Per usual, Jimmy threw a massive curveball at 1970s radio. The original album version explicitly drops the line "sons of bitches," which forced a squeaky-clean radio edit that changed the words to "some bruises, some stitches." But in a hilarious twist, "American Top 40" actually played the raw, unedited version by mistake exactly once when the song debuted in October of 1977.
The track also sparked a legendary, bitter feud with David Allan Coe. Jimmy publicly called out his former buddy for completely ripping off the musical backbone of the song for Coe's own track, "Divers Do It Deeper." If you listen to them side-by-side, it is incredibly obvious - right down to an identical, tropical, acoustic introduction. The bad blood was deeply personal, too. Back in the early '70s, the guys actually crashed together at a Key West house owned by children's author Shel Silverstein - who, funny enough, was the only responsible grown-up in the entire place. When people asked Jimmy why he didn't just sue Coe, he kept it totally real: "I didn't want to give Coe the pleasure of having his name in the paper."
