8. Known for being the patron saint of another terrible illness, who is also the patron saint of Hawaii and those suffering from AIDS?

Answer: Father Damien

Born Josef De Veuster, Father Damien (1840-1889) was a Belgian Catholic priest who spent many years of his life working in Hawaii with people suffering from the disease of leprosy. These sad souls had been isolated by their government from the rest of society and forced to live as outcasts on the separate island of Moloka'i. Father Damien cared for them himself, treated their wounds and sores, shared their food, made their coffins and buried those who died, created and maintained law and order, and helped organise hospitals, farms, schools, churches, roads and homes. Finally, this saint of a man, who gave life back to those who had been robbed of all dignity, succumbed to this terrible illness himself. Father Damien was canonised by the Roman Catholic church on 11 October, 2009.

His Feast Day is 10 May.
