Lead singer Billy Mackenzie and guitarist Alan Rankine founded the post-punk and pop band The Associates in Dundee, Scotland, in 1979. Michael Dempsey (bassist) and drummer John Murphy joined the band in late 1980.
Released on February 8, 1985, on the WEA label, "Perhaps" is the third studio album by the Scottish band. The album as such could be classed as a solo album by Billy Mackenzie as founding member Alan Rankine had left the band along with bassist Michael Dempsey. As Mackenzie was now effectively a soloist, he started to work with songwriter and session musician L. Howard Hughes and Steve Reid, a punk and new wave guitarist.
Right from the start, the album "Perhaps" was a disaster at the recording stage. In fact, it was so bad the Warner Music Group more or less said it was unreleasable and needed a complete rethink. In the end, the album was rewritten from scratch. The album was originally started in 1982, but due to problems, it was shelved. The new album was recorded between 1983 and 1985 and released in 1985.
Even with the reworking of the album, "Perhaps" was a commercial flop; even though it reached number 23 on the UK Albums Chart, it only sold 40,000 copies. Three tracks from the album were released as singles: "Those First Impressions", "Breakfast" and "Waiting for the Loveboat".
The band's debut album was titled "The Affectionate Punch" (1980). This was followed by "Sulk" (1982). The last album was "Wild and Lonely", which was released in 1990. The only member of the band at this time was Billy Mackenzie, who recorded the album with session musicians. In 1993 the band did have a reunion, but it was short-lived. When Billy Mackenzie died on 22 January 1997 of an overdose, it sealed the fate of the band. Alan Rankine died on 2 January 2023 (aged 64) from heart disease.
On 3 January 2020 the band released their Super Deluxe Edition on CD. The CD had all the original songs plus some instrumentals and remastered tracks.
