bed and prepares for the first job of the day; milking. Its a tough job too, have you ever seen "The Size of a Cow"?

Answer: The Wonder Stuff

The Wonder Stuff, Pop Will Eat Itself, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin were all part of "The Stourbridge Sound". Stourbridge is a small town in West Midlands UK. "The Size of a Cow" was a Number Five hit for The Wonder Stuff in 1991. Goats Don't Shave were originally from Smethwick, just a few miles from Stourbridge.
3. A curious thing on Farmer Giles' farm is that he has huge cows but only keeps a "Little White Bull"! Perhaps he gives it stepladders?

Answer: Tommy Steele

Way back to 1959 for this one! Tommy Steele had a Number Six hit with this song from his film "Tommy the Toreador". A film about a bull that was a real 'turkey'.
4. Across the meadow now to check on the "Sheep". Farmer Giles is pleased to see his oldest ewe, Mary, has given birth.

Answer: The Housemartins

The Housemartins first hit single, "Sheep" was a minor hit in 1986, reaching Number Fifty-four. Paul Heaton once modestly suggested that his band, The Housemartins, were the fourth best band in Hull, behind Everything but the Girl, the Gargoyles and Red Guitars.

However they were the first of the four to have a Number One hit single with a cover of "Caravan of Love" in 1986. (Thanks to 50ftqueenie for info)
5. Pleased by the arrival of the lamb, Farmer Giles next checks out the goats. Yes! There certainly is a "New Kid in Town".

Answer: Eagles

"New Kid in Town" was a Number Twenty hit for the Eagles in 1977.
It's not actually about a goat!
6. His morning's work done, Farmer Giles heads back to the farmhouse for a bite to eat. What could be nicer than a couple of slices of "Cold Turkey"?

Answer: John Lennon

"Cold Turkey" was John Lennon's second solo hit after the break-up of The Beatles. It reached Number Fourteen in 1969.
7. Over lunch, Farmer Giles' wife asks him how the morning went. He is delighted to be able to tell her that "Mary Had a Little Lamb".

Answer: Wings

Paul McCartney's group Wings' took the nursery-rhyme based song "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to Number Nine in 1972.
8. Farmer Giles has just finished his lunch when there's a knock on the door; it's the mechanic from the garage and he's come to service the "Combine Harvester". OK, the full title is "Combine Harvester (Brand New Key)" but I couldn't fit it in without being too convoluted!

Answer: The Wurzels

There have been a good many 'criminal records' but this rates with the very worst of them. A buccolic take on "Brand New Key", the Wurzels' "Combine Harvester (Brand New Key)" was a parody of Melanie's song, oh how we laughed! To make matters worse it reached Number One in 1976. Time to fess-up, did YOU buy it?
9. After showing the mechanic where the machinery is, Farmer Giles heads off to feed the mares. When he gets to their paddock they are chasing each other around the field. "Crazy Horses" mutters the farmer to himself.

Answer: The Osmonds

"Crazy Horses" was a Number Two hit for the American siblings in 1972. They later scored a Number One hit with "Love Me for a Reason".
10. Tired out after a heavy day, Farmer Giles settles down for a rest, his wife has other ideas however and wants to go to the dance. the farmer agrees to go along but says he is much too tired to "Do the Funky Chicken".

Answer: Rufus Thomas

As dance crazes go "Do the Funky Chicken" never really caught on, however, it was a Number Eighteen hit for Rufus in 1970.

Hope you enjoyed yourselves down on the farm, now get out of that haystack!
