Question 17 of 20
17. If his signature weapon isn't to the player's liking, Velstadt's boss soul can also be used to receive the miracle Sacred Oath. Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before even being able to light the first bonfire and set up shop, the player will be ambushed - in a non hostile albeit very abrupt way - by an NPC who questions the player's motives for their entire journey. Which NPC consistently refers to the player as a "young Hollow"?

Answer: Aldia

When lighting the bonfire, instead of it simply being lit as per usual, the bonfire will explode and Aldia will emerge. If this is your first playthrough, there is a one hundred percent chance you will be thoroughly jump scared by this. After Aldia has finished interacting with the player and leaves, the bonfire can be used as it normally would be.
2. In the early going of the map, the player gets the opportunity to summon a powerful NPC last seen at the Earthen Peak. Who can help the player for the Undead Crypt in this way?

Answer: Devotee Scarlett

Scarlett is back, and ready to carry the player once again. Just like in Earthen Peak, if her AI allowed it, she could unquestionably lay waste to everything in the Undead Crypt, apart from the boss this time, with no input from the player needed. Given that this is a late game area and can be quite brutal for newcomers, it is highly recommended to summon Scarlett for newcomers, or even just in general if you simply want a helpful hand.
3. After making it through a few waves of enemies, the player can go down a short hallway, emerge into a large room and hear a random voice in the distance tell them "Human, do not produce _____. _____ and all those who bear it, are unwelcome in this place." This voice belongs to Grave Warden Agadayne. What is he telling the player not to 'produce'?

Answer: Light

If the player enters the area with a lit torch, Agadayne will instead instruct them to put it out rather than simply telling them not to produce light. Irritatingly enough, there is a hollow wielding a torch in the room just before this one, and if that hollow escapes and enter this room, Agadayne will become upset with the player over it and will attack the player. If neither the player or this hollow carry a torch as Agadayne demands, he will become a merchant for them.
4. Shortly after meeting Grave Wraden Agadayne is a room with three unlit sconces. The developers themselves have actually left a message next to one of these sconces simply reading "don't you dare!" What will happen if the player lights these sconces?

Answer: Many enemies will spawn

A total of eleven Insolent Knights will spawn all across the area. They do have drop rates for some very useful items, Twinkling Titanite, Petrified Dragon Bone, Spices, Bonfire Ascetics and their own armor and weapons. They are difficult assailants however, so the player should take extreme caution before lighting these sconces, as they cannot be un-lit.
5. There are many small statues positioned around the Undead Crypt with bells attached to them. What happens if the player rings these bells?

Answer: Enemies spawn

Ringing these bells will cause a Darkwraith to spawn. These are very nasty enemies which do a lot of damage. The main challenge is to maneuver through the Undead Crypt, slaying enemies while being very careful not to accidentally strike these bells with a weapon, or to allow enemies to do the same.
6. A watchful eye may discover an illusory wall not too long after the second bonfire. Behind it lies a really fun, classic, fan favorite crossbow, returning over from "Dark Souls 1". What crossbow is this?

Answer: Avelynn

The Avelynn is unique for firing three bolts at a time. It deals by far the highest DPS in its class, though it is also a bit more cumbersome due to its slightly lengthier reload speed. It requires a 25 in Strength and 15 Dexterity to wield.
7. Imperious Knights are huge, strong and have a lot of HP. They pop up a few times in the Undead Crypt, the most notable being down the hallway from the illusory wall, where their massive frames deny the ability to run past them. What is their weapon of choice?

Answer: Greatshield

One half of the shield goes in one hand, the other half for the other. Contending with these knights can be challenging, as they can simultaneously attack and defend themselves. The player will need to get their hits in during the time the knight is raising its shield to slam it down, as this is the only point where the shield isn't protecting them somehow. Spellcasters have an upper hand, as they can safely shoot the knights during these vulnerable moments, but melee characters may have a tough time. Thankfully, the Avelynn found just down the hall from this encounter could work perfectly for this if the player has ammunition for it on hand.
8. When reading the item description in the Imperious Knights' weapons, we can see that they came to the Undead Crypt for a very different reason than anything else. They also stay here for a very different reason as well. Why did Imperious Knights come to the Undead Crypt?

Answer: To conquer it

The Imperious Knights had a master whose name is not revealed. That master believed the Undead Crypt harbored evil entities that threatened the integrity of Drangleic, and hired these knights to go conquer it. The knights failed in their mission, but because Agadayne knew they were doing the right thing in their own minds and weren't simply trying to oppress and destroy for no reason, he opted to let the knights live under the condition that they'd enter temporary servitude to the crypt itself.
9. There is a key item in the depths of the crypt called the Crushed Eye Orb. This item's sole function is to allow the player to invade an otherwise friendly NPC. Who does the Crushed Eye Orb target?

Answer: Licia of Linheldt

As it happens, Licia is a con artist disguised as a friendly, god fearing cleric. As the player invades her, she will curse them out but then express joy that she can now kill the player "guilt free".
10. Down the incredibly long hallway leading to the boss door is a mini boss who will prevent the player from accessing the actual boss until defeated. Who is this?

Answer: Dragonrider

This Dragonrider stands next to two Syan Knights and an Aldia Warlock, though these enemies can be fought separately from one another if the player takes care to shoot them from a distance and fight them away from the group. The Dragonrider will not respawn, and drops Twinkling Titanite on defeat.
11. Right in front of the boss door lies an NPC summon sign. Who offers to help the player here?

