Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. West Bromwich Albion won their only top-flight title of the 20th century in which season?

Answer: 1919-20

West Bromwich Albion finished the 1919-20 season 11 points ahead of runners-up Burnley to win their only top-flight title. Their 104 goals scored was the most in league history up until that date. The Baggies were runners-up in 1925 and 1954 - on the latter occasion they finished four points behind local rival Wolverhampton Wanderers, but would lift the F.A. Cup, defeating Preston North End in the final.
2. Who was manager of Aston Villa when they won the European Cup in 1982?

Answer: Tony Barton

Ron Saunders led Aston Villa to the league title in 1980-81, and was still in charge when they reached the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup the following season. However, a disagreement with the club's chairman over his contract led to Saunders resigning in February 1982.

His assistant, Tony Barton, was announced as his replacement in the manager's seat, and he would lead them to victory over Bayern Munich in the European Cup final in May of that year.
3. Chesterfield F.C. has what unusual nickname?

Answer: The Spireites

Chesterfield F.C. were founded in 1867 in Derbyshire. Their nickname of Spireites comes from a local landmark, the crooked spire of the Church of St Mary and All Saints. There are numerous theories and legends as to how the spire got twisted, the more interesting (and unlikely) ones often involving the devil.
4. Stoke City won their only major trophy of the 20th century when they defeated which team in the League Cup final of 1972?

Answer: Chelsea

Founded in 1863, Stoke are one of the oldest soccer teams in England and were one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888. They had to wait until season 1971-72 before they finally got their hands on some major silverware. In that season's League Cup, they defeated Southport, Oxford United, Manchester United, Bristol Rovers and West Ham United to set up a final date with Chelsea at Wembley. Terry Conroy and George Eastham were their goalscorers in a 2-1 victory.
5. Northampton Town moved to the Sixfields Stadium in 1994 after having spent the previous 97 years groundsharing with a team in which sport?

Answer: Cricket

Northampton Town shared the County Ground with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club from 1897 until 1994. Due to the size of the cricket pitch, the stadium was a three-sided affair. Northampton eventually acquired their own, four-sided, stadium in 1994, named after the Sixfields area of the town where it was built.
6. Coventry City won their first major honour in 1987 when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the F.A. Cup final. Which Spurs player had the misfortune to score an own-goal to clinch the trophy for Coventry?

Answer: Gary Mabbutt

Coventry City went on a terrific F.A. Cup run in season 1986-87, eliminating Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United, Stoke City, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United to set up a final against Tottenham at Wembley. In one of the most memorable finals of the later 20th century, Coventry prevailed 3-2 after extra-time, with Gary Mabbutt being the unfortunate Spurs player who put through his own goal for the decisive counter.

Answer: Juventus

Notts County were founded in 1862 and were founding members of the Football League in 1888. Juventus F.C., the most successful club in Italy, were formed in Turin in 1897. One of their players, who was from Nottingham, provided the club with County's black-and-white striped shirts in 1901, and they have worn those colours ever since.

When Juventus moved into their new stadium in 2011, they invited Notts County to play in the official opening game, and County managed to spoil the party with a very creditable 1-1 draw.
8. What was the name of Birmingham City F.C. when they were founded in 1875?

Answer: Small Heath Alliance

Birmingham City were founded in 1875 under the name of Small Heath Alliance, after the district of Birmingham where they were based. Nicknamed The Blues, City were winners of the League Cup in 1963 and 2011.

10. Leicester City were the surprise champions of England in 2015-16. Whose 24 goals played a major part in their title success?

Answer: Jamie Vardy

Leicester City were 5000-1 rank outsiders with UK bookmakers prior to the 2015-16 season, but defied the odds to win the top flight of English football for the first time in their history. Answer: Malmo F.F.

12. Port Vale F.C. are based in which town in the Potteries area of Staffordshire?

Answer: Burslem

Port Vale F.C. play their homes games at Vale Park in Burlsem, part of the Stoke-on-Trent conurbation. Founded in 1876, they took their name from the "valley of ports" along the Trent & Mersey Canal which runs through the town.

This was a short-lived competition, involving clubs from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland who had not qualified for European competition. Derby defeated Airdrieonians of Scotland in a two-legged final.
14. What is the nickname of Mansfield Town F.C,?

Answer: The Stags

Mansfield Town were founded in Nottinghamshire in 1897. They have spent most of their league career in the lower divisions, with a one-off season in the second tier in 1977-78. Their nickname comes from stags found in nearby Sherwood Forest, and a stag head features on the club's crest.
15. Who was the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers when they won three English top flight titles in the 1950s?

Answer: Stan Cullis

In 1948, he took over the managerial reigns at Molineux, and oversaw the club's "golden era". The league title was won in 1954, 1958 and 1959, with two F.A. Cups being annexed in 1949 and 1960.
