Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1926 and 1928 World Series, the great Babe Ruth hit three home runs in one game in both series. Who was the next player to hit three home runs in one World Series game?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Throughout even 100 seasons of Major League Baseball, Ruth and Jackson were the only two to hit three in one game. Ruth's first time was in 1926 against the Cardinals in game four, but St. Louis still won the series four games to three. It was game four again in the 1928 series, and the Yankees swept the Cardinals, 4-0. Lou Gehrig also hit two home runs in game three of that series. Jackson hit five overall in the 1977 series with the Yankees, and three in game six, with a four games to two crown over the Dodgers.
2. World Series action brings on some intense play. Who was the first manager in history that was ejected twice in World Series action?

Answer: Bobby Cox

Cox joined a few others who had been ejected, when his dismissal was given in 1992 against the Blue Jays. Still with the Braves, he was ejected again in the 1996 World Series against the Yankees. Bobby set a record in 2009 by being the first manager in history to be ejected 150 times from the game.
3. Which pitcher in the 1970s set a World Series record when he dished up his ninth World Series career home run?

Answer: Catfish Hunter

The others had not started their Major League careers yet. In over 15 seasons, Hunter began his career with the Athletics, and ended it in the pinstripes of the Yankees. He gave up three to the Dodgers in the 1977 series also. In his final World Series in 1978, the Yankee gave up his last two home runs to the Dodgers. Hunter went to six World Series in the 1970s.
4. The first Major League World Series was in 1903. How many World Series were played in a best-of-nine game format?

Answer: 4

The first World Series in 1903 saw Boston defeat Pittsburgh five games to three. After many seasons of best-of-seven formats after that, the leagues went back to the nine-game schedule in 1919, which was the infamous Black Sox Scandal, then 1920 and 1921, the latter being the first World Series for the Yankees.
5. When the World Series comes around, it is time to show your best stuff. However, which pitcher while pitching in only three games in one series in 1910, set a record by walking 14 batters?

Answer: Jack Coombs

The others weren't born yet. For the Philadelphia Athletics in 1910, Coombs threw three complete games against the Chicago Cubs. Although walking a record 14 batters, he still struck out 27. He took three of the Athletics' four wins in the four games to one defeat of the Cubs.
6. Although in multiple World Series, which pitcher set a record by winning seven consecutive games that he started?

Answer: Bob Gibson

Of the others, only Vance was a pitcher. Gibson was a 17-season St. Louis Cardinal. After losing one game in the 1964 series against the Yankees, he then won his next two. Bob went 3-0 in the 1967 series against the Red Sox, then won two more against the Tigers in 1968, before finally losing game seven. He was 7-2 in World Series play, taking the 1964 and 1967 crowns.
7. Which of the following retired with a career record of hitting over 25 extra bases in World Series action?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

While Yankee Yogi Berra set a record for appearing in 14 World Series, fellow Yankee Mantle appeared in 12. Mickey hit six doubles, two triples, and a record 18 home runs for a total of 26. This all occurred between 1951 and 1964. Jackson appeared in five World Series, and had 18 extra base hits including 10 home runs.

Other than Mantle and Jackson, the other two listed never went to a World Series game.
8. Who was the first Major League Baseball umpire to officiate in more than 10 World Series?

Answer: Bill Klem

Klem appeared in an amazing 18 World Series between 1908 and 1940. Bill holds one of those records unlikely to ever be duplicated. He was a 1953 Hall of Fame inductee.
9. The Chicago Cubs were the first team in history to be swept twice in World Series play. Who was the next team to lose two World Series, four games to none?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Cubs lost the 1932 and 1938 series four games to none both times against the Yankees. Although the Yankees lost the 1922 series 4-0-1 to the Giants, that was not a sweep, but they were still swept in the 1963 series by the Dodgers, and then the 1976 series by the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati.

The Cardinals were swept in the 1928 World Series against the Yankees, then four games to none against the Red Sox in 2004. The Cubs, Yankees, and the Athletics were the only teams in the century to be swept twice in World Series play.

The Dodgers were swept only once in 1966 by the Orioles.
10. A walk-off World Series winning hit is one in the last game of the series that wins the entire series for your team. Which of the following never had a World Series walk-off hit?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Martin's walk-off single came in game six of the 1953 series, which saw the Yankees put the Dodgers down four games to two. Mazeroski hit his walk-off home run against the Yankees in the 1960 World Series. Larkin of the Twins, singled in the bottom of the 10th inning in game seven in 1991, scoring Dan Gladden to defeat the Atlanta Braves. Jackson appeared in five World Series, hit a total of 10 home runs, but never had a walk-off hit.
