Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Captain Ross' profession?

Answer: Airline pilot

The year is 1981. A cab pulls up to a trash-lined street in New York City as a group of airline workers arrive at their hotel for the night. After a nightcap, Captain Ross heads upstairs to find one of his stewardesses, Tawny, heading out for ice. Both of them are married, and while the pilot chooses not to give in to the invitation, Tawny persists.

Captain Ross heads to his room and removes his wedding ring before opening his luggage. Inside is his leather outfit. He heads out to a warehouse, a popular cruising spot on the water's edge, and heads into the dark building for the evening.

The police arrive at the riverside the next morning to find that Captain Ross' body has been found by a local man fishing in the Hudson with his son. The body, presumably dead before it hit the river, appears to be missing its head.

The head is found later on by a city worker who, clearing out a blocked sewer drain, comes across it as the source of the blockage. In the autopsy room, a mortician finds a coloured handkerchief stuffed down its mouth.
2. Dr. Wells has been taking samples from which of these on Fire Island?

Answer: Deer

Dr. Wells looks at samples in her lab to find that the mutations on the slides she created from Fire Island appear to be multiplying quickly. It's a dangerous thing, she says, since people seem to be contracting the virus she's found leading to seizures, skin infections, and liver failure. At the level of mutation she's seeing, there could be an epidemic in months. She heads back to Fire Island with the intent to speak to the mayor and the chief of police.

Returning to Fire Island she explains that she's been taking samples from deer on Fire Island for more than a year, since the first suspicious death of local wildlife. Lately there have been more dead than usual. It's highly communicable, and the solution is to kill all the deer to avoid its spread to humans.
3. Gino works for 'The Downtown Native', a newspaper with which target audience?

Answer: Gay men

At the offices of 'The Downtown Native', Gino Barelli receives a formal complaint from local lesbians, angry with him for not providing coverage for their issues. As a gay man promoting a queer newspaper, however, he asserts that he's more focused on problems plaguing gay men, most important of which, lately, is the string murders targeting homosexuals in New York.

Gino returns to his apartment to find that his boyfriend, Detective Patrick Read, has already made dinner. The two quickly talk about the most recent murder and while Gino wants to publish something in the paper, Read tells him he can't; no one's supposed to know. The disagreement leads to a full-blown argument and Gino, frustrated that they can't make a difference with Read tiptoeing around and remaining in the closet, suggests their relationship is a sham. Gino leaves instead of sitting for dinner.
4. Adam's roommate, Sully, is attacked by a man in what New York City location?

Answer: Central Park

Roommates Adam and Sully argue in their living room. Adam, getting over a tough break-up, lays on the couch for his sixth day in a row while Sully, needing to get out to sell drugs, urges him to come out and get fresh air. He concedes and the two head out to what turns out to be a cruising spot in Central Park, much to Adam's confusion. While Sully heads off with a guy, he tells Adam to hang around and have fun.

Adam sits alone by the tunnel where Sully splits off from him as the other men in the area depart, but Sully doesn't return. He shouts for his friend, but he doesn't come back. Instead, he's found by a man in leather bondage gear and a mask who approaches him with a whip in-hand.

Sully eventually hears Adam's yells for help and rushes through the woods to return to him, but he gets lost in the darkness on the way. The man with the whip finds him instead. Adam arrives where he hears Sully's screams, but doesn't find him there.
5. At the Neptune Baths, Adam meets who of these people who, to his surprise, wants to help?

Answer: Gino

Adam ends up giving what description he can at the police station and Detective Read takes the information down, attempting to pry what he can from the witness' memory. Though Read gets the description clearly, his interrogation about the supposed perpetrator's stature and outfit leads Adam to believe nothing will be done about Sully's disappearance. Read tries to placate Adam's worries and gives over his card; if Sully doesn't return to his apartment by Thursday they can fill out a complete missing persons report. When Adam leaves, Read explains to his chief that he'd like to pursue the lead. He's told it's not necessary.

In the evening, Adam heads to the Neptune Baths Health Club for a drink and finds a photo on the wall behind the bar depicting the man he believes he saw in the park. The bartender doesn't know who's in the photo, but the man who took it was Theo Graves. Theo happens to be in one of the baths behind him, but he heads upstairs with another man before Adam can take him aside.

Adam returns to the bar to close his tab and gets stopped by Gino, who happens to be there enjoying a drink as well. Gino gives over his number, letting him know that he'll be happy to help get to the bottom of things.
6. Adam's grandmother, he claims, was which of the following?

