Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this song a soldier is on the phone asking his love to come and see him one more time before he is deployed. Which last what to where is he trying to persuade his love to catch?

Answer: Last Train To Clarksville

"Last Train To Clarksville" was number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Monkees in 1966. It peaked at number 23 on the UK singles chart in 1967.

The Monkees were Mickey Dolenz (drums), born George Michael Dolenz Jr. in Los Angeles, USA, in 1945. Davy Jones (vocals), born David Thomas Jones in Manchester, UK, in 1945. He died of a heart attack due to atherosclerosis in 2012 aged 66. Mike Nesmith (guitar), born Robert Michael Nesmith in Houston, Texas, USA in 1942. Peter Tork (guitar), born Peter Halsten Thorkelson in Washington D. C., USA, in 1942.

You may have loved them or loathed them but the person to thank or blame for The Monkees is American film director/writer/producer Bob Rafelson. He had the idea for the show in 1962. It was not until after seeing The Beatles in the 1964 movie "A Hard Day's Night" and teaming up with producer Bert Schneider that the idea got off the ground. The original plan was to cast the folk/rock group The Lovin' Spoonful for the show but they had already signed a record deal with Kama Sutra records and the deal fell through.
2. This friend and collaborator of the late singers Del Shannon, Roy Orbison and George Harrison, was also the leader of his own group. Which place in the UK were the group trying to catch the last train to?

Answer: London

"Confusion"/"Last Train To London" peaked at number eight as a double A-Side on the UK singles chart for The Electric Light Orchestra in 1979. It peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980.

The Electric Light Orchestra (E. L. O.) was created by Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan who were all in a previous incarnation The Move. Jeff Lynne had joined the move in 1970 at Roy Wood's invitation on condition they would pursue Roy Wood's idea of giving a classical music sound to rock and roll.

Their first album "Electric Light Orchestra", was released in the UK in 1971 and peaked at number 32 on the UK album chart. In the US it was released as "No Answer" but did not chart. Someone at United Artists had tried to reach an E. L. O. contact in the UK for the title of the album but wrote down No Answer when they failed to get through. This was mistakenly used as the title for the album in the US. In 1972 tensions arose between Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne during the recording of their second album "Electric Light Orchestra II". Roy Wood left, taking with him Hugh McDowell (Cello) and Bill Hunt (keyboards) and formed yet another successful group Wizzard.
3. This Indian born British singer with a German sounding name had a UK number one hit with one of these records. What is the title?

His first UK chart success came after he changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck and "Release Me (And Let Me Love Again)" reached number one. It stayed there for six weeks and spent 56 weeks on the UK singles chart. It prevented "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles from reaching number one and giving them what would have been their 12th consecutive UK number one hit. This would had led to 18 consecutive UK number one hits from "From Me To You" on May 2 1963 to "Ballad Of John And Yoko" on June 11 1969. Maybe that's why Engelbert moved to California, U. S. A.
