Answer: Come Away With Me

The "Come Away With Me" album was nothing short of landmark, catapulting Norah Jones to the top of the charts in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and most of Europe, popularizing a wave of acoustic pop tracks at the start of the 2000s. When the album released to great fanfare, its diamond-level sales made Jones the creator of the highest-selling debut album of the 21st century. The only artists to overtake her sales numbers in the coming decades were Eminem (with "The Eminem Show") and Adele (with "21").

While Jones' album would lead with the track "Don't Know Why" (which won three Grammy Awards itself), "Come Away With Me" would become the album's third single and go double-platinum on its own merit.

Answer: Whistlin' Past The Graveyard

Always the experimentalist, the gravelly-voiced Tom Waits would always have a defined sound, regardless of which music genre he decided to dip his toes into. Starting with his debut in 1973, Waits would release an album nearly every year of the decade, hitting 1978 with "Blue Valentine", his first to chart in Australia after only finding more significant sales in the U.S. Interestingly, the album would go gold in the UK despite not charting there.

A deeper cut, "Whistlin' Past The Graveyard" never really saw much lasting success for Waits, even in live settings. It would, however, get re-released as part of the 2001 compilation album "Used Songs 1973-1980", which chronicled a series of tracks he released under the Asylum Records label for his first seven albums.

Answer: Animal I Have Become

While all four of these tracks charted for the five-piece Toronto band, "Animal I Have Become" managed to top the success of their earlier debut track "I Hate Everything About You", which released to the airwaves three years earlier and catapulted the band to the top of the charts in Canada. Being radio-friendly hard rock, they had little trouble crossing the border; their second album, "One-X", went triple-platinum in the U.S. and hit number five on the Billboard 200. It's a number they would top in 2009 with their next album, "Life Starts Now".

"Animal I Have Become" has had significant staying power as a hard rock classic, managing to return to the charts in 2024 on Billboard's streaming listings.

Triviaballer seemed in the mood for those heavy guitar riffs, at least enough to add this song to our list.

Answer: Any Colour You Like

One of the best-selling records of all time, there's a lot to be said about Pink Floyd's eighth album, "The Dark Side of the Moon", which is seen by many as their magnum opus (despite the band following it up with "Wish You Were Here", "Animals", and "The Wall"). The record commenced with the instrumental "Speak to Me"; a second, "On the Run", appeared after the first track with vocals ("Breathe (In the Air)"); the third was "Any Colour You Like", on Side B between "Us and Them" and "Brain Damage". A psychedelic track taking advantage of what was, then, groundbreaking synthesizer technology, it would be played at live shows in an extended form, sometimes lasting five times longer than the recorded version and adding solos and scat vocal sections.

Answer: Bad Habits

Ed Sheeran continued his streak of popular pop songwriting into the 2020s already the accomplished musician. Having claimed a number of Grammy Awards and collaborated with some of the industry's top forces, he went a bit more experimental with "=". "Bad Habits" turned out to be the the album's first single, releasing in June 2021, and it would get a Song of the Year nomination at the Grammy Awards, topping the UK Singles Chart and reaching number two on the Billboard 200.

The dance-pop stylings of "Bad Habits", taking a slightly different direction and tone from Sheeran's earlier "Shape of You", would be followed up by "Shivers", which saw very similar trajectory and success.

Answer: Start of Something Beautiful

Though the Steven Wilson-fronted Porcupine Tree made music throughout the late-1980s and 1990s, it was their eighth album, "Deadwing", filled with intentional and varied tracks, that sold the most thus far, indicating a continued rise in popularity for the ambitious progressive rockers. Written in conjunction with a movie script created by Wilson in the same era, "Deadwing" was meant to score what he claimed to be a Lynchian ghost story. "Start of Something Beautiful", which actually comes late in the track list, runs at a unique time signature with acoustic elements that lead into a heavier, more sweeping bridge.

"Start of Something Beautiful" would also appear on the band's "Rockpalast" and "Arriving Somewhere..." live releases and be remastered, with the rest of the "Deadwing" album, in 2018.

Answer: Shark Smile

The second single of the indie-folk band's second album, 2017's "Capacity", "Shark Smile" has all the atmosphere of a Bruce Springsteen road song, describing the metaphor-laden story of a woman named Evelyn who, perhaps inadvertently, is the cause of a car crash as a van drives over the double line and off the road. Though the song is wistful, it comes across almost casually through singer/writer Adrianne Lenker's storytelling and cadence.

While "Shark Smile" failed to chart, the "Capacity" album was regarded by many American outlets as one of the best releases of 2017. Their next album, "U.F.O.F.", would start garnering the band Grammy nominations.

Almost road-trip-ready, this song was brought to the setlist by 1nn1.

Answer: Drive By

After Train re-staked their claim to the pop airwaves with the ubiquitous adult alternative radio track "Hey, Soul Sister" in 2009, the trio would follow up their "Save Me, San Francisco" album with 2012's "California 37", which brought a series of new earworms to listeners starting with the lead single "Drive By". Though this song hit number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, it managed to top the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and reach number six on the UK Singles Chart, going multi-platinum in both countries.

Answer: Spellbound

Showcasing the Canadiana rock that the Sam Roberts Band has become known for over decades of albums, the band's seventh album (and fourth under that name) released near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, made for easy listening under quarantine. "Spellbound" is perhaps one of its more wistful songs, especially when performed on just an acoustic guitar.

"All of Us", the album "Spellbound" was featured on, was nominated for the Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year, losing to JJ Wilde's "Ruthless". Sam Roberts had previously won the award in 2003 and 2009.

Answer: Catch a Falling Star

Although all of these songs won this particular award, it was Perry Como's rendition of "Catch a Falling Star" that took the statuette when it was first distributed in 1959. The song had earlier released in 1957, becoming Como's final number one hit on the U.S. song chart. It would be a bit disingenuous to claim he stopped having hit singles, however. After 1961, Como's tracks would become fixtures on the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, hitting number one on that chart another three times.

Como passed away in 2001 and was a posthumous recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award the following year.
