Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alabama has never beaten Notre Dame?

Answer: False

In the 1986 season after several meetings between these two schools, Alabama finally triumphed over a Steve Buerlien led Fighting Irish team 28-10. Cornelius Bennett sacked Buerlien, and that was the story of the game; The Irish on the turf of Legion Field. The Crimson Tide ended the year 10-3 with a win over Washington in the Sun Bowl.
2. What bowl was Coach Paul Bear Bryant's final bowl appearance?

Answer: Liberty

"Bear" coached his final 323rd victory in the 1982 Liberty Bowl, defeating Big 10 foe Illinois 21-15. That gave Bear the record of 323 victories that stood for almost 20 years! Although Eddie Robinson set a record for most wins by a collegiate coach with over 450 wins.
3. Alabama's first bowl victory in on January 1st 1926 was quite a feat in many eyes. Can you name that Bowl?

Answer: Rose Bowl

Alabama defeated PAC-10 powerhouse Washington 20-19 in a star studded game. The Tide rolled into the National scene, with its first undefeated season and first National Title.
4. What words are missing in the "Rammer Jammer ________ give them Hell Alabama" chant?

Answer: Yellow Hammer

This chant includes the State Bird of Alabama, and is frequently used during all sporting events.
5. How many times did Alabama beat the University of Texas Longhorns in the 20th century?

Answer: 0

The Tide never had the pleasure of handing the Longhorns a loss. Although coming very close in the 1982 Cotton Bowl, the Tide fell short losing 14-9, after leading 7-0 going into the fourth quarter. That game made Coach Bryant 1-6 against the 'Horns.
6. In what year was the term "elephant" used, to describe the Tide's varsity squad first used?

Answer: 1930

In 1930, a writer for the Atlanta Journal wrote, "At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity".
7. "Go teach those Bulldogs to ______"?

Answer: behave

Speaking of the Georgia Bulldogs here, the next line reads, "Send those Yellow Jackets to a watery grave". Apparently the Tide's students didn't like the state of Georgia.
8. In the 1992 Sugar Bowl, George Teague ran down what most considered the fastest man in America. Who was he, and what was his number?

Answer: Lamar Thomas #36

Lamar Thomas was number 36 for the Miami Hurricanes, and he was the so-called fastest man in America. Teague made him look like cold molasses, running him down from almost 25 yards behind.
9. What win against an Ivy League School put the Univ. of Alabama on the College Football map?

Answer: Pennsylvania

The Tide was put on the national map with this victory over Penn., winning the game 9-7. The following year, Wade Wallace was named head coach and the Tide turned to tradition!
10. Alabama's rivalry with Auburn was the longest running rivalry in the south in the 20th century?

Answer: False

The longest running rivalry in the south does include those Auburn Tigers. The Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn have been playing throughout the century, and had the "Iron Bowl" not been put on hold because of several differences between the Universities, it would tie the rivalry.
