Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Smelter Demon ultimately has two formal boss encounters. Where does the first take place?

Answer: Iron Keep

This is a simple one-on-one fight in a rather small boss room. It is found just before Ironhearth Hall, and the boss room is closely guarded by a litany of Alonne Knights and an Alonne Captain.
2. The infamous "Blue" Smelter Demon is the second boss encounter. Where does this take place?

Answer: Iron Passage

One of the harder areas in the game to trek through, "Blue" Smelter Demon is thankfully at the end of a very linear area, with the boss room guarded by a Smelter Warrior, two cleric NPCs and a Possessed Armor.

Interestingly, though the community almost entirely refers to it as 'Blue' Smelter Demon due to its differing appearance, both bosses are simply known in-game as just Smelter Demon without the differing color identity.
3. Right ahead of the first boss encounter with Smelter Demon, the player has at least one NPC summon they can use for help. Who is this?

Answer: Lucatiel of Mirrah

Lucatiel's questline can be advanced through this boss fight. However, this is almost definitely the hardest boss to actually try and advance her questline in. In order to make progress in Lucatiel's questline, she must survive this fight, which can be quite challenging.

Technically, though almost no players would actually go to the effort of setting this up, it is possible to summon Manhunter O'Harrah for this fight as well. To do this, the player must straight up skip Smelter Demon, advance to basically the end of Iron Keep and summon O'Harrah. Then, they'd need to backtrack all the way back to Smelter Demon's boss room. They would need to keep the Old Iron King boss alive, as that is the boss O'Harrah is intended to be summoned for. If they kill Old Iron King, O'Harrah's summon sign will vanish.

Fortunately, O'Harrah would actually be pretty useful for this fight, so players struggling with Smelter Demon may wish to get her services. In a nutshell, she is much likelier to survive than Lucatiel is and deals quite a bit more damage, though she's much less effective at agroing the Smelter Demon than Lucatiel is.
4. As for the "Blue" Smelter Demon, there are two NPCs summonable for help with this fight. Who is one of them?

Answer: Drifter Swordsman Aidel

Neither Aidel nor the other summonable option, Steel-Willed Lorrie, are strong choices for help this go around. Both do very poor damage. Worse yet, unless the player is exclusively using ranged attacks, the player will find these two NPCs to actually be a detriment. Both are strictly melee oriented, and Lorrie in particular uses fist weapons, so they both need to get close to Blue Smelter Demon, thus making it difficult for the player to find room to do the same.

A typical strategy I would recommend for the player in using these NPCs, is to use the NPCs to go through Iron Passage, then dismiss them right before the fight for a one-on-one with the Blue Smelter Demon. Another preferable alternative to using them during the boss fight, would be to not use them at all.
5. 'Regular' Smelter Demon massively resists Fire, while "Blue" Smelter Demon massively resists Magic. Both of these constructs, however, share the same weaknesses. What is the Smelter Demon's biggest elemental weakness?

Answer: Dark

The two Smelters do differentiate very slightly in just how weak they are to Dark, but it's a huge weakness either way. "Regular" Smelter Demon carries a huge 40% weakness to Dark, but the Blue version accentuates this up to a staggering 60% Dark weakness. The 60% enters it into a four way tie for largest elemental weakness for a boss in this game, tied with The Last Giant, Giant Lord and Mytha, the Baneful Queen.

Curiously, despite the fact that both of them are essentially large suits of armor, metallic armor at that, both carry fairly huge resistances to Lightning of 30% each.
6. Logically, the Smelter Demons are both immune to Bleed. After all, they're basically giant, animated suits of armor, so how could it be possible for them to bleed? Is it possible to then poison the Smelter Demons?

Answer: Yes

Hilariously, the Smelter Demons are actually both quite weak to Poison. I've finished probably hundreds of playthroughs of this game, know the lore like the back of my own hand, yet I simply cannot come up with an explanation for this. The Smelter Demons are, essentially, powerful souls fused into a giant suit of armor and made sentient.

It makes perfect sense that they cannot be inflicted with Bleed. But I simply can't explain why they're not just susceptible, but downright weak to Poison.
7. If the player thinks the Smelter Demon armor looks really cool, they may be delighted to find that a merchant can be found selling this armor set after defeating the first Smelter Demon. What merchant does this?

Answer: Maughlin the Armorer

It is to be noted that if the player has already killed Maughlin, his wares will not be updated and he will never sell the Smelter Demon Armor, even if he is resurrected at his tombstone later.

The Smelter Demon armor is a bit of a mixed bag, statistically. On one hand, it gives amazing Fire absorption, which is very relevant given that the player would be smack dab in the middle of the Iron Keep once it's available. On the other, this set is extremely inefficient at absorbing literally anything else, with very middling stats for a very heavy set of armor.

Ultimately, if the player wants to cosplay as the Smelter Demon, they should be encouraged to do so. If the player wants a set of armor to defend against anything that isn't Fire though, they can do much, much better.
8. Curiously, after slaying the first, "regular" Smelter Demon, the player can actually return to its boss room after resting at a bonfire for something extra. When returning to "regular" Smelter Demon's boss room, what will the player find?

Answer: The Pursuer

When re-entering Smelter Demon's boss room, the player will be attacked by The Pursuer. The Pursuer will, ironically, not give chase to the player if they then leave Smelter Demon's boss room, so this will be a one-on-one fight. When slain, The Pursuer drops the Ring of Blades +1, so melee players will absolutely want to do this fight.
9. Interestingly, both Smelter Demons share the same boss soundtrack with a boss encountered previously. What other boss has the same soundtrack?

Answer: Ruin Sentinels

The soundtrack is tense, fast and constantly rages on throughout fights against either Smelter Demon, or the Ruin Sentinels. In terms of the connection, the Ruin Sentinels and Smelter Demon also share in common that they're animated suits of armor with weapons, which were magically concocted by a king. They do not actually interact with each other in anyway, though.
10. When either Smelter Demon is slain, they'll drop the Smelter Demon Soul to the player. This can be used to unlock the Smelter Sword, or the Aged Smelter Sword. Both weapons have identical stats and stat prerequisites. What's the one difference between the two?

Answer: Elemental damage output

Both of these weapons are Ultra Greatswords, so they will both deal Standard melee damage. However, the Smelter Sword also deals part Fire, while the Aged Smelter Sword deals part Magic damage. Given that "regular" Smelter Demon deals Fire while "Blue" Smelter Demon deals Magic damage, this is a straightforward difference then between their weapons.
