Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Someday We'll Be Together"

Answer: Diana Ross & The Supremes

Johnny & Jackey (Johnny Bristol and Jackey Beavers) recorded "Someday We'll Be Together" in 1961. It failed to chart.

In 1969 Bristol was asked to rework the song for Jr. Walker & the All-Stars, but Motown took it away from them and gave it to Diana Ross to be her first solo single. Then in a simple twist of fate (to introduce a Bob Dylan reference) the company decided it would be better as a final single hurrah for DR & The Supremes.

After all those machinations, the song topped the charts in the USA and was a number 13 in the UK and number four in Canada.

In 1970 "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)" became Ross's first solo single.
2. "I'm Gonna Make You Mine"

Answer: Lou Christie

In 1969, "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" reached number 12 on the Hot 100 in the USA and number two in the UK. It was a number five in Canada and a number 28 in Australia.

Christie had three US top ten hits in the 1960s, including one at number one.
3. "Calendar Girl"

Answer: Neil Sedaka

Neil Sedaka wrote "Calendar Girl" with Howard Greenfield and it reached number four on the Hot 100, number eight in the UK and topped the charts in Canada.
4. "California Soul"

Answer: Marlena Shaw

"California Soul" was written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson and its first release was as a B side by The Messengers in 1967. Several others covered the song before Marlena Shaw put it on an album in 1969. The 5th Dimension reached number 25 on the pop singles chart.
5. "A Must To Avoid"

Answer: Herman's Hermits

"A Must To Avoid" was written specifically for a 1966 movie starring Herman's Hermits.

The single reached number eight in the US and number six in the UK, while topping the charts in New Zealand. It reached number three in Canada.
6. "Am I The Same Girl"

Answer: Barbara Acklin

In 1969, "Am I The Same Girl" topped out at number 33 on the US R&B charts and as a number 52 in Canada.

For some reason, in 1968 Acklin's vocal was stripped off the recording and replaced with a piano piece. As "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited it topped the Canadian charts and was a number three on the Hot 100.
In 1992, Swing Out Sister recorded a cover and it went to number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and was also a number one on the European Dance Radio chart.
7. "Mrs. Robinson"

Answer: Simon & Garfunkel

Originally Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel were set to sing "here's to you Mrs Roosevelt" for a US First Lady, but changed it to "here's to you Mrs Robinson". The song also name-checked several American heroes of the time.

It was written for the 1968 movie "The Graduate" and topped the Billboard Hot 100, and the Canadian RPM charts, while reaching number four in the UK.

Simon & Garfunkel first performed as the duo "Tom and Jerry", a fact this quiz author was able to contribute to a recent table quiz, but sadly our team finished fourth.
8. "Let The Heartaches Begin"

Answer: Long John Baldry

In 1967, "Let The Heartaches Begin" was a UK number one.

Long John Baldry got his name from his height. At 6' 7", Baldry was the tallest artist to have a UK number one until 6' 9" Christano Spiller topped the chart in 2000 with "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)."

This was Baldry's best performance out of four singles that reached the UK charts.

Baldry moved to Los Angles and later to Canada, where he became a Canadian citizen. He settled in Vancouver, British Columbia, but spoke highly of Alberta. (I may have made that bit up.)
9. "Lady Madonna"

Answer: The Beatles

Paul McCartney was the main writer of "Lady Madonna" which topped the charts in seven territories in 1967.

Macca later said his inspiration was a photograph in 'National Geographic' in 1965 of a woman breastfeeding her child.

"She looked very proud and she had a baby ... And I saw that as a kind of Madonna thing, mother and child," McCartney told 'The Guardian' in 2017.
10. "Dance On"

Answer: The Shadows

The instrumental "Dance On" topped the UK charts in 1963. It was also a number one in Ireland.

The single was released without oft-times singer Cliff Richard. Lead guitar was played by Hank Marvin who, many people believe, has never been given the recognition he deserved. He certainly inspired a host of guitarists.
Tony Iommi, George Harrison, Brian May and Mark Knopfler all spoke highly of Marvin.
11. "Return To Sender"

Answer: Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley was a hugely influential singer and inspired many to get into the music business. But was his music original? It has been estimated that up to 500 of the 700 songs he recorded were covers of earlier songs.

The 'Elvis History Blog' notes: "Almost all of the two dozen songs he recorded at Sun Records in 1954-55 were covers. And, like most new artists in the fifties, he used multiple covers to fill his LPs when he moved to RCA in 1956. Of the 24 songs on his first two albums for RCA that year, 20 were covers."

"Return To Sender" was an exception. It was written for The King by Winfield Scott and Otis Blackwell specifically for the 1962 movie "Girls! Girls! Girls!".
The single topped the UK charts and was a number two in the USA. It was also a number two in Canada.
12. "Forget Me Not"

Answer: Eden Kane

Eden Kane - born Richard Graham Sarstedt - was something of a teen singing sensation in the UK in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

"Forget Me Not" was his third successive UK top ten hit, making number three.
After a successful run in the 1960s, Kane's star waned and he moved to LOs Angeles to work as a producer and songwriter. He also wrote and released "A Little Bit of Rock n Roll" in July 2025, 64 years after his first release.
13. "That's What Love Will Do"

Answer: Joe Brown And The Bruvvers

In 1963, "That's What Love Will Do" was a UK number three for Joe Brown And The Bruvvers.

UK people may be interested to learn the song was written by Trevor Peacock who many years later played Jim Trott on "The Vicar of Dibley" - No, no, no, no, no... yes!

US people may be unfamiliar with the word 'bruvver', it is slang literally for brother, but also used for a close friend. (Americans might say "bro" instead.)
14. "Hey Baby"

Answer: Bruce Channel

In 1962, "Hey Baby" topped the US charts for Bruce Channel - he also co-wrote the song. It was a number two in the UK and also a number one in New Zealand.

Channel did not release the song in Canada, but Anne Murray did, taking it to number one on the RPM charts.
15. "I Can't Let Go"

Answer: The Hollies

"I Can't Let Go" was a UK number two and US number 42 for The Hollies in 1966.

Evie Sands had released a single a year earlier, but it failed to chart.
