In 1973, Jimmy was so broke that even his dog ended up in the pound. He simply didn't have enough cash to pay his back rent and bail out his pet. Stranded in a miserable backwater tour stop in Marin County, California, he would pen a homesick love letter to his wife, Jane. Written while sitting in a lonely Los Angeles hotel room, the resulting single, "Come Monday", climbed the charts to become his first major commercial hit in 1974.
During a 1983 interview on "Late Night with David Letterman", Jimmy admitted the track literally saved his life. He told Letterman that the song's sudden success was the only reason he was finally able to pay the rent and get his dog out of the pound.
