Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. England played in the first ever international football match, which was against Scotland on 30th November 1872. In which city did this historic match take place?

Answer: Glasgow, Scotland

The match took place at the home of the West Of Scotland Cricket Ground in Glasgow, Scotland. It finished 0-0.
2. Who were the first international team that England played from outside of the home nations of Scotland, Wales and Ireland, on 6th June 1908?

Answer: Austria

In June 1908, England undertook a central European tour, facing Austria twice in Vienna, winning 6-1 and 11-1. They also played Hungary in Budapest, winning 7-0, then Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) in Prague, coming out 4-0 winners.
3. England had been playing Scotland at Wembley Stadium regularly since 1924. However, it wasn't until 1951 that another international team came to Wembley to play England. Who was it?

Answer: Argentina

Wales didn't play at Wembley until 1952, Germany not until 1954 and France had to wait until 1957. England had played against international teams in London before, but all matches except those against Scotland took place in club stadiums such as White Hart Lane and Highbury.
4. Who were the first team other than Scotland to beat England at Wembley Stadium?

Answer: Hungary

Hungary beat England 6-3 on 25th November 1953 then won the return fixture in Hungary 7-1. These results were a shock to an English team that couldn't cope with their modern tactics.
5. Walter Winterbottom was England's first ever full-time manager, appointed in 1946. How long did he hold the post for?

Answer: 16 years

He held the post from 1946 until 1962, managing England through four successive World Cups. He was succeeded by Alf Ramsey.
6. England won the FIFA World Cup on home soil in 1966, beating Germany 4-2 aet in the final. Geoff Hurst famously scored a hat-trick, but who scored England's other goal in that match?

Answer: Martin Peters

The most controversial of the goals was England's third, scored by Geoff Hurst in the first half of extra time. The ball hit the cross bar, bounced down on (or maybe over) the line, then back out. Whether the entire ball actually crossed the line or not has been hotly debated ever since.
7. England won the FIFA World Cup on home soil in 1966, but failed to retain their title in the 1970 World Cup, which was won by a brilliant Brazil team. Which stage did England reach?

Answer: Quarter-final

The 1970 World Cup, held in Mexico, is often said to be the greatest tournament ever. Brazil, the eventual winners, were arguably the greatest team of all time. They played England, the reigning world champions, in a match in the group stage, most famous for a brilliant save by Gordon Banks (Brazil won 1-0). England progressed out of the group stage then faced Germany in a quarter-final, losing 3-2 in extra time.
8. England first qualified for the World Cup in 1950. There were twelve more World Cup tournaments in the twentieth century (1954 to 1998). In how many of those did England fail to qualify?

Answer: 3

England failed to qualify for consecutive tournaments in 1974 and 1978, then later for USA 1994.
9. England hosted the 1996 European Championships. Who was their manager during the tournament?

Answer: Terry Venables

Germany, the eventual winners, knocked England out on penalties at the semi-final stage. Earlier in the competition, England had beaten Spain in one of their very rare penalty shoot-out victories.
10. Which 18-year-old scored a brilliant individual goal for England against Argentina, at the 1998 World Cup in France?

Answer: Michael Owen

This was in the quarter-final stage of the competition. The final score was 2-2 with Argentina winning on penalties. Alan Shearer scored England's other goal in the game - from a penalty won by Michael Owen.
