Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Ruin Sentinels have a formal boss encounter. Where does this take place?

Answer: Lost Bastille

While the Ruin Sentinels can be fought basically whenever the player wants when they gain access to Lost Bastille, for the average playthrough, this is typically a "welcome to Souls" experience as the Ruin Sentinels tend to be the first truly challenging boss of the average playthrough. Three of them will fight the player during this encounter.
2. Unlike later versions, the boss Ruin Sentinels actually have names. Alessia and Ricce are two of the names. What is the name of the last Ruin Sentinel?

Answer: Yahim

These names are not of particular importance. The reason these Sentinels all have names is likely just so the player can keep track of which Ruin Sentinel they're doing damage to.
3. All Ruin Sentinels are nimble, agile opponents, but they have one huge, crippling weakness. What is the Ruin Sentinels' biggest weakness?

Answer: Strike

Strike weapons, such as clubs or greathammers, will make very short work of the Ruin Sentinels. They have a pretty huge 35% weakness to Strike, which is among the top 10 biggest weaknesses in this game.

In Lost Bastille, the Craftsman's Hammer can be found. This weapon has fairly modest stat prerequisites and is fairly strong even un-upgraded, making it a fantastic option for needy players.
4. Two NPCs are consistently available as summons for the Ruin Sentinels boss fight. Who is one of them?

Answer: Pilgrim Belclaire

Belclaire sadly does very poor damage and is fragile, so if the Ruin Sentinels focus on her for just a few moments, she can easily get killed. As such, she is not a very strong choice as a summon.

Unfortunately, the other option for a summon in Felicia the Brave is not much better. She is at least far tankier than Belclaire, and wields a Tower Shield. Yet, she does not get anywhere near as much value from this shield as she should and, like Belclaire, is almost certain to get herself killed before terribly long.

Combined with the fact that summoning either NPC will give the Ruin Sentinels added defense and reduce the souls earned when killing them, and the player is typically better off flying solo for this fight.
5. Uniquely, when defeating the Ruin Sentinels, the player should explore their very boss room for some hidden loot! Stashed away behind illusionary walls that are now accessible upon the Sentinels' defeat, what is one piece of loot the player can find in the Ruin Sentinels' boss room?

Answer: The Hush sorcery

Hush, when cast, makes the user completely silent. This is niche, but has occasional application in letting the user slowly sneak up on an enemy to get the jump on them. Funnily enough, the player could earn a second copy of Hush by making progress in the Way of Blue covenant.
6. The Ruin Sentinel Soul, acquired on defeating the Ruin Sentinels boss, can be traded to Straid of Olaphis. Oddly, Straid will convert this Boss Soul into a sorcery. What sorcery?

Answer: Heavy Homing Soul Arrow

Heavy Homing Soul Arrow is an odd reward for this boss, given that the Ruin Sentinels are knights who only fight with melee weapons.

What's even odder is the existence of this very spell. Homing Heavy Soul Arrow is just weird in this game. It deals less damage than Heavy Soul Arrow and Great Heavy Soul Arrow. Yet, Heavy Homing Soul Arrow requires 35 Intelligence to cast, juxtaposed to the 14 and 16 required of HSA and GHSA, respectively. That would seem to suggest this spell's homing properties give it tremendous value. Yet, the so-called "homing" on this spell is barely noticeable, calling into question why it even exists if it's only going to have higher prerequisites for far less value than other, easier acquired alternatives.
7. The Ruin Sentinels show up later as a respawnable mini boss, five of them to be exact. Where does this take place?

Answer: Drangleic Castle

Each Sentinel is locked away by a door players must sacrifice an enemy to in order to unlock. The player can easily just ignore and skip over them if they'd like. But, they do guard one treasure chest each in their secluded rooms, and they drop plenty of Souls on defeat, making them often worth engaging with.
8. Beating up to five Ruin Sentinels at once could get to be pretty difficult, so the player actually has access to a Shade NPC they can summon. Who can be summoned to help the player here?

Answer: Bashful Ray

Ray's weaponry is powerstanced Claws and the Chaos Storm pyromancy, so he doesn't necessarily do the most damage to the Ruin Sentinels. However, he does wear the Simpleton's Ring which enhances his dodge roll, and because he attacks quickly and aggressively with his Claws, he will often aggro at least one if not multiple Ruin Sentinels at a time. With his enhanced dodge and decent tankiness, he can usually hold their attention for very, very long periods of time.
9. Players may actually eagerly fight the mini-boss Ruin Sentinels, as this particular appearance allows the Ruin Sentinels to potentially, on defeat, drop a piece of their armor. Players can, in time, form the entire Ruin Set on themselves. That said, this is an arduous process requiring some patience. By default, what is the chance a Ruin Sentinel will drop a piece of their armor on defeat?

Answer: 2%

At a 2% drop rate for an enemy who can take a few moments to slay, farming the Ruin Set can definitely be a time consuming process.

Personally, I find the Ruin Set to simply look arguably the coolest out of any cosmetic set in this game. The gold sheen worn by the Sentinels simply looks amazing on the player.

That said, the armor set does not have particularly stand out stats, and it leaves the player woefully weak to the same Strike damage that the Ruin Sentinels struggle with. As such, if looking for armor with high quality stats, this may not be worth it for the player.
10. Interestingly, the Ruin Sentinels' shield is inaccessible to the player, but a scaled down version of their weapon is. What weapon do the Ruin Sentinels wield, that the player can eventually get their hands on?

Answer: Lucerne

The Lucerne is a polearm dealing slash damage that can also deal thrusting damage if used behind a shield. It is classified as a Halberd and has the same sweet and sour spot mechanics that Halberds harbor.

The weapon is nothing fantastic, but it is definitely usable. It is sold by Chancellor Wellager at infinite quantity.
