Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ...the assassinated Governor of Montana

Answer: John

Season 5/episode 1 opens with John Dutton, the owner of the Yellowstone, taking the oath of office, becoming the Governor of Montana. As governor, John is pretty egocentric, making decisions that are important to the continuation of his ranch, and rejecting those that try to promote tourism.

In doing so he is making some powerful enemies. His adopted son Jamie, now serving as Attorney General for Montana, also has ambition to become the governor; in addition, John's recall of Market Equities' building project leaves them wanting revenge. After Jamie says the wrong thing at the wrong time to his girlfriend, an undercover corporate raider for Market Equities, John's assassination is arranged and staged as a suicide (season 5/episode 9).

The story is told over season 5/episode 11, "Three Fifty-Three". Because the coroner has ruled John's death a suicide, it is up to his youngest son Kayce to uncover what really happened. As the story unfolds, Kayce is able to convince the coroner to rule John's death as suspicious, as there are marks on his body that point toward foul play.
2. ...your adopted brother's murderer

Answer: Beth

Beth, John's daughter, never hides her feelings toward Jamie, who is treated as a son and heir until his adoption into the Dutton family is brought to light in season 3/episode 10. When they were teenagers, Beth went to Jamie for help when she found that she was pregnant. He took her to a clinic where the clients had to agree to sterilization; Jamie signed the paperwork and never told Beth what he had done. After Beth finally realizes what he had done all those years ago, and thinks about the future of the ranch, Jamie's actions in the situation become an unbearable reminder to her.

Aside from that, Beth's hatred for Jamie grows even more after John's death, as she believes that he is responsible in some way - which he is. She promises her father at his funeral that she will take revenge. In "Life is a Promise", season 5/episode 14 she attacks Jamie in his home, and they have a physical altercation that results in his death and her hospitalization.
3. ...staying in Texas with your sweetheart

Answer: Jimmy

Jimmy's grandfather asks John Dutton to take ex-con, meth-cooking Jimmy into the fold and teach him how to be a man way back in season 1/episode 1. He is likeable and tries, but Jimmy's past is always there, holding him back; he has absolutely no cowboy skills. After Jimmy disobeys John twice, he is sent to Texas, with John telling him that it is an opportunity to learn on a different ranch - the 6666, or Four Sixes (season 4/episode 3).

Jimmy thrives in Texas away from his old mistakes and problems. He works his way from someone who had nothing but the shirt on his back and nowhere to live, and becomes a real cowboy. He's motivated to learn and even teaches himself how to rope cattle! He meets a new girl who falls in love with him and supports him. Jimmy would be a fool to want to return to Montana, and finally he is no fool! John clears all debts, and Jimmy is able to return to Texas (season 4/episode 10). He is last seen working at the Four Sixes ranch and helping Travis train horses.
4. ...dumping a body at the train station

Answer: Rip

Rip's job as ranch foreman on the Yellowstone is to do whatever is necessary to take care of the ranch; he is John Dutton's enforcer. That has meant that Rip, who is also married to Beth, disposes of the bodies of family enemies from time to time, which is done by taking them to the train station. The train station is a location in rural Wyoming in a county with no law enforcement and no people (season 1/episode 4).

In "Life Is a Promise" (season 5/episode 14), Rip rescues his wife, Beth, while she is in an intense fight with Jamie at his house, and allows her to kill him just as she has always vowed she would do. Jamie's body is wrapped in a rug and taken to the train station, and his car is parked in a faraway remote location and set on fire. When the police arrive at Jamie's residence, they find a badly beaten Beth; her story is that Jamie attacked her and then fled.
5. ...selling your family's ranch

Answer: Kayce

Kayce always said that his father's dream about running the ranch wasn't his own. After his return to Montana from his stint as a Navy Seal, Kayce stays purposefully away. Little by little, however, he and his dad are able to forgive old offenses, and they begin to form a working relationship. Kayce is still torn, however, between doing what is best for his family and what is best for the ranch, fully aware that his son Tate is the Yellowstone heir.

The truth is that John's business decisions over the years have left the Yellowstone in danger after his death. There is barely money to pay taxes and there is none to pay the hefty inheritance tax. After he solves the mystery of his father's announced suicide (season 5/episode 11), Kayce then finds a way to provide for his family (season 5/episode 13). He has the idea of selling the ranch for less than its value in order to circumvent the high inheritance tax, and in doing so, is able to keep the East Camp acreage for his family (season 5/episode 14).
6. ...mourning a loss and working with Travis at the Bosque Ranch

Answer: Teeter

Travis is a horse trainer who appears every now and then throughout the series. He is John and Rip's friend, and helps the family liquidate its livestock at the auction held at the end of the show (season 5/episode 13). Also a successful professional horse trainer, Travis owns a ranch called Bosque Ranch in Texas and has connections with the Four Sixes ranch.

