Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did Germany's Hans Heyer drive his way into Formula One infamy?

Answer: 1977

Heyer failed to qualify for the 1977 German Grand Prix, but he managed to get his ATS onto the track and compete anyway as the illegal 25th entry. He eventually retired nine laps into the race with a gear linkage problem. He was the 100th driver to be profiled on a site called f1rejects.com (where, with Wikipedia, I get my information for this and other quizzes). F1rejects.com is a site devoted to the worst of F1.
2. David Kennedy holds the record for most DNQs without ever starting a race.

Answer: False

While the Irishman failed to prequalify seven times for Shadow Racing in 1980, the record goes to Italy's Claudio Langes, who went 0-for-14. Langes raced for Eurobrun in 1990, a subpar team who failed to make 55 events in 76 attempts from 1988-1990.
3. Taki Inoue was part of the pay-driver craze of 1994 and 1995. His career was bizarre, including two incidents where he was hit by safety cars. How many races did Inoue compete in?

Answer: 18

Inoue drove for Simtek in 1994 at Suzuka and 17 races for Arrows in 1995. The Japanese driver was hit by the safety car in Monaco and the marshals' car in Hungary.
4. Al Pease earned F1 notoriety by finishing a 1967 race 43 laps behind the winner. In what country was this race held?

Answer: Canada

The English-born driver ran the Canadian Grand Prix in 1967, 1968, and 1969. Pease would later have the distinction of being the first driver to be disqualified from an F1 race for going too slow.
5. After a stint as the drummer for ABBA, Sweden's Slim Borgudd drove for ATS in 1981 and Tyrrell in 1982. What was his best career finish?

Answer: Sixth

Borgudd took sixth in 1981 at Britain. After the breakup of ABBA, Borgudd continued to pursue a racing career. He would eventually succeed in truck racing.
6. Pierre-Henri Raphanel attempted sixteen races with three awful teams. What team gave him his only F1 start?

Answer: Coloni

The French driver had his only successful attempt at Monaco in 1989 for Coloni. He would only complete 19 laps.
7. What Italian driver had this "impressive" resume: Simtek in 1994 (DNQ'd at only attempt in Barcelona), Pacific in 1995 (17 successful attempts), Forti in 1996 (five DNQs in 10 races)?

Answer: Andrea Montermini

Montermini, a former test driver for Ferrari, got his start under the most tragic of circumstances. At Spain, he replaced Roland Ratzenberger, who died at Imola two races before. Montermini was injured while qualifying. David Brabham drove one Simtek car that made every race that season, while the other changed drivers often. Simtek, Pacific, and Forti are regarded as three of the worst teams of the mid-1990s.
8. Joachim Winkelhock was excellent in touring cars, but his F1 career was dismal. With what team did Winkelhock attempt, and fail to make, seven races in 1989?

Answer: AGS

Joachim's nephew Marcus led in his F1 debut at the 2007 European Grand Prix in a Spyker Ferrari. Joachim won the 1988 German F3 Championship, 1993 British Touring Car Championship, and the 1999 24 Hours of LeMans.
9. Where was the only attempt for the Mastercard/Lola team?

Answer: Australia

The 1997 one-off effort by Eric Broadley netted unprepared cars that had never seen a wind tunnel 13 seconds off the pace. Italy's Vincenzo Sospiri unsuccessfully attempted his only F1 race. The other driver, Brazilian Ricardo Rosset, DNQ'd his only F1 race that season. He raced for Footwork in 1996 and Tyrrell in 1998.
10. With what team did French driver Olivier Grouillard score his only career World Championship point?

Answer: Ligier

Grouillard scored a sixth place finish in the 1989 French Grand Prix. In a four-year career (1989-1992) that included 21 DNQs in 62 races, Grouillard drove for five teams.
