Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jess watches a video taken over twenty years ago in which her mom talks about Mesoamerican treasure. What indigenous person does Manuela Valenzuela call a hero and protector of the treasure?

Answer: Malinche

In the video Manuela Valenzuela is speaking to a panel of experts about lost Mesoamerican treasure. She tells the panel that rather than being a traitor as she is commonly depicted, Malinche was a hero and double agent who was working for the Aztecs while she was an interpreter for the Spanish under Cortez. Referred to as 'La Malinche', she was a woman of Nahua descent who helped spy and smuggle treasure away from the Spanish. The panel dismisses her theories and they tell her there is no lost treasure and they reiterate their thoughts that Malinche was a traitor.

Later in the video, Jess sees her father dancing with her mother and she is filled with both happiness and sadness as it was the first time she had seen a video with her father in it.
2. What is the name of the group of women who helped create and protect the three boxes of clues that lead to the Mesoamerican treasure?

Answer: Daughters of the Plumed Serpent

The Daughters of the Plumed Serpent are a group of Mesoamerican women that helped protect treasure from their ethnic groups from being taken by the Spanish army led by Cortez. The group created three artifacts, one each for the Inca, Aztec and Maya, that contained clues to where the Mesoamerican treasure is located.
3. Jess and her friends figure out that the 'Sun King' clue is a reference to Elvis. What city do they travel to search for a clue at the spacious mansion where Elvis used to live?

Answer: Memphis, Tennessee

Liam figures out that the clue referencing a 'Sun King' is likely Elvis rather than King Louis XIV of France who was nicknamed Sun King. Elvis's record label was Sun Records and he was commonly referred to as the King. Elvis used to live in a home in Memphis, TN known as Graceland. Jess and her friends travel to Graceland to search for clues that may be located there.
4. In the episode it is mentioned that Jess Valenzuela was the first DACA valedictorian. What prompted Jess to go to college close to home rather than a more prestigious school?

Answer: Her mother was dying.

Jess Valenzuela came to the United States from Mexico when she was very young and her residency status is undocumented. However, she is a member of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) which allows her to stay in the United States and obtain employment authorization. Jess decided to stay home for college because her mother was dying.

In the first episode it is mentioned that it was the one year anniversary of the day that Jess's mother died. Interestingly, Jess did not know that her mother was actively involved in researching lost treasure until after she was dead.
5. What does Oren release in Graceland prompting the mansion's security to put out a call to their exterminator contractors?

Answer: Moths

Oren releases several moths at a time when the glass protecting one of Elvis's jackets was removed. So as to not damage the jacket, Jess and her friends made sure to pick moths that do not eat clothes for Oren to release. After the exterminators are called, two of Jess's friends pose as the exterminators in the hopes of getting access to a secret room at Graceland.
6. Although he doesn't see the code, Ethan tells Jess that it is an eight digit number to gain access to a secret room. Jess guesses the correct code as 03251957 which is what important date in Elvis's life?

Answer: The date he purchased Graceland.

To gain access to the secret room at Graceland, Jess communicated with her team so they could research certain dates in Elvis's life. They initially try the date he married Priscilla and think it may be the date Lisa Marie was born but Jess correctly guesses that it was the date that Elvis purchased Graceland, March 25, 1957 (03251957 on a keypad).

Graceland is a mansion on a 13.8 acre estate and Elvis purchased it for $102,500 in 1957. In 2006 Graceland was declared a National Historic Landmark.
7. Meaning 'dove' in Spanish, what is the name of the record of Elvis that Jess plays and records in the secret room at Graceland in the hope that it has a clue to the whereabouts of the Mesoamerican treasure?

Answer: La Paloma

Posing as an exterminator, Ethan is the first one to see the secret room at Graceland after he is escorted down there by the mansion's head of security. While down there he notices a guitar with a dove on it as well as a framed gold record of "La Paloma". Later, Jess gets down to the secret room and plays the "La Paloma" record and records its encoded message.

"La Paloma" was originally written by the composer Sebastián Iradier in the 1860s. Elvis recorded an English version of the song titled "No More (La Paloma)" for the 1961 film "Blue Hawaii".
8. Billie and her team explore a cave at Iztaccihuatl, Mexico. How does her accomplice, Nate, get separated and possibly die?

Answer: He falls down a hole.

The antiquities mercenary Billie is tracking down clues to the Mesoamerican treasure just as Jess and her friends are. Billie is aided by Nate and Kacey and together they enter a cave at Iztaccihuatl, Mexico that had indigenous markings. Billie realizes that the cave is a trap but by that time Nate has fallen down a hole and they can't see or hear him. Kacey and Billie presume that Nate is dead and they flee the cave.
9. Also called shorthand, what does Jess research on YouTube to try and help her decode the message from the Elvis record she had recorded?

Answer: Stenography

When Jess plays the gold record "La Paloma" in the secret room at Graceland she records it on her phone. The recording is indecipherable so she looks up stenography or shorthand on YouTube to see if maybe that will help her decipher the recording. Unfortunately the message encoded by Elvis is still not able to be decoded after she researches stenography.
10. Who uses his/her music software to decode the message that Elvis had left on a gold record in a secret room at Graceland?

Answer: Liam

Liam is a musician that sings and plays guitar. After Jess is unable to decode the Elvis recording via stenography, Liam asks her if he can run it through some of his music software. He tells her that the recording sounds as if it is backwards so he reverses it and then they are able to notate the coded words.
