Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Fume Knight directly encountered?

Answer: Brume Tower

At the very bottom of the Foyer found inside the giant tower is where Fume Knight is found. The player is extremely heavily advised to make certain to have four Smelter Wedges to hand before coming to this fight. Otherwise, unless they are simply legendary at this game, they will be trying and failing to beat Fume Knight for a long time.
2. Right before "Bloodborne" released, From Software publicly released statistical information on bosses in this game. In it, it was revealed that Fume Knight had, by very, very, veeeerrrrryyyy far, killed more players than any other boss in the entire game. Approximately how many boss-related deaths was Fume Knight responsible for, when stats were released in 2015?

Answer: 93% of them

As a matter of fact, Fume Knight all by himself managed to kill more players than every single other boss in the entire game, combined. As such, it's pretty easy to use statistics to largely conclude that Fume Knight is the hardest boss in this entire game.

...having said that, this has also placed a bullseye on his back for prospective challenge runners. Yours truly included. Personally, I have managed one no-hit run against this boss, and plenty of others have too.

Ultimately, the release of "Elden Ring" in 2022 massively tarnished and rendered the challenge of this boss dated. Many, many bosses who are faster and about as powerful as Fume Knight exist in "Elden Ring", so if you played that game first, you may end up even having an easy time with Fume Knight.

Before "Elden Ring" came out however, Fume Knight was a force to be reckoned with. And of course, if you never played that game before fighting Fume Knight, you have the honor of experiencing this fight with all the glory and difficulty that it once boasted, authentically.
3. What is Fume Knight's weakness?

Answer: Nothing

Fume Knight has a 37% resistance or higher to any and all forms of damage, and he is immune to both Bleed and Poison. As such, there simply isn't anything in this game which functions as an easy win button. No matter what build or weapons the player comes into this fight with, they'll have to "git gud" in order to prevail.
4. What is Fume Knight's largest resistance?

Answer: Fire

With a staggering 79% resistance to Fire, Pyromancy builds absolutely need some means of non-Fire offense for this one. Because of the stats needed to become an effective Pyromancer, they can wield Dark weapons instead, such as the Scythe of Want or Crypt Blacksword.

While Fume Knight still resists Dark, it isn't as much of a resistance (37%) as his Fire resistance, so this would go a long way.
5. Before even entering Fume Knight's boss room, the player should take major notice of the four Ashen Idols surrounding his boss room. What should the player do with these Ashen Idols, if looking to fight Fume Knight optimally?

Answer: Destroy them

Ashen Idols emit a pulse which heals and buffs anything which is considered an enemy to the player, which includes Fume Knight. If Fume Knight steps near an Ashen Idol, which is a virtual certainty to happen if the player doesn't deal with them first, he will be significantly healed and gain a temporary damage output and defense buff.

Unless looking to seriously challenge themselves, the player absolutely needs to destroy these Ashen Idols. This can be done with a Smelter Wedge. The player will need four Smelter Wedges, but they thankfully start the area with six, so this isn't too demanding an ask.
6. As it turns out, Fume Knight has a name. What is his name?

Answer: Raime

When defeating Fume Knight, the player can buy his set, and it will be labeled "Raime's Helm", "Raime's Armor" and so on, so forth. As well, Fume Knight's name can be found on the item descriptions of the Rebel's Greatshield and the Baneful Bird Eye ring, which are two pieces of equipment originally tied to Fume Knight in lore.
7. First phase against Fume Knight is a relatively simple one on one duel, but he makes sure to add some intrigue to the fight in his second phase. What two elements does Fume Knight add to his ultra greatsword during second phase?

Answer: Dark and Fire

When reaching roughly 60% of his health, Fume Knight will put his short sword away, hoist his UGS with both hands, then take one hand and lift the sword up high. When holding it high, a series of energy surrounds the UGS and gives it a Dark and Fire buff. This buff lasts the entire fight and, when applied, Fume Knight's damage output stretches into the stratosphere. Even tanky builds with a lot of health will be killed by him in two or three swings, and his aggressiveness will make it difficult to heal off any blows he does dish out to the player.

Second phase, without a doubt, is what gets players killed in this fight. It sets a tempo not found in another fight in this game.
8. The player can change Fume Knight's behavior significantly, prompting him to immediately begin his notoriously difficult second phase right as the fight starts. To do it, they need to wear a very specific helmet into his boss room. What helm is it?

Answer: Helm of Velstadt

Fume Knight in the lore has a long, drawn out history against Velstadt. In lore, the two dueled when Fume Knight wanted to have Nashandra removed from Drangleic in distrusting her. Velstadt defeated Fume Knight, and he was then banished from Drangleic, deemed a traitor by Vendrick.

As such, Fume Knight reacting violently and aggressively at seeing the helm of his old friend turned foe makes lore sense. Worth noting, the player only needs the Helm of Velstadt, they do not need the entire Velstadt set. As well, only the helm triggers immediate second phase, so the rest of the set is useless at achieving this.
9. Two NPC summons are available for this fight. One of them is Steelhearted Ellie. The other one is a truly bizarre option, contextually speaking. Who is the second option for help?

Answer: Carhillion of the Fold

Carhillion's presence here is simply nonsensical and without any clarity offered from the lore. He is the merchant who sells sorceries to the player back at Majula, and is never seen directly fighting anyone unless the player fights him, or summons him for help with Fume Knight.

