Back in 1907, Alabama played Auburn on a muddy field. The red Alabama clay made their uniforms look crimson and a sports reporter called them the Crimson Tide. The name stuck and cheerleaders were chanting "Roll Tide" to the crowd. "Roll tide" is so synonymous with Alabama that fans will greet each with the phrase as often as they say hello or goodbye.

Paul "Bear" Bryant is widely considered one of the all-time greatest coaches in NCAA football history. During his coaching career with the Crimson Tide, they won six national championships.
