Songs With Same Word Trivia Questions

1. 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door', was released in 1973 by which Nobel Prize winning singer/songwriter?

From Quiz
Knockin' on Heaven's Door

Answer: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan, (birth name Robert Allen Zimmerman), was born on 24th May 1941. In 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his 'poetic expression' in songwriting. The song, 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door', was written by Dylan for the soundtrack of the film 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid'. Cover versions of the song have been performed by many artists, including Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Guns N' Roses.

2. It actually did come easy for which artist, when his good friend George Harrison gave him a "practically complete" track and full writing credit for "It Don't Come Easy"?

From Quiz I Will Ease Your Mind

Answer: Ringo Starr

When Harrison gave the track to Starr it contained his "scratch track" (a recording used as a reference). Ringo's vocals were added with Harrison's backup. Recorded in 1971, this was Ringo's first big hit and would later be followed by "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen". Music critic Robert Christgau said that Ringo performed the song "as though he still couldn't quite believe his own good fortune". The song has enjoyed a great "shelf life" as Starr continues to include it in his "All Starr Band" tours and in 2020 Peter Frampton covered it as a tribute to Ringo Starr's 80th birthday.

3. Queen had a top twenty hit in 1991 with "The Show Must Go On". What inspired guitarist Brian May to write this song?

From Quiz The Show Must Go On

Answer: Freddie Mercury's failing health

Brian May wrote this song for their album "Innuendo" (1991) when he knew his friend Freddie Mercury was dying from AIDS. When the album was released Mr Mercury's condition was not public knowledge so the significance of the song was not apparent. The song tells of the imperative to continue on and make the most out of life while you are still able to enjoy it. In the 2011 documentary, Brian May explained "Freddie never moaned, he never said 'my life is [bad], this is terrible, I hate it.' He had an incredible strength and peace." This was deliberately placed as the final song on the album as it was generally thought that this would be the last album Mercury would be healthy enough to perform on before he died. However he remained well enough to record enough tracks for the posthumous album "Made In Heaven" released in 1995. And for Queen the show did go on, albeit without Freddie Mercury but the band was never the same. This question was penned into the quiz by Phoenix Rising's big disgrace, 1nn1, waving his banner all over the place.

4. Sophie B. Hawkins hit the charts all over the world in 1992 with "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover", but this success didn't translate over to the album charts. What was the name of her debut album, which included this track?

From Quiz Another Damn Quiz

Answer: Tongues And Tails

"Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" was a huge hit in 1992, from which it seemed there was no escape, and it was one of the first mainstream lesbian love songs. The album though just could not catch a break with the record buying public. Music reviewers praised the album on the whole, likening her vocals to those of Belinda Carlisle and singling out her cover of Bob Dylan's "I Want You" for special praise, but the album failed to chart anywhere, other than USA where it reached number 51 on the Billboard 200.

5. Which song, credited to Lennon and McCartney, did Peter and Gordon take to number one in both the British and US Billboard charts in 1964?

From Quiz It's a Musical World

Answer: A World Without Love

This was by far the biggest success for Peter Asher and Gordon Waller, though some of their other songs reached the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Peter is the brother of the actress and presenter Jane Asher, and became a record producer after he stopped performing. Gordon moved to the USA after the pair stopped performing together and founded a music publishing company.

6. "Come Rain Or Come Shine" was written for the 1946 musical "St. Louis Woman", which was based on which 1931 book by Arna Bontemps?

From Quiz Shining Examples Of Good Music

Answer: God Sends Sunday

Arna Bontemps was a member of the Harlem Renaissance or "New Negro Movement" of the 1920s, which also included fellow novelist James Weldon Johnson, poet Claude McKay, jazz musician Duke Ellington and dancer Josephine Baker. The musical adaptation of his novel about a jockey who squanders his prize money and is involved in a love triangle, was written by Johnny Mercer (lyrics), who also wrote the lyrics for "Moon River" (1961) and Harold Arlen (music) who composed the music for the movie, "The Wizard Of Oz" (1939).