Answer: Psychic

Adam heads through the city the day after his visit to the Neptune Baths and takes the back entrance to Theo Graves' studio, arriving to find a brightly-lit warehouse and gallery space. Theo's secretary sends him in mid-photo shoot and Adam introduces himself, explaining that he's there to speak about some of his photographs.

When Theo finishes, he wastes no time in relinquishing what he can, explaining that his grandmother was psychic and called a witch when she lived in Haiti; she could see things no one else could see. He likes to think that the powers were passed on to him. His goal, through photography, is to expose the perverted in what everyone else finds is beautiful.

Theo tells Adam to pose against the wall. Adam can ask him questions, but he'll need to pose-- shirt off-- while he takes photos.
7. Theo informs Adam that the man in the leather mask was known in his circle by what name?

Answer: Big Daddy

Adam and Theo take turns asking questions. When Adam reveals that Sully is missing, Theo's not too concerned-- missing can be boring. He wants to know about the man in the leather mask, but Theo claims he hasn't been seen around in years. People referred to him as 'Big Daddy'. As their impromptu photo shoot comes to an end, Adam leaves his number and asks Theo to call him if Big Daddy reappears.

As Adam departs, Theo's manager, Sam, comes into the gallery and complains that he's not taking enough photos that he can reasonably sell. Theo worries, however, that something dark is coming to New York City, and if he lets the darkness creep in too much, it'll swallow him up. Sam says he sounds like his grandmother. In the meantime, Sam's setting him up with a new series of photos he'll love shooting.
8. Detective Read's ex-wife, Barbara, has a new job at which store?

Answer: Bloomingdale's

Read offers an olive branch to Gino before the latter goes out for the evening, smoking from the pipe before explaining that he tried to speak to the chief about going forward with the case. He was shot down, however. If the NYPD caught wind of anything, he'd be a dead man. Read does want to ask questions though, and he starts with asking about the meaning of a blue handkerchief. When he gets the info he's looking for, he asks Gino if he knows the Brownstone Bar, but he does remind that he's not supposed to be actively looking into the case. Any active reporters, however, could reasonably snoop if they wanted to. Read just tells his boyfriend to be safe.

Later that evening, Read heads to a coffee shop to meet with his ex-wife, Barbara. He hands over the paperwork and lets her know that the lawyers will indicate where she needs to sign. Either way, he'll ensure she's looked after. She's not altogether worried as she already got a new job at Bloomingdale's. She does regret that she never knew his secrets, she says, and only wishes he'd told her the truth.
9. Gino investigates the Brownstone Bar and speaks to Henry Grant. When Gino leaves, what happens?

Answer: He finds he's been drugged

Gino heads to the Brownstone Bar to snoop into the lead and when he arrives he finds Henry Grant, a regular there, seated for a drink and asks him a few questions. Gino leads with the fact that he's there to investigate the serial killer pursuing New York City's gay men, but Henry doesn't completely believe his readers will change their attitudes and fear the danger. There is a nearby place, however, where there is a great deal of the darkness he speaks of, and there is a man who shows up there, late, and seems to bring about an odd air. He only seems to go for the guys at the bar who drink mai tais, and when he leaves with them, those men are never seen again.

As Gino departs from the Brownstone, he passes by Sam, discussing the upcoming shoot with an interviewed subject. He warns that there will be a good payment, but he'll need a high pain threshold.

At his apartment, Read opens a case hidden on the top shelf of a closet, removing a compartment to look through his bandanas.

Gino starts to walk home but quickly feels the effects of the drugs in his drink. A man grabs him and tells him things will be alright before placing him in the passenger seat of his waiting car.
10. Theo asks Sam if he remembers the model from the photo that Adam inquired about. Sam claims which of the following?

Answer: The man is dead

Sam's prospective photoshoot subject, Freddy, heads to Theo's gallery late one evening, following an address on a napkin, and arrives at the back stairwell to find Big Daddy standing at the threshold. He's let inside when he reveals that Sam invited him. The shoot goes smoothly until Sam forces Freddy into more perverse actions, much to Theo's disappointment behind the camera.

After Freddy leaves, Theo asks Sam if he's seen Big Daddy around (if he remembers him at all), and Sam says he thinks he's dead.

At the Neptune Baths that night, Adam meets with Theo over a drink and finds out the news of Big Daddy's passing, though this poses more questions. As Theo hooks up with one of the bar's other patrons and Adam stays back to think about the circumstances, Freddy follows a man into one of the steam rooms in the back. When he turns around, Big Daddy appears behind him.

On Fire Island, Dr. Wells watches as the deputies of the local police shoot and kill a herd of deer. It's alright, she says, because it's necessary.
