Answer:

Jimmy didn't plan on making an album about a volcano. He just wanted a studio where he could sail his boat to work. It was May of 1979 and Jimmy found just what he was looking for. Sir George Martin's newly opened AIR Studios on the Caribbean island of Montserrat became the setting for "Volcano". Upon arrival they didn't have an album title or what they thought would be a hit song. One day, Coral Reefer guitarist Keith Sykes came back from a nearby volcanic hot spring strumming and singing the chorus. The rest is lava soaked history.

Jimmy summed it up pretty well in the album liner notes. "The events which took place could fill a book, and one day they just might. The whole time we were there, the volcano above the studio seemed to be waiting for us to do it justice. One day Keith Sykes came into our house strumming his little Martin, singing the chorus. I took it from there, and the gods of the volcano appeared to be satisfied."
