Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Roberto Clemente died in a tragic airplane crash Dec. 31, 1972, while attempting to bring aide to earthquake victims in Managua. Which of his teammates was supposed to go with him, but didn't make it to the airport? (Hint: this teammate later replaced Clemente in right field.)

Answer: Manny Sanguillen

Sanguillen could not find his car keys and missed the flight. The Pirates, in an attempt to prolong his career, moved Sanguillen from catcher to Clemente's right field position.
2. Which of these Major League Baseball Hall of Famers did not also play basketball for the Harlem Globetrotters?

Answer: Dave Winfield

Dave Winfield was drafted by both the NBA (Atlanta Hawks) and ABA (Utah Stars), but did not play pro basketball or for the Harlem Globetrotters. He made the Hall of Fame as an outfielder for the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, California Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and Cleveland Indians.
3. On May 26, 1959, Pittsburgh Pirate left-hander Harvey Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves before it was spoiled in the 13th by an error. After an intentional walk to Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock hit one out of the park to end the game. What was the final score?

Answer: 1-0

Hank Aaron thought Adcock's "homer" bounced over the fence and was a ground-rule double, so after the lead runner scored, he thought the game was over and he headed off the field. When Adcock passed him, Adcock was out and the game was considered over at 1-0.
4. Which of these New York Yankees was known as "Babe Ruth's legs"?

Answer: Sammy Byrd

The rules in Ruth's era allowed the player hitting a homer to give way to a substitute runner to complete the circuit of the bases without the hitter having to leave the game. Byrd was a back-up outfielder and had the job of finishing the running on Ruth's home runs.
5. In 1961, Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hit 61 home runs to break Babe Ruth's long-standing one-season mark of 60. He had to beat out teammate Mickey Mantle who had 54. How many intentional walks did Maris receive on his way to hitting 61?

Answer: 0

With Mickey Mantle virtually always hitting behind Maris, nobody walked Maris intentionally. Mantle had 54 home runs despite being injured late in the year.
6. Which former Major League Baseball player had hits for two different teams in two different cities on the same day?

Answer: Joel Youngblood

Youngblood got the game-winning hit off Ferguson Jenkins for the Mets at Wrigley Field during a day game August 4, 1982. He was traded to the Expos, got on a plane and flew to Philadelphia, where he singled off Steve Carlton. Heathcote and Flack played for the Cardinals and Cubs, respectively, in 1922. Between games of a doubleheader between the two teams, they were traded for one another, but did not get hits for both teams.
7. New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio hit safety in 56 consecutive games from May 15 through July 16, 1941. The next day, Cleveland Indians third baseman Ken Keltner made two great defensive plays to rob DiMaggio of potential hits. After that game, DiMaggio went on another smaller hitting streak. How many games was this second streak?

Answer: 17

DiMaggio finished the 1941 season with a .357 average, 30 homers and 125 runs batted in, which was a fairly average season for him in his prime. He was the league MVP and the Yankees won the World Series.
8. All these Hall of Fame players went to the Major Leagues without ever having played Minor League Baseball except one. Who is he?

Answer: Robin Yount

Yount played one season of Minor League Baseball in 64 games with Newark in the New York-Penn short season league at age 17. He joined the Milwaukee Brewers at age 18 the next spring.
9. Which former Major League player died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 53, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease on September 9, 1999?

Answer: Catfish Hunter

Hall of Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter pitched for the A's and Yankees, and died of ALS.
10. Many Major League players have participated in the College World Series. Each of the following Major League players won a College World Series MVP Award for his outstanding pitching except one. Who is he?

Answer: Roger Clemens

Schiraldi and Clemens were teammates for the University of Texas. Schiraldi won the award in 1983 over Clemens, who pitched and won the final game. Street won the award for Texas in 2002. Winfield, of the University of Minnesota, pitched well, throwing a 14-strikeout shutout in the opening game.

In his second outing, he had 15 Ks through 8 innings against eventual champ USC until a controversial call and bad relief pitching allowed USC to erase a 7-0 deficit and win, 8-7. Winfield also played basketball in college and in 1972 played in the NCAA tournament.