One of the story lines at the end of the series is the resettling of the ranch hands, who suddenly find themselves in need of employment. Teeter has been a ranch hand for quite a while (season 3/episode 2). She is a hard worker and the other hands respect her, in spite of the fact that they can't always understand what she is saying. A native of Texas, her accent is often difficult to interpret. When she asks Travis for a job, he tells her she can have one as long as she learns to speak proper English.

Teeter is leaving Montana heartbroken as her love, Colby, has recently passed away. She seems to be looking forward to a new start.
7. ...becoming your girlfriend's roadie

Answer: Ryan

Ryan is one of the ranch hands at the Yellowstone. He absolutely loves being a cowboy and works as a Montana Livestock Agent when needed. In his opinion, there is no better life - at least until he meets Abby, a beautiful aspiring country singer (season 5/episode 1).

When the Yellowstone must move part of its herd to Texas, Ryan is proud to be chosen to go along. But what about his relationship with Abby? They are obviously in love, however, he doesn't even ask her opinion. He tells her he will be gone for about a year without even batting an eyelash, comparing the decision to the one she would make if invited to play at the Grand Ole Opry (season5/episode 7).

Now, with the Yellowstone and every piece of it being sold, and all the cowboys relocating to other ranches, Ryan decides that he made a mistake. Maybe being a cowboy isn't everything. Luckily, Abby is happy to take him back - maybe he will be on her road crew?!

Ryan's difficult decision is meant to show how the traditional cowboy life, which John Dutton fought so hard to preserve, is coming to an end. The sale of the main ranch and modern pressures like the need for development and payment of taxes are emphasized over and over as part of the cause that is changing the cowboy way of life.
8. ...brutally murdered by your adopted sister

Answer: Jamie

Jamie Dutton is the character on "Yellowstone" that people love to hate. He is an impressive lawyer, and can find a loophole in the law for anything and everything. A graduate of Harvard Law School, it seems that he should be set for life. Jamie feels, however, that John sent him to law school in order to use him, and really doesn't care about what he wants - which is a future in politics.

Jamie is also constantly at odds with his sister, Beth, who makes no secret of her hatred for him. He has always been raised in the family as one of the children, and didn't even know himself until he needed a copy of his birth certificate. Once he discovers that he was adopted and finds out who he really is, Jamie just falls apart.

As he unknowingly enters into a relationship with an employee (Sarah) of Market Equities, he begins to divulge information about his personal thoughts and life - mostly his hatred for his sister and father. At one time he asks Sarah if she knows any groups who could handle a situation for him. She twists this question into the approval she seeks for setting up the hit on John.

So Jamie does have a part in John's murder. Beth kills him with a knife through the heart, his body is taken to the train station, and his car set on fire. Jamie becomes a missing person.
9. ...killed by a rogue horse

Answer: Colby

Colby is one of the Yellowstone's most devoted ranch hands. Throughout the series he typically acts as a peacemaker among those in the bunkhouse; he is someone that everybody respects and likes - especially Teeter. Finally, when Teeter is chosen to travel to Texas with part of the Yellowstone herd and Colby is left behind, he admits that he loves her.

That is probably why Colby's death is so shocking in season 5/episode 12. He dies while trying to help one of the less experienced hands who is being threatened by a dangerous horse; Colby bravely steps in saves his life, but at a great cost. It has been said that Cody's death is meant to show the danger and uncertainty faced by cowboys in their work every day. Sadly, as the others are going through Colby's things, it is apparent that all he ever wanted to do was to be a cowboy.
10. ...the caretaker of a ranch the size of Rhode Island

Answer: Chief Rainwater

Chief Rainwater, the leader of the Broken Rock Reservation, has always wanted the Yellowstone, and has often spoke about how the Dutton ancestors took it from the Native Americans. When Kayce approaches him about a potential sale, he is happy to comply with certain conditions.

The agreement is that the ranch can never be developed or sold, and that Kayce is allowed to keep the East Camp as his family's home. In return Rainwater is allowed to buy approximately 900,000 acres for $1.25 an acre, the price that supposedly the first Duttons paid back in the late 1800s. The price is so small in comparison to the value that neither the sales tax or inheritance tax will hurt anyone in the end. The Yellowstone is to be preserved as an environmental area for generations to come.