Answer: Grave Warden Agadayne

Unfortunately, Agadayne is actually a terrible choice for a summon. The simple reason for this is that the boss has a massive resistance to Dark, and this is the only element apart from Physical that Agadayne brings. He does very little damage, and isn't particularly tanky. Devotee Scarlett would be a way, way better choice for players needing a hand.
12. The boss of the Undead Crypt is a very important name in Velstadt, the Royal Aegis. The reason he's important isn't tied to anything gameplay related, but rather lore. Which of the following is true about Velstadt?

Answer: He is the king's right-hand man

Right beyond Velstadt's boss room is a small room where the king himself mindlessly meanders, having long gone hollow. Velstadt swore an oath to defend the king eternally, and with the king's mind having been lost to hollowing, Velstadt appears to be on his way to a similar fate, as he predominantly wields Dark magic and his body moderately emanates with darkness.
13. As the player walks past Velstadt's boss room, they'll hear an extremely loud sound coming off of a small pile of clothes in the next room over. Upon interacting with it, the player will receive an extremely important item. What item is it?

Answer: King's Ring

The King's Ring is one of the most important items in the game period, as the player will need it in order to progress beyond this point, as well as to simply finish the game.
14. As it happens, there is a second, 100% optional boss fight to be found in the Undead Crypt. Who is this boss?

Answer: King Vendrick

Vendrick is initially found as a mindless hollow, simply bumbling about his boss room without a care in the world. He will not be hostile towards the player immediately, and won't become hostile until the player depletes 5% of his maximum health. If the player does this but is then defeated by Vendrick or leaves the boss room in any way, he will now immediately be hostile upon the player returning.
15. Before tackling the optional boss, it is extremely heavily recommended to the point of being practically mandatory that the player bring in at least three, but ideally five, of this one item. What item is this?

Answer: Soul of a Giant

With zero Souls of a Giant, Vendrick will receive a whopping 32x boost to his defenses, making him impossible to meaningfully damage even with the mightiest of weapons or spells. This defense boost is halved for each Soul of a Giant in the player's inventory, and is negated entirely if they acquire five. Vendrick has the second highest healthpool out of the entire game, so adding defense, and in this extreme of a measure, on top of that makes trying to tackle him without at least a few Souls of a Giant impractical.

While possible, it would take less time to go out and get these items than it would to simply go to his boss room and defeat him without them.
16. The boss soul dropped by Velstadt the Royal Aegis can be used to obtain one of two things, one being his signature bell weapon, the Sacred Chime Hammer. Uniquely, this weapon demands stat prerequisites in four different categories: Strength, Dexterity and what?

Answer: Intelligence and Faith

This weapon deals split Dark damage, and Dark scales off of Intelligence and Faith. With a 40 in Strength to go with 17s in Dexterity, Faith and Intelligence needed, this weapon requires the player to specifically build their character for it. However, the trade off is worth it, as this weapon delivers extremely hard hits and has solid durability to boot. Surprisingly, it can even be buffed by consumables or spells, giving it truly destructive potential.
17. If his signature weapon isn't to the player's liking, Velstadt's boss soul can also be used to receive the miracle Sacred Oath. The spell looks like a no brainer for aspiring clerics to equip, but they'll need a particularly high Attunement stat as Sacred Oath has one major issue- spell slots. How many spell slots does this spell take up?

Answer: Three

Three spell slots is just ridiculous and makes it difficult to justify using this spell. It's effects sure are powerful, as it provides a nice boost to physical damage output and defense for 45 seconds when cast. However, for as strong as this is, it's not worth three whole spell slots, especially since the spell itself can only be cast three times.

It's only worth it for Faith builds that are not using Miracles to any serious extent.
18. The optional boss soul can be turned in to Weaponsmith Ornifex for one of three different rewards. The first potential reward is the King's Shield. The King's Shield is a medium shield with 100% physical absorption. What is its secondary/special effect?

Answer: Nothing

This is quite literally just a basic medium shield, only it has a Drangleic logo on it which is how someone would actually be able to tell it has something to do with Vendrick at all. It's a very odd, boring choice for such a hard to obtain soul that can uniquely only be acquired once per playthrough. To be fair, for a medium shield, it's absorptions are actually fantastic, being on par with the Defender Shield.
19. One thing the optional boss soul can be used to acquire is the King's Ultra Greatsword. Contrary to the name, this is not actually a true blade at all, but rather a giant statue for the player to wield. Not just any statue, but a statue of an NPC the player has met. What NPC is this?

Answer: Nashandra

As Nashandra is Vendrick's wife, the connection is quite clear. If you've ever wanted to smite your foes so bad that you wanted to beat their faces in with a statue of someone, you've come to the right place. Even funnier when used to actually kill Nashandra herself.
20. By far the quirkiest of three items the optional boss soul can be used on, the Ruler's Sword bizarrely mainly scales off of one thing, and it's not any stat. What does this weapon scale off of primarily?

Answer: The player's Souls

The Ruler's Sword experiences a steep penalty in damage output if the player has less than 300,000 souls on their person. Once this is reached, the sword starts to gain a lot of power up until it reaches its cap at one million. It is the only weapon in franchise history to work like this.
