Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Yeah da girls are out to Bingo and the boys are gettin' stinko, we think no more of Inco, on a ________ Saturday night"

Answer: Sudbury

"Sudbury Saturday Night" is a song about the hard-drinking miners working for Inco, the large nickel mine, in Sudbury, Ontario, in 1967. Tom wrote the song when he was booked for a three-week performance at the Towne House in Sudbury and it was released on his album "The Northland's Own".
2. "_________ (_________). My back still aches when I hear that word!"

Answer: Tillsonburg

"Tillsonburg" was released in 1971 on the album "My Stompin' Grounds". It pays homage to the small town of Tillsonburg, Ontario, and its tobacco farming industry. The song resonates with many for its authentic portrayal of the back-breaking struggles and camaraderie experienced by tobacco pickers.
3. "Nineteen scarlet roses the chaplain spread around, in the waters of Burrard Inlet in old _______ town. When the bridge came tumbling down."

Answer: Vancouver

In June 1958 a bridge was under construction across Burrard Inlet in Vancouver. High winds caused it to collapse and it killed 19 men. Tom wrote this song in honour of them. As he sings at the end of the song "Now if you're ever crossing, this mighty bridge sublime, and nineteen scarlet roses, pass before your mind. Remember and be kind.

The bridge came tumbling down. And nineteen men were drowned, so you could ride to the other side, of old Vancouver town".
4. "There was a guy from P.E.I. they used to call "Potato". He met this young ________, Ontario tomato."

Answer: Leamington

Leamington, Ontario was home to many tomato farmers in the 1970s for a large local Heinz ketchup factory. According to Tom the "Ketchup Song" was written after he was approached by a policeman when he was hitchhiking through Leamington, Ontario, and was told to write "a nice loveable song about our nice loveable town of Leamington". Tom said the policeman had two belts on, one around his waist and one going from his waist to the shoulder.

Despite the song reaching number one in Canada in 1970, Heinz refused Tom's offer for Heinz to use it to advertise their product. "Ketchup Song" appears on Tom Connors' "Sings Bud The Spud And Other Favourites" album.
5. "You might think it's goofy, but the Man in the Moon is a _______."

Answer: Newfie

"Moon-Man Newfie" was another Canada number one hit for Tom Connors. It was released in 1972 on the album "Love & Laughter". The song tells the amusing tale of a Newfoundlander who travels to the moon, adding a playful narrative to Connors' extensive collection of songs celebrating Canadian locals and characters.
6. "_-_-_-_-_-_-_, that's gonna be my new address cause I just got a new job working in the mine, Hollinger Mine."

Answer: Timmins

Tom Connors wrote this song, "Carolyne", about a girl in the town where he got his first break in music, Timmins Ontario. It appears on his first album, "The Northland's Own" in 1969.
7. "It's Bud the Spud! From the bright red mud, rollin' down the hiway smilin'. The spuds are big on the back of Bud's rig, they're from _______"

Answer: Prince Edward Island

Tom Connors was born in Prince Edward Island, where the mud is red and potatoes are the largest food export. "Bud the Spud" was released in 1969 on his third album, "Sings Bud The Spud And Other Favourites", and was written about his truck-driving friend, Bud Roberts.
8. "LOST! Up in no-mans land of the _______ ________. They were lost! Up in no-mans land The Martin Hartwell Story."

Answer: Northwest Territories

The song "Marten Hartwell Story" tells the true story of a pilot named Marten Hartwell who survived 31 days in the Arctic after a plane crash. The story was inspired by the real-life events of the Hartwell crash, which occurred in November 1972. The pilot, Marten Hartwell, was tasked with flying a Federal nurse and two Inuit individuals to Yellowknife, but the plane crashed near Hottah Lake, Northwest Territories.

The song was released a year later (1973) on his album "To It And At It". A "must" for those who like ballads of Canadian history.
9. "Hey-Hi, Hey-Hi-Ho, the best man in _______ was Mufferaw Joe!"

Answer: Ottawa

Joseph "Jos" Montferrand (October 25, 1802 - October 4, 1864) was a French-Canadian logger, strongman, and folk hero of the working man and was the inspiration for the legendary Ottawa Valley figure "Big Joe Mufferaw". The name Mufferaw is believed to be a result of English speakers mispronouncing "Montferrand" phonetically.

He was already a legitimate folk hero in his own time, but his reputation grew into the mythical hero when exaggerated tales were told about him. The song was released in 1970 on his album "Meets Big Joe Mufferaw".
10. "Now the final flick, of a hockey stick and the one gigantic scream. "The puck is in! The ______ team wins!", the good ol' hockey game."

Answer: home

First recorded in 1972 on the album "Stompin' Tom And The Hockey Song", in the song's chorus, Connors sings, "The good old hockey game is the best game you can name, and the best game you can name is the good old hockey game.". It is now played in professional and amateur hockey arenas around the world.
