Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" - James Brown

What a great song by the "Godfather of Soul". The song was written by James Brown, Bobby Byrd and Ron Lenhoff. James Brown was also the producer. In the U.S. the song reached number two on the R&B Chart. This was the first song that featured James Brown's new band, The J.B.'s.

James Brown was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, musician, and record producer and the founder of "Funk Music", that has it origins in gospel music that originated in African-American communities.
2. "Won't Get Fooled Again" - The Who

Pete Townshend wrote the song "Won't Get Fooled Again", which was released as a single in the UK on June 25, 1971. The same song also appears on the band's 1971 album "Who's Next". The album version is 8 minutes and 32 seconds long, while the single version was edited down to 3 minutes and 35 seconds.

The song was originally created for a rock opera titled "Lifehouse", which Townshend had been developing. This project was a multimedia endeavour inspired by his devotion to the Indian spiritual figure Meher Baba, illustrating how spiritual awakening could be achieved through the interaction between the band and the audience. The opera was never completed because Townshend chose to write the band's fifth studio album instead and abandoned the project. However, the song survived and appears as the final track on the album.
3. "Walk on the Wild Side" - Lou Reed

Lou Reed was an American rock artist. He wrote and recorded the song in August 1972, and it was released on November 24, 1972. "Walk on the Wild Side" was released as an A-side track, and its flip side, "Perfect Day," was also designated an A-side. It is uncommon for singles to be issued as double A-sides.

Back in the day, the song was considered revolutionary and daring because of its lyrics and subject. It tells the story of cross-dressers who arrive in New York City and become sex workers. The phrase "Take a walk on the wild side" is used to invite potential clients. Each verse presents a different character, including Holly, Candy, Little Joe, Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jackie. All of these characters were associates of the notorious Andy Warhol Factory, as was Lou.
4. "Piano Man" - Billy Joel

Billy Joel was the singer and songwriter of the song "Piano Man". Billy released the song on November 2, 1973, on the Columbia label. This song was inspired by Joel's time performing at The Executive Room, a piano bar in Los Angeles. He spent six months working there in 1972 after his debut solo album, "Cold Spring Harbor", failed. The people mentioned in the song are based on actual individuals Joel met during his time at The Executive Room.

Because Billy needed a job to cover his expenses but couldn't use his usual name, he worked as a pianist at the Executive Room bar under the name "Bill Martin" (his full name is William Martin Joel).
5. "No Woman, No Cry" - Bob Marley and the Wailers

The song "No Woman, No Cry" was written by Bob Marley and Vincent Ford. It was released on October 25, 1974, and peaked at number 22 on the UK singles chart. In 1975, a live version of the track was recorded and released as a single, featured on the album "Live". This live performance took place at the Lyceum Theatre in London.

Apart from the Wailers, the female backing singers were performed by the I-Tshrees, consisting of Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths, and Bob Marley's wife, Rita Marley.
6. "Born to Run" - Bruce Springsteen

"Born to Run" is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on August 25, 1975, through Columbia Records. Springsteen wrote the title track specifically for a studio recording rather than a live performance. After recording four versions - including one featuring a female chorus - at the modest studio where he made his first two albums, he moved to a more advanced studio to complete it. He was determined not to release the song until it was flawless.

Bruce Springsteen released "Born to Run" as his first single. At the time of its release, it did not achieve significant success, despite frequent airplay on U.S. radio stations. On the US Billboard Hot 100, "Born to Run" peaked at number 23. Over the years, the song has become Springsteen's signature track.
7. "Play That Funky Music" - Wild Cherry

"Play That Funky Music" was released in April 1976. The song was written by Rob Parissi, who was the frontman for the band Wild Cherry. The song topped the chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 and finished at a respectable number seven on the UK Singles Chart.

Wild Cherry was formed in Mingo Junction, Ohio, in 1970 and remained active until 1979. The band released four studio albums, with their debut album, titled "Wild Cherry", reaching number five on the US Billboard 200 chart.

The 2001 Club was a regular venue for the hard rock band Wild Cherry. However, their style wasn't well appreciated because disco was so prevalent at the time. Some African Americans in the crowd shouted, "Play some funky music, white boy," following one of the band's performances. Motivated by this, Parissi decided to accept the concept and wrote the phrase on a bar pad. They later recorded the song in Cleveland, emphasising the drums and bass and adding a disco flavour.
8. "Heroes" - David Bowie

"Heroes" is a song by the English musician David Bowie from his 12th studio album of the same name, co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno. The song was released on 23 September 1977.

The story of a German couple who meet every day under a gun turret on the Berlin Wall and are devoted to one another is told in this song. During that time, Bowie lived in Berlin and was inspired by the romance between his producer, Tony Visconti, and backup singer Antonia Maass. The two would kiss "by the wall" in front of Bowie as he looked out the window of the Hansa Studio.

This song featured guitar playing by King Crimson's founder and lead guitarist, Robert Fripp. In honour of Bowie, King Crimson sang the song on September 11, 2016, at the Admiralspalast in Berlin. Later, in 2017, this performance was included on the "Heroes EP".
9. "I Will Survive" - Gloria Gaynor

"I Will Survive" is a song recorded by American singer Gloria Gaynor, released in October 1978 by Polydor Records. The song also featured on Gloria's sixth studio album, "Love Tracks", from the same year. In the charts, the song topped both the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart.

The song "I Will Survive" defeated songs like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", "Bad Girls", "Boogie Wonderland", and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" to win the 1979 Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording. The Grammy was given out in this category for the first and only occasion. Not content to stop there, Gloria Gaynor went on to win Best Roots Gospel Album in 2019 for "Testimony", which was released 40 years after her disco smash.

With translations into 20 languages, including Arabic, the song has had a much broader impact than just on the LGBT community, where it became an anthem. Not surprisingly, it continues to be one of the most well-liked karaoke tunes.
10. "Dont Stop 'Til You Get Enough" - Michael Jackson

"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is a song by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson. Written by Jackson and Greg Phillinganes, it was released by Epic Records on July 10, 1979. The song reached number one in several countries, including the United States, and peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart.

This was the second song by Michael Jackson as a solo artist to reach the number one position. His first chart-topping single was released in 1972. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was the first Michael Jackson track to prominently feature numerous screams and squeals in the vocals. He achieved great success using this vocal style on many songs from the Thriller album.
