'Rumours' is one of the world's highest-selling albums and has received multiple platinum certifications in several countries, as well as a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1978. Mick Fleetwood has called 'Rumours' 'the most important album we ever made' because the band were able to continue recording thanks to its success. Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks, both of whom were American, had joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 after the departure of guitarist Bob Welch; Buckingham had insisted that Nicks join with him, as they were a 'package deal'.
The production of 'Rumours' was notoriously troubled. There were two couples in the band, Buckingham and Nicks, and John and Christine McVie, who played bass and keyboards respectively (and in Christine's case, sometimes sang lead vocals). Touring had taken its toll on the McVies and they divorced. Nicks and Buckingham had a troubled relationship, which influenced several songs - 'Go Your Own Way' being a notable example - and Nicks later had an affair with Fleetwood. The band were also heavy cocaine users, to the point where Nicks suffered permanent damage to her nose.
'Second Hand News' is the first song on the album. It was written by Buckingham, who also sings lead vocals, with Nicks providing harmonies. Like many of the songs on the album, it was inspired by his relationship with Nicks. It was influenced by both Scottish and Irish folk, and disco (the rhythm was inspired by the Bee Gees' 'Jive Talkin'). Buckingham used a chair made from Naugahyde, a type of artificial leather, as a percussion instrument; he also played tom-tom on the chorus and Fleetwood's snare drum was tightened to make it sound higher.
