Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these functions comes standard with Pokegear?

Answer: Phone

You'll receive Pokegear from the jump at the start of the game, acquiring the useful tool from your mother before leaving home (having just gotten it back from the repair shop). A helpful multi-tool, the Pokegear comes standard with a clock and a phone, but you can add functionality to it as you explore Johto.

The Map Card, for instance, is found as early as your first visit to Cherrygrove City; the Radio Card is collected from the radio tower in Goldenrod City. To get the latter, you need to get all five questions correct in the radio station's quiz.
2. Which of these Berries cures the Confusion status effect?

Answer: Bitter Berry

Introduced in Generation II, Berries can be found both in trees and held by Pokemon, and while they can be used as regular items at any given time, a Pokemon's ability to carry items into battle (a new capability) makes these small treats quite valuable, especially since a Pokemon can consume them on their own, without using up a turn. There are ten Berry types that you can find in your travels in Johto (and Kanto) and two of those can cure Confusion-- the Bitter Berry and the MiracleBerry, which cures all non-volatile status effects (and Confusion).

Numerous Berries are introduced in later Generations, many of which replace these initial ten in name and function.
3. Which of these will lead your Mystery Egg to hatch?

Answer: Walking

The game starts with a delivery you need to make to Mr. Pokemon, on behalf of Professor Elm, taking you up through Johto from New Bark Town to his house for the drop-off. What the package will end up being is a Mystery Egg, an item provided (as is told) from the Daycare Service south of Goldenrod City. You'll have no need to bring it back.

Instead, keeping it in your party and hitting a set amount of steps will cause it to hatch into Togepi.
4. Apricorns are used to craft which of these?

Answer: Pokeballs

Although most trees found throughout Johto and Kanto bear Berries, some instead carry Apricorns, small items that can be collected and brought to Kurt in Azalea Town to craft custom Pokeballs. There are seven Apricorn colours, and each one corresponds to a different specialized ball. The Black Apricorn, for example, will result in a Heavy Ball, which has a stronger chance of succeeding if the Pokemon it's used on weighs more.

It takes Kurt one day to craft a new Pokeball, and he'll only work on one at a time. In "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver", he'll craft multiple at a time.
5. There are three Fishing Rods you can collect, but how many are in Johto?

Answer: Two

Just as in "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow", you can collect an Old Rod, a Good Rod, and a Super Rod, all of which are capable of catching different types of Pokemon in still waters.

The Old Rod is just given over at the Pokecenter on Route 32, and while it won't net much more than Magikarp, it's a start. The Good Rod is given to you by a man in Olivine City, and it should be collectable before you set sail through the Whirl Islands. The last of these, the Super Rod, is found in the hands of the Silence Bridge Fishing Guru on Route 12, deep into Kanto.
6. You can receive a voucher to buy a Bicycle from someone in Mahogany Town.

Answer: False

In another shift away from the events of "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", getting a Bicycle in Johto is actually significantly easier than in Kanto. To get one, you just need to locate the bike shop in Goldenrod City (it's in the east end of the city) and speak to the proprietor. Eager to make sales, he'll simply hand over a Bicycle, allowing you to ride it for free in an attempt to use you as an active advertisement.

Generation III Bicycles will come in more than one form, so you'll have a choice when it comes to your ride.
7. You can only get the SquirtBottle after beating which gym leader?

Answer: Whitney

The loop around the southern stretch of Johto will be necessitated after you complete your first gym (Violet City's Falkner) since there will be a Pokemon blocking an intersection of paths on Route 36. The way through is in using a Squirt Bottle, spraying the tree-like Pokemon (Sudowoodo) there to aggravate it into attacking.

The catch is that the SquirtBottle, a Key Item, is in Goldenrod City's flower shop, and the proprietor will only be convinced that you should have it if you defeat Whitney, the city's normal-type gym leader.

It's a one-and-done item; you won't use it again after this encounter.
8. Where do you collect the Secret Potion?

Answer: Cianwood City

Your arrival in Olivine City will bring your quest for badges to a bit of a temporary halt as the gym leader there, Jasmine, will be out of office, so to speak, having headed to the nearby lighthouse to attend to the ill Ampharos at the top. If you visit her there, she'll request that you cross the sea via the nearby Routes (and Whirl Islands) to locate the pharmacy in Cianwood City. If you pick up the Secret Potion, bring it back to Olivine City, and hand it over to the Ampharos, Jasmine'll head back to her gym and fight with her steel-types for the Mineral Badge.
9. The Red Scale is dropped from which Pokemon?

Answer: Gyarados

You'll need to surf around in the Lake of Rage to get this Key Item, claiming it after a battle with the rare (and shiny) red Gyarados that makes its home there north of Mahogany Town. No matter whether you defeat or capture the Gyarados, the scale is dropped, and the only use for it is to hand off to Mr. Pokemon, way back on Route 30.

He'll trade it for the Exp. Share item, allowing you to pass experience to all Pokemon in your party, regardless of if they engage in battle or not.
10. The Rainbow Wing and the Silver Wing will always be found in one of two places depending on the game being played. Once will be given by the Director of the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City. Where will the other be?

Answer: Pewter City

These two items are needed to bring forth the Legendary Birds, Ho-Oh and Lugia, and the version of the game you're playing is what will determine which item is where. In any case, the first of the two (Rainbow Wing for "Gold", Silver Wing for "Silver") is a reward for saving the Director of the Goldenrod City Radio Tower.

The second will end up being found in Kanto; you can collect it from a man near the eastbound exit of Pewter City headed towards Mt. Moon. Without their respective wings, you won't find them at the top of the Tin Tower or in the Whirl Islands where they'll end up waiting.
