The origin story for "Margaritaville" goes that he finished up a lightly attended Texas college tour, sat at the airport, and pinned down the basics. He completed the song after landing in Florida while he was stranded in a traffic jam on the Seven-Mile Bridge.
However, when he walked into the studio and pitched the concept - a tune inspired by losing a flip-flop and cutting his heel on a pull tab (pop top) - producer Norbert Putnam flatly replied that it was a "terrible idea for a song". Jimmy, thankfully, ignored the advice, picked up his favorite 1955 Martin D-18 acoustic guitar and recorded the classic hit that ultimately defied the critics and climbed all the way to number eight on the Billboard Hot 100.
