Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Darklurker encountered?

Answer: Dark Chasm of the Abyss

Once the player has lit all three subareas entwining the Dark Chasm of the Abyss, they must choose one of the three subareas, and simply go through it again. When they've lit all three areas and go through one of them again, instead of be teleported back to the start, they will find themselves inside Darklurker's boss room.
2. What is Darklurker's biggest weakness?

Answer: Lightning

At 15%, Lightning is more useful in this fight than it may statistically seem. Darklurker does move around a lot, but it does not move very quickly. As such, Miracle builds packing Lightning Spear can get as far from Darklurker as possible, make it have to chase the player or shoot back, and just pelt Darklurker from a relatively safe positioning.

While any spell can be used to "camp" Darklurker, Miracles have the edge to its weakness to Lightning.
3. Darklurker's biggest resistance is Dark. How could we possibly have deduced that? How high is Darklurker's resistance to Dark?

Answer: 70%

At 70%, Darklurker is the boss with the single highest Dark resistance in the entire game, and it's actually not terribly close either as second place goes to Elana the Squalid Queen, with a 51% Dark resistance.

Hexes in this game are incredibly powerful, to the point where a Hex-only playthrough isn't even viewed as a challenge run like a Sorcery-only, Miracle-only or Pyromancy-only run might be. Yet, Hex-only is very much a challenge run specifically when fighting Darklurker due to its massive resistance to Dark.
4. The fight against Darklurker is relatively tame until it reaches about half its health. Then, things will start to get wild. What happens here?

Answer: Darklurker splits into two

Darklurker will cross its arms and emit a wide shockwave that will knock the player back if they're too close. In the process, a second, completely identical Darklurker appears. In essence, there are now two Darklurkers. The second, new one, acts the exact same as the first and behaves the exact same with the same moveset.

On one hand, the player now has another threat to worry about. There is a catch to this though; if both Darklurkers stand near one another and the player manages to simultaneously hit them both, they will both take damage and their collective healthbar takes damage twice, essentially doubling the player's damage output. Clever players will usually come to this fight with numerous methods of dealing AoE damage to exploit this.
5. Darklurker is a completely optional boss whose existence is tied to a covenant. Through what covenant can the player access this boss fight?

Answer: Pilgrims of the Dark

The Pilgrims of the Dark are a PvP-based covenant. This one is definitely less-so than other PvP oriented covenants like the Dragon Remnants, as it is possible, likely even, to max the covenant out without engaging in any PvP. By lighting all three Chasm of the Abyss areas, the player will make it to, but not finish, the max rank under this covenant. It should be pretty clear how this covenant is maxed, then: by defeating Darklurker.

Amidst the journey, the player is vulnerable to being invaded by an Abyssal Spirit, which is just another player entering the Chasm of the Abyss and choosing to invade once there. There is one unique aspect to invasions in this context: invaders are allowed to heal, when they normally are not outside of the Chasm of the Abyss. This makes the fight between invader and host completely even, whereas the host has a massive advantage otherwise.
6. Amusingly, the player can almost completely disarm Darklurker's threat for thirty seconds if they bring a very specific spell. Which spell will rob Darklurker of most of its capabilities?

Answer: Profound Still

When cast, Profound Still prevents any enemy units from casting any spells for thirty seconds. Almost the entirety of Darklurker's arsenal consists of spells. When Profound Still is active, all Darklurker will be able to do is swing its Dark Sword against the player, and split itself in two to commence second phase.

It will actually try to cast spells against the player anyway, as if unaware of Profound Still, so this can help greatly to reduce the threat of this boss.
7. Unsurprisingly, Darklurker almost exclusively deals Dark damage. As such, which Greatshield can be used to harmlessly block hits from Dark damage?

Answer: Rebel's Greatshield

The Rebel's Greatshield with a Dark Infusion has 100% absorption against Dark, meaning the player will be totally unharmed if using it to block most of Darklurker's attacks. The shortcoming for this shield has always been its poor Physical absorption, but this is not a problem during this boss fight as Darklurker is incapable of dealing Physical damage, even with its Dark Sword attack.

The Transgressor Shield with a Dark Infusion can also achieve this, but slightly less reliably due to having much less Stability compared to the Rebel's Greatshield.
8. Devastatingly, the player can lose this boss in a heartbreaking, unique way. Which of the following is true?

Answer: Darklurker can briefly attack after death

After Darklurker hits zero health, the half that the player attacked will roll over and die. However, as Darklurker would have split into two, if the player did not land the finishing blow on the other, it will normally fade away approximately five seconds after the 'finishing blow' is dealt. However, it can very possibly kill the player during this time. If it does, the player will not be credited with the win against Darklurker and will need to start all over again, despite having literally reduced the boss' HP to zero.

This is actually not the only boss this can happen in. When fighting Elana the Squalid Queen, if the player lands the finishing blow on Elana, she will be in a dying animation. However, if she has summoned help, the help can kill the player while Elana herself is dying, to present the same devastating loss on them that can be suffered against Darklurker.

If the timing is done "perfectly", the player can actually receive a reward in souls for having slain the boss, while the boss remains alive. Unfortunately, this method cannot be used to unfairly obtain Boss Souls over and over again, only the souls dropped.
9. Even obscure, nameless bosses have some kind of deeper, intricate lore to them. How many items, NPCs, or anything in this game gives some clarity as to who or what Darklurker is?

Answer: Zero

There is not a single tidbit of lore or anything to shed any sort light (no pun intended) on who or what Darklurker is. This is the only boss for which that is the case. In fact, this is the only character in this entire game who has absolutely zero impact or identifying features in the game's lore.

As far as the game is concerned, Darklurker is just some angelic thing with wings who comes out of nowhere within the Chasm of the Abyss, and decides to fight the player for some reason.
10. On defeating Darklurker, it drops the Darklurker Soul to the player. This Soul infamously grants access to one of the most hated spells in this entire game, Lifedrain Patch. Lifedrain Patch causes rage inducing moments almost whenever it is used. What is true about this Hex?

Answer: It is the only means in which players can friendly fire

Lifedrain Patch can be used to hurt and even kill allied players. There is no way apart from casting this spell that a player can kill their allies. As such, one much maligned, annoyingly popular thing to do for people who have nothing going on in their lives, is that they will drop their summon signs posing as "help" for other players. When summoned, their goal is surprise their hosts by killing them with Lifedrain Patch say, while the host is fighting the boss, a group of enemies, etc. It is griefing your own host while they are powerless to do anything about it, and cannot actually stop you from trying once you've arrived in their world.

In terms of actual, intended practical value, this spell is pretty mediocre. It has low range, deals middling damage, and actually costs three thousand souls to use. Its lack of use for doing anything other than trolling the unfortunate is what makes the existence of this spell a true blemish on the Hex catalogue.
