Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Fame pitcher, who set a career record for giving up the most home runs in a career, died in 2010?

Answer: Robin Roberts

Roberts pitched for 19 seasons and retired in 1966 with his record of dishing up 505 home runs. He died in May of 2010. Robin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976. Jamie Moyer, ironically of the Phillies in 2010, dished up his 506th home run pitch the following month to break Robin's record.
2. Who was the first player in history to hit more than 20 home runs for two different teams in the same season?

Answer: Mark McGwire

In 1997, the Athletics traded Mark mid-season to the Cardinals after hitting 34 home runs in the season. As a Cardinal, he finished the season out with 24 more home runs for St. Louis. Although he hit 58 total big ones, he did not win a home run crown in the season. The others listed were all one-team players.
3. Which of these Hall of Fame pitching greats played in more seasons in their career?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Spalding pitched in only six seasons plus four games in his career from 1871-1877. He went 252-65. Koufax was forced to retire in 1966 due to elbow problems with a 165-87 record after 12 seasons. Lemon was an Indian pitcher in the 1940s and 1950s over 13 seasons. Ryan more than doubled the others and spent 27 seasons with four teams, retiring in 1993.
4. Which of these players did not hit an All-Star Game lead-off home run?

Answer: Lou Johnson

Boudreau of the Indians was the first to ever accomplish this in 1942. His lead-off home run came off Cardinal pitcher Mort Cooper. Mays was next when his 1965 shot came off Oriole pitcher Milt Pappas. The Reds' Morgan hit his in 1977 against Jim Palmer of the Orioles. Johnson, who played in the 1960s, never went to an All-Star Game.
5. Some baseball fans may know that Yankee Lou Gehrig was the first player in Major League history to have his jersey number retired by a team. Who was the next Major League player to have his number retired?

Answer: Carl Hubbell

Gehrig's number 4 was retired on July 4, 1939. Hubbell was a career Giant for 16 seasons. His jersey number 11 was retired in 1944. Carl won two National League MVPs and had a 253-154 record.
6. Which Major League team was accused of throwing a World Series, so players could get out of their contracts to sign with a different league in the 1910s?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The other teams did not exist in the 1910s. In 1914, the American and National Leagues saw the emergence of the new Federal League, and the league was offering big contracts to those who defected to their league. The Athletics made their fourth World Series appearance in five seasons in 1914, and were more than heavily favored to defeat the Boston Braves.

Many Athletics players said that if they played bad enough for Connie Mack in the series, he would let them out of their contract to sign with the new league.

The Braves won the series four games to none. While there was no official investigation of throwing the World Series, history has always wondered. After the 1914 season, Mack let numerous players out of their contracts, and the Athletics dynasty was over.

In 1915, the team went 43-109.
7. This player was the first in Major League slugger in history to hit four home runs in a four-game World Series. Who is this Hall of Fame player?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

It was the 1928 World Series that pitted the Yankees against the Cardinals. It was also the season when Babe Ruth had his fourth season of 50+ home runs with 54. While Gehrig hit 27 in the season, he came up big in the World Series with a home run in game two, two in game three, then another in game four. Ruth had three home runs in that series, and hit all three in game four in the Yankees' four games to none win.

The Babe did hit four home runs in a World Series in 1926 against the Cardinals, but it was a seven-game series that saw the Cardinals put the Yankees in their place, four games to three.
8. The great Babe Ruth played for 22 seasons in his career and retired in 1935. How many All-Star Game home runs did the Babe hit during his career?

Answer: 1

The first All-Star Game wasn't played until 1933. The aging Babe made his mark in the inaugural game with a home run, but couldn't get a hit in 1934. He played in only those two All-Star games, and retired as a Boston Brave before the All-Star break in 1935.
9. After 21 loyal seasons with the Giants, Willie Mays was traded to the New York Mets in mid-season 1972 for which player?

Answer: Charlie Williams

The Mets paid cash and gave the Giants pitcher Charlie Williams who was a rookie in 1971 with the Mets. He hadn't even appeared in a 1972 season game when the Mets threw him into the deal to get Mays. Willie hit his final 14 of 660 home runs in a Mets uniform, and Williams went on to pitch in seven seasons with the Giants. Williams went 23-22 with four saves in San Francisco.
10. In the first decade of the 21st Century, only one relief pitcher won the Cy Young Award. Which Dodger was this?

Answer: Eric Gagne

Gagne went 2-3 with 55 saves in the 2003 season, setting records for consecutive saves. His ERA was an amazing 1.20. Eric won the Cy Young over Jason Schmidt of the Giants, and Mark Prior of the Cubs.