Carhillion never in any dialogue even implies that he has some interest in venturing all the way into and to the bottom of Brume Tower. As well, there is nothing here that would seem to connect to Carhillion in particular. Prompting the question, why exactly is he here?

In any event, he is sadly a poor choice for a summon, just like Steelhearted Ellie. He does poor damage, he's a caster so he isn't going to be aggroing or distracting Fume Knight too well, and since he's a caster and Fume Knight can hit extremely hard, he isn't going to survive very long either.
10. Fume Knight is considered the 'champion' of Nadalia. Who or what exactly is Nadalia?

Answer: Fragment of Manus

Nadalia is a Fragment of Manus, an evil resurrection of the twisted Father of the Abyss himself. It is through her power that Fume Knight can buff his sword come second phase to be as terrifying as he is. As well, when destroying the Ashen Idols outside his boss room, they each drop fragments of Nadalia's soul, suggesting she had a hand in powering them up too.

Interestingly, Nadalia is the only Fragment of Manus who never actually directly appears in the game.
11. On defeat, Fume Knight's armor set appears in a merchant's wares. Who sells his set?

Answer: Magerold of Lanafir

Unlike the Dragonrider's set, this set thankfully does not require going all the way to New Game Plus 3 to acquire, and can be bought immediately after defeating Fume Knight for the very first time. The set is, however, quite expensive, so the player should come with a lot of souls if they want the whole thing.

Unfortunately, despite Fume Knight himself having excellent defensive stats, his armor set scaled down to the player offers merely average protection in all facets. The set is not particularly heavy, though, so it at least doesn't impose on the player much.
12. Potentially, the player could earn their final required Soul of Nadalia fragment in order to finish the entire Soul of Nadalia, by beating Fume Knight. One reward gained from the Soul of Nadalia is a Pyromancy. Which Pyromancy is it?

Answer: Outcry

If we view the Fire Storm/Chaos Storm tree as if it was an evolutionary tree, then Outcry would be the final evolved form. Like Fire Storm and Chaos Storm, the player spends a moment channeling a cast, then plunges their fist into the ground to cause a series of flaming pillars to erupt from the ground around them.

Where Outcry differentiates is that these pillars are now Dark and Fire, emulating the buff Fume Knight is able to apply to his sword. The pillars hit much, much harder than those under Chaos Storm, in exchange for making Outcry cost an extra spell slot to wield.
13. One potential reward from the Soul of Nadalia is the Chime of Screams. This chime is horrific. Which of the following is true about it?

Answer: It has the slow casting speed in the entire game

The Chime of Screams is disappointingly by far and away the worst chime in the entire game. It has a casting speed of 25. To reference just how bad this is, the Cleric's Sacred Chime is the chime Miracle builds begin the whole entire game with, and it has a cast speed of 140. 25 looks really bad now, doesn't it?

To go with startlingly terrible cast speed, the Chime of Screams offers slightly above average Dark scaling with below average Lightning scaling. In terms of raw stats, this is a chime dealing average damage, with literally less than 1/5th the cast speed of the starter chime.

To add insult to injury, this chime's niche, the unique gimmick, is that it gives the player a boost to their Faith to equip it. Yet, its poor Lightning scaling makes it a bad choice for a Faith build, as it is literally completely outclassed in every way by just the starting chime, let alone later game alternatives!

Simply put, the Chime of Screams' best use is as a badge of honor. It's something you can hold up and say "this is proof that I underwent the annoying process of finishing the Soul of Nadalia." And if that isn't good enough for you, then don't use the Chime of Screams for anything at all, as it is plainly and simply terrible.
14. When defeated, Fume Knight will reliably drop the Soul of the Fume Knight. One of the rewards from this is the Fume Sword, which is the shortsword used by Fume Knight himself during his first phase, that he puts away during second. Interestingly, in the hands of the player, this sword gains a type of elemental damage. What element is it?

Answer: Dark

This is very interesting, as quite often, the player finds that the usable version of a boss' weapon is typically watered down somehow compared to the version the boss gets to use. Yet, Fume Knight's shortsword only deals Physical damage, then in the hands of the player, it deals split Physical/Dark damage.

This is simply an amazing weapon for Hex builds, and deceptively so at that. It has very modest stat requirements, it gives amazing scaling in Dexterity and Dark, and it is a very light weapon, good for casters who cannot handle heavy gear.
15. The Fume Ultra Greatsword is the second option from Soul of the Fume Knight. Unsurprisingly, this is a player appropriate version of the massive melee weapon Fume Knight himself uses. It may just seems like a powerful UGS, and if that's all it was, it'd still be great. But it is capable of offering more. Which of the following can this weapon do?

Answer: Act as a shield

Uniquely, any time the player goes to swing this weapon, they will very briefly gain blocking frames before performing the intended attack. This may not seem like much at first glance, but it effectively makes the player immune to taking counter damage, which is an unbelievable benefit to get from a melee weapon.

As well, the player can just straight up use this weapon to block hits, too. It has comparable blocking stats to the Twindragon Wooden Greatshield, so it's a very capable shield in and of itself.

On top of all of this, the Fume Ultra Greatsword offers the highest base damage of any UGS, and its scalings are just off the charts for this weapon class. It has amazing Strength scaling and not too shabby Dexterity scaling as well.

As such, while it is debatable as this game has many great UGSes, calling the Fume Ultra Greatsword the best of the best would be a pretty fair claim to make.
