Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rotherham United were formed in 1925 by the merger of which two clubs?

Answer: Rotherham County & Rotherham Town

Rotherham County were formed in 1877 under their original name of Thornhill United, and joined the Football League in 1919. Rotherham Town were formed in 1899, and joined the Midland League shortly afterwards. The two clubs merged to form Rotherham United in 1925 and took County's place in the Football League.
2. What was the name of the stadium which was home to Rotherham United from 1925 until 2008?

Answer: Millmoor

Millmoor was previously used by Rotherham County, one of the clubs who merged to form Rotherham United. The record attendance there was 25,170 for a local derby against Sheffield United in December 1952. Millmoor was probably one of the least picturesque football grounds in England, being almost completely surrounded by scrapyards! The stadium's name also led to "The Millers" being adopted as the club's nickname.
3. What have been Rotherham United's first-choice shirt colours since 1930?

Answer: Red & White

Rotherham United wore amber and black shirts for the first five years of their existence, 1925-1930, before permanently adopting red and white as the club colours. Shirt designs vary from season to season, but Rotherham's are usually red with a white trim, or red with white sleeves (similar to those of Arsenal FC). Shorts colours are invariably white.
4. In May 1947, Rotherham United set a new club record for their biggest win when they thrashed which club 8-0?

Answer: Oldham Athletic

In 1946-47, in what was the first season of league football after World War Two, Rotherham finished in second place in Division Three (North), behind Doncaster Rovers. On 26th May 1947, they played Oldham Athletic at home and won 8-0. Wally Ardron, who scored 38 league goals that season, grabbed a hat-trick in this match.
5. In season 1954-55, Rotherham United came very close to winning promotion to Division One, the top tier of English football. They thrashed Liverpool 6-1 in their final game to move into second place (only two teams were promoted at this time), but unfortunately they missed out, when which club won their final match two days later to pip them on goal average?

Answer: Birmingham City

Birmingham City, Luton Town and Rotherham United all finished the 1954-55 Division Two campaign on 54 points, so the two promotion places were decided on goal average. Birmingham and Luton both finished ahead of Rotherham by this criteria.
6. Which player set a new record for the most number of league appearances for Rotherham United between 1946 and 1962?

Answer: Danny Williams

Danny Williams signed for Rotherham United in 1943, and made his official debut in 1946 following the end of World War Two. A midfielder, he would make 621 appearances for the club in all competitions (461 in the league) before moving into the managerial seat in 1962.

He would later have a spell as manager of Swindon Town, leading them to 1-0 victory in the 1969 League Cup final vs. Arsenal FC.
7. In 1961, Rotherham United reached the final of the very first League Cup competition. Which team did they lose to, over two legs, in the final?

Answer: Aston Villa

In the 1960-61 League Cup, Rotherham United defeated Leicester City, Bristol Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth before eliminating Shrewsbury Town over two legs in the semi-final. The final against Aston Villa was held over to the beginning of the following season, and Rotherham put themselves in a great position by winning the first leg at home 2-0, Barry Webster and Alan Kirkman scoring their goals. Unfortunately for Rotherham, the second leg at Villa Park ended in a 0-3 defeat.
8. Which manager guided Rotherham United to successive promotions between 1999 and 2001?

Answer: Ronnie Moore

Ronnie Moore was a former player with Rotherham United (1980-1983), who had two stints as the club's manager. In the first, between 1997 and 2005, he saw them rise from the fourth tier to become an established second tier club. They were runners-up to Swansea City in the fourth tier in 1999-2000 and runners-up to Millwall in the third tier twelve months later. Moore left to take over at Oldham athletic, followed by a spell in charge at Tranmere Rovers, then returned to Rotherham in 2009, but was unable to repeat his previous success there and left in 2011.
9. Kari Arnason became Rotherham United's most-capped player by winning 36 caps for which country between 2012 and 2015?

Answer: Iceland

Kari Arnason was central defender who made 90 appearances for Iceland between 2005 and 2021. He joined Rotherham United from Aberdeen in 2012 and made 116 league appearances for them before leaving for Swedish club Malmo F.F. in 2015. He helped Rotherham to back-to-back promotions between 2012 and 2014.
10. What is the name of the new stadium that Rotherham United moved into in 2012?

Answer: New York Stadium

Rotherham United were forced to leave their long-time home of Millmoor in 2008 after a dispute with their landlord. They spent the next four years exiled at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, before returning to the town in 2012. The club opened the New York Stadium with a friendly against neighbours Barnsley in July 2012, with Burton Albion being their first league visitors three weeks later.

The stadium name comes from the area of the town where it was built.