7. The Loco-Motion just takes "a little bit of rhythm and a lot of soul". First recorded by Little Eva in 1962 and later by Kylie Minogue, which rock band recorded it in 1974?

From Quiz A Little Bit of Rhythm and a Lot of Soul

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

"Loco-Motion" was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and recorded first by Little Eva for her 1962 album "Lllloco-Motion". It did remarkably well and charted in top position on the US Billboard Hot 100, US Cash Box Top 100 as well as the Canadian and Norwegian charts. Despite being covered by artists such as The Vernons Girls and Sylvie Vartan, it would only top the charts again over a decade later when Grand Funk Railroad took their rock version from their album "Shinin' On" to top position on the US Billboard Hot 100, US Cash Box Top 100 and Canadian charts. Kylie Minogue would cover it in the late 1980s for her debut album "Kylie" and take it to the top of the Australian, Canadian, Finnish, Irish, Japanese, Peruvian and South African charts. Her version only managed a third position in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is remarkable that this song managed to reach the US top five in three different decades, by three different artists.

In the 1980s a pop version was recorded by British band Naked Eyes which went to eighth position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song has also been covered by the likes of Peggy Lee, The Carpenters and The Four Seasons.

13. Which song was a US Number Three single from Chicago's 1972 "Chicago V" album?

From Quiz Let's Go "Park"ing.

Answer: Saturday in the Park

When "Saturday in the Park" reached Number Three in the US for Chicago it became their highest charting single at the time and the biggest single hit from the "Chicago V" album. Band member Robert Lamm got the idea for the song while walking around New York City during a break from recording "Chicago V". The line in the song "Eh, Cumpari!" refers to a novelty song originally recorded by Julius LaRosa in 1953. Jill Sobule sampled the piano riff from "Saturday in the Park" for the song "Cinnamon Park" on her 2004 "Underdog Victorious" LP. "Autumn in the Park" was recorded by Suburban Legends. Beach House released "Walk in the Park" and Prince released "Paisley Park".

From Quiz Touch

Answer: U Can't Touch This

That's right it is Hammer Time, MC Hammer Time (real name Stanley Kirk Burrell). The song became Hammer's signature anthem and established MC Hammer as one of the top Rap performers of the 1990s. Unfortunately for Hammer, life after "U Can't Touch This" was not so sweet. Hammer was sued for copyright infringement by fellow rapper Rick James for "sampling" James' 1981 song "Super Freak". Hammer settled with James by giving him co-composer credit. Despite earning millions, MC Hammer was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1996.

19. In this song a soldier is on the phone asking his love to come and see him one more time before he is deployed. Which last what to where is he trying to persuade his love to catch?

From Quiz It's Time for the Last Song

Answer: Last Train To Clarksville

"Last Train To Clarksville" was number one for one week on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Monkees in 1966. It peaked at number 23 on the UK singles chart in 1967. The Monkees were Mickey Dolenz (drums), born George Michael Dolenz Jr. in Los Angeles, USA, in 1945. Davy Jones (vocals), born David Thomas Jones in Manchester, UK, in 1945. He died of a heart attack due to atherosclerosis in 2012 aged 66. Mike Nesmith (guitar), born Robert Michael Nesmith in Houston, Texas, USA in 1942. Peter Tork (guitar), born Peter Halsten Thorkelson in Washington D. C., USA, in 1942. You may have loved them or loathed them but the person to thank or blame for The Monkees is American film director/writer/producer Bob Rafelson. He had the idea for the show in 1962. It was not until after seeing The Beatles in the 1964 movie "A Hard Day's Night" and teaming up with producer Bert Schneider that the idea got off the ground. The original plan was to cast the folk/rock group The Lovin' Spoonful for the show but they had already signed a record deal with Kama Sutra records and the deal fell through.
